Year 6 Geography Snow Work
As part of your ISEB Geography Syllabus, you are required to know the names and locations of major
countries, capitals, mountain ranges and rivers in the UK, Europe and throughout the world. In
addition you will need to know the names and locations of National Parks in the UK. Learning more
about the names and locations of these features would be a valuable use of your time during this
snow break.
What you will need to undertake the tasks:
An Atlas or access to a web based Atlas (www.worldatlas.com , www.timesatlas.com ,
www.maps.google.com).
 Printouts of the maps in this document.
 Pen/pencil/colour pencils.
Task 1 – Major cities , rivers and mountain ranges in
the UK
Print out the map below and label with the features listed (indicate cites with a red dot, draw in
rivers using a blue pencil, draw the outline of mountain ranges with a normal pencil and then shade
in with a light brown pencil).
List the following features:Countries – England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Seas – English Channel, North Sea, Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
Cities – London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle upon Tyne,
Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin
Rivers – R Clyde, R Avon, R Severn, R Thames, R Trent, R Ouse, R Tyne, R Shannon (in the Republic of
Ireland), R Wye
Mountain Ranges – Grampians, Scottish Highlands, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, Cambrian
Mountains, Pennines, Peak District, South Downs, North York Moors, Lake District, Dartmoor,
Bodmin Moor.
National Parks (you can use a separate map of the UK) – Brecon Beacons, Broads, Cairngorms,
Dartmoor, Exmoor, Lake District, Loch Lomond, New Forest, Northumberland, North York Moors,
Peak District, Pembrokeshire Coast, Snowdonia, South Downs, Yorkshire Dales

Print out the map below and label with the features listed (indicate capital cites with a red

and capitals and lack of space to write these on the map, you will need to come up with a
suitable key - a number or letter system for capitals for instance.

Countries and capitals (capitals are in brackets)
France (Paris), Germany (Berlin), Greece (Athens), Italy (Rome), Poland (Warsaw), Spain
(Madrid), Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine. Also add Moscow (capital of Russia).
Ocean:Atlantic Ocean
River:The River Rhine.
Mountain Ranges:Alps, Pyrenees.
