about Children’s Hospital of Michigan children’s SUMMER 2009 Grant Helps Teens Access Mental Health Care Substance Abuse Symposium Creates Awareness Donor Appreciation Issue Jalin’s Field Trip Dear Friends, This issue is a tribute to you and the thousands of donors who have supported the Children’s Hospital of Michigan over the years. Since its inception more than 120 years ago, the physicians and staff at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan have stood by the children of our region and advocated for them. This could only have been possible because of the thoughtful contributions from donors like you. Your support is always appreciated and welcomed, but never has it been more important than it is right now. Our country is experiencing one of the most trying times in our history. Many in our community have had to make difficult decisions like putting food on the table for their family or paying their mortgage. However, children will continue to need medical care regardless of the economic conditions and they cannot wait for treatment. It is through the continued support of many friends like you that the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is able to fulfill its mission of taking care of the most vulnerable in our community. With your assistance, we are able to prevent, treat and work towards eliminating pediatric disease and injury. Author and poet Maya Angelou once said, “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” At the Children’s Hospital of Michigan heroes and she-roes exist everywhere you look, but the most important one is you. You, and the countless others who make up our compassionate donor family, allow us to deliver the very best health care to our young patients. This institution is proof positive of how we can make a difference in the community with your help. On behalf of the patients and families we serve, please accept my most sincere appreciation for your generosity. We are grateful for your kindness. Sincerely, Herman B. Grant helps Children’s Hospital make mental health care more convenient, accessible S ocial workers and doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic had no trouble spotting teenagers in need of mental health services. But they couldn’t deliver the care on site. Too often, that prevented young patients from receiving help until their problems ballooned into serious psychiatric issues. Now, a new partnership aims to break down the barriers to providing teens with mental health care. The Flinn Foundation recently awarded Children’s Hospital a three-year, $375,000 grant as part of its Integrated Care Initiative to expand mental health services in primary care settings throughout southeast Michigan. The Adolescent Clinic will use the grant to hire a full-time social worker and a full-time psychologist to provide enhanced screening, motivational interviewing and on-site mental health care for its patients. “We were very aware of the issues and problems the kids have,” said Mary Mueller, manager of social work. “But for a variety of reasons, it was very challenging to assist kids in getting the help they need.” Common hurdles included insurance and transportation issues as well as a social stigma attached to seeking mental health care, Mueller said. “It can get overwhelming for patients and their families and often they just give By Todd Schulz up,” she said. “We’re trying to make care as convenient and accessible as possible. When they’re in the clinic, they’ll be able to walk across the room and talk to a counselor.” Founded in 1976 by siblings Ethel and James Flinn, the Detroit-based Flinn Foundation is committed to improving the scope, quality and care of services for individuals with mental illness. Children’s Hospital was one of eight sites to win a grant from the Flinn Foundation’s Integrated Care Initiative, a $3.4-million effort to help identify and treat the symptoms of mental illness before they develop into disabling disorders. “The Adolescent Clinic was a perfect fit because it’s on the front lines,” said Andrea Cole, the foundation’s executive director and CEO. “People can receive the care they need in a setting where they are comfortable and that helps reduce the stigma.” Adolescent Medicine Clinic team Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 3 Children’s Tourette Syndrome team tackling brain’s biggest mysteries R esearchers at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan are using cutting-edge technology to unlock the mysteries of Tourette Syndrome. Led by Harry Chugani, M.D., the team has treated and studied roughly 100 children and adults to learn more about Tourette Syndrome. They hope their work helps improve treatments and eventually contributes to a cure for the disorder. “We’re trying to understand the basic underlying cause of Tourette Syndrome,” said Chugani, chief of pediatric neurology, director of the PET Center, and the Rosalie and Bruce Rosen Family Endowed Chair for Tourette Syndrome and Related Neurological Disorders Research. “We are using a multi-disciplinary approach to tackling the clinical as well as the research perspectives of the disease.” Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by multiple tics, which are abrupt, purposeless and involuntary vocal sounds or jerks. Tourette Syndrome is often accompanied by attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or both. Symptoms usually start between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. Children’s Hospital researchers are 4 About Children’s Summer 2009 By Todd Schulz contributing to the global effort to locate the gene or genes responsible for Tourette Syndrome, though an answer may still be years away. In addition to Chugani, the research team, which includes neuropsychologist Michael Behen, Ph.D., research coordinator Cathie Germain, and many medical students, is also using imaging technology such as PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans and advanced MRI exams, to study the function and structure of the brain. A.H.M. Huq, M.D., a neurogeneticist in the division of neurology at Children’s Hospital, collaborates in the genetics research. One key finding: patients with Tourette Syndrome seem to have an abnormal connection between two regions of the brain, the frontal cortex and the basal ganglia. “The tracks are not laid down the way they ought to be possibly because the genes responsible for that are mutated,” Chugani said. “As a result, we get the abnormal interactions and the tics.” Generously supported by Rosalie and Bruce Rosen, the research also includes a battery of neuropsychological tests to help predict the symptoms of Tourette Syndrome and determine the best treatment methods for various subtypes of the disorder, Behen said. Personal Giving Etkin family supports specialty clinic in memory of late father, husband T oby Etkin knows her late husband, Alex, would be proud of the recently opened Children’s Hospital of Michigan Alex J. Etkin Specialty Center in Southfield. But Etkin also guesses he’d be pleasantly perturbed about having the facility named in his honor. “Having his name on something was not the way Alex liked to go,” Toby Etkin said with a chuckle. “He would not be happy about that. He would have grumbled about it. But in this case, he would understand the value of having the name on the building and gone ahead with it because, hopefully, it will give other people ideas about doing the same thing. The idea is to inspire others to follow suit.” Alex Etkin certainly inspired his son, Doug, who spearheaded the project in memory of his father, who passed away in 2000. The specialty clinic was made possible by a significant naming gift from Toby Etkin, Doug Etkin and his wife, Judith. The 10,000-square-foot facility houses a range of outpatient pediatric specialties, including adolescent medicine, endocrinology, ENT/otolaryngology, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, speech By Todd Schulz pathology and audiology, and a diabetes clinic. Located at Franklin Road and Northwestern Highway, the facility replaces the hospital’s prior site in Southfield located on Lahser Road. The new facility, which opened in March, provides a greater convenience for patients in Southfield and surrounding cities in Oakland County. Nearly 146,000 outpatient visits occurred at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan last year. “We believe that every family should have convenient access to first-class pediatric specialty care and are appreciative of the Etkins’ support for this project,” says Alex J. Etkin Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman B. Gray, M.D. The goal of the clinic is simple: to make high-quality, specialized health-care more accessible for children and their families. “We’re bringing the facilities and care to them,” said Doug Etkin, 56, one of the principals of Etkin Equities, a commercial real estate firm. “It’s a convenience and familiarity issue. They’re getting care at a child-friendly medical building before they may have to go to the main hospital. We’re very pleased and proud to have our father’s Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 5 The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan Alex J. Etkin Specialty Center in Southfield. name attached to a facility that serves those purposes.” The mission and the location of the clinic offered the perfect opportunity to honor Alex, who was a highly successful building contractor in the metropolitan Detroit area for many years. “Alex had very strong feelings about what you should do in your community and personal life,” Toby Etkin said. “He felt that if you were fortunate enough to be able to give back a portion of what you’d gotten, you should do that. Not only money, but it was also important to give your time. We had the example set by him.” Doug Etkin has a personal connection to Children’s Hospital. On Thanksgiving Day 1982, he took his infant daughter, Stephanie, to the hospital because of breathing problems. Doctors diagnosed her with an immature reflux valve and successfully treated the problem. Today, Stephanie, 26, is healthy and recently completed her master’s degree at the University of Michigan. Though the health scare turned out to be relatively minor, it provided Doug Etkin with a glimpse of the challenges that patients at Children’s 6 About Children’s Summer 2009 Hospital face – and the top-notch care they receive. “Ultimately, my daughter’s condition was not a big deal,” he said. “But it created a connection about the importance of Children’s Hospital as it related to specialty care and the provision of services to children in the Detroit area.” The experience stuck with Doug Etkin for many years until he was offered a chance to become a board member at one of the Detroit Medical Center’s hospitals. “I said I was only interested in working with one institution – and that was Children’s,” said Doug Etkin, who has served as a Children’s Hospital board of trustees member for 17 years. “Children’s Hospital provides a degree of dedicated specialty care for children, and only children, on an intensive, skillful basis. If my child had a need for such care, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else in Michigan,” says Etkin. To learn more about how to support the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Alex J. Children’s Hospital is Jalin’s “field trip” By Marti Benedetti Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 7 Jalin and Tylin Jones (pictured on page 7). J alin Jones was a perfectly healthy 7-yearold just two years ago. He liked to draw and play with his little brother Tylin. But one day while he was sitting in his second grade classroom, his life took a dramatic turn. He suddenly became silent and still, staring straight ahead, seemingly in another world. Reacting quickly, school officials and his parents Pam and Marlin Jones got him to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where the medical staff determined he was having a complex partial seizure. The seizures recur and cause him to space out, sometimes for up to 10 minutes, says his mother Pam. Physicians at Children’s Hospital conduct ongoing neurological testing and are treating Jalin with medication. While his seizures occur less frequently, they continue to work with him to make seizures a thing of the past. Jalin’s physician Harry Chugani, M.D., chief of pediatric neurology, director of the PET Center, and the Rosalie and Bruce Rosen Family Endowed Chair for Tourette Syndrome and Related Neurological Disorders Research at Children’s Hospital, says one percent of the population has epilepsy. Of those, 70 percent are controlled with medication, leaving 30 percent not controlled. “Half of those people can be fixed with surgery,” he says. Surgery is considered if a patient tries three medications and is still not controlled. “We want our patients to be 100 percent controlled.” Chugani says if Jalin, who is 9, goes two years without a seizure, he, most likely, will be weaned off the medication. However, 8 About Children’s Summer 2009 By Marti Benedetti some patients will relapse when the medication is withdrawn and will need to go back on medication. “At present, Jalin’s seizures are controlled,” he says. “Therefore, we are not considering surgery. We will continue to work with him to make sure his seizures are controlled and to monitor potential side effects of the medications.” Jalin began taking Trileptal after his first seizure, and was symptom-free for a year and a half. In July 2008, he had another episode, which led physicians to give him a higher dose of the medication. Typically, the only warning Jalin gets before a seizure is a severe headache. Last October, he had yet another seizure. Doctors prescribed Keppra along with Trileptal. “I noticed over Christmas break that he would sleep a lot in the morning and he was often agitated, which is not his personality,” says Pam, a medical student coordinator at Sinai Grace Hospital’s Department of Medicine at the Detroit Medical Center. “I talked with his teacher who said he was very drowsy in class and sometimes stared blankly at her for short periods of time.” Jalin’s good grades fell, and he often seemed angry. So Chugani took him off Keppra and the fourth grader was soon back to being himself. Jalin has had MRIs and EEGs as well as a PET scan. Soon, he will undergo videoEEG monitoring for 23 hours to determine whether there is a focal point in the brain from where the seizures are arising. Seizures in children very often are caused by a malformation in the brain, Chugani says. Some types of seizures children outgrow, but others continue to plague them into adulthood, requiring them to stay on medication for life. Pam says that when Jalin has a seizure, he must be taken into Children’s Hospital for resuscitation and sometimes additional tests. But it doesn’t bother him. In fact, he relishes it. “Jalin and Tylin think of Children’s Hospital as a fun fair or a mall,” Pam says. “The boys’ response to a trip to the hospital is ‘yeah, we’re going to Children’s.’ They know their way around. They act like it is a field trip – a treat.” She knows their reaction to the hospital may sound a bit strange, but she says it is a reflection of the care and warmth the boys receive from the Children’s Hospital staff. Jalin, who loves to draw and write stories, is a fan of the Avengers and other super hero comic books, which the hospital’s gift shop carries. “There is nothing he likes better than going to the library and book stores,” Pam says. “When Jalin gets admitted, he plays with the games and toys at the hospital and goes to the gift shop. He gets his own menu and orders his favorite food. The people there are terrific,” she adds. Jalin is a big fan of superheroes. Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 9 Children’s Hospital first to use brain imaging, genetics research to treat OCD T he Children’s Hospital of Michigan is the first to use combined brain imaging and genetic studies in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and the result is a new treatment option for those with the difficult psychiatric illness. Findings from our study have suggested glutamate involvement in OCD,” says David Rosenberg, M.D., chief of child psychiatry and psychology and Miriam L. Hamburger Endowed Chair of Child Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and professor at Wayne State University. “This has led to testing of new medications for OCD such as the glutamate modulating agent Riluzole.” Glutamate is a neurotransmitter in the brain. A child or adolescent with OCD has obsessive thoughts that are unwanted and related to fears (such as a fear of touching dirty objects) and uses compulsive rituals 10 About Children’s Summer 2009 By Marti Benedetti to control the fears (such as excessive hand washing – sometimes more than 100 times a day). Rosenberg says the hospital is doing this research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of OCD patients. “We’ve not been able to say if a child would better respond to medicine or a type of therapy. The goal of the study is to detect specific chemical patterns before treatment that may predict who is more likely or less likely to respond to a particular treatment.” He adds that research is showing that chemical abnormalities in the brain may be reversible with the right medication and cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy focuses on helping the child or adolescent identify and understand their fears and learn new ways to resolve or reduce those fears more effectively. OCD in children and adults has been treated with medications such as Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox and Anafranil. The research was the first to identify that glutamate-related genes may be associated with OCD. “MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), genetics and basic neuroscience studies allow us to measure structure, chemistry and function in the brain and identify glutamate abnormalities,” Rosenberg says. This work may also have practical implications as glutamate-modulating agents are being used in treatment-resistant OCD. About a third of OCD patients do not respond to treatment; two thirds partially respond. In the past, the cause of OCD has not been known. Evidence suggests that people with OCD have a deficiency of a chemical in the brain called serotonin. Without enough serotonin, depression can develop. Glutamate turns serotonin on or off so children with OCD are being given Riluzole, a glutamate-modulating drug. The National Institute of Mental Health’s double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of Riluzole is underway in pediatric OCD patients. OCD tends to run in families, suggesting a strong genetic component. However, OCD may also develop without a family history of OCD. It is a debilitating neuropsychiatric condition affecting about 1 to 3 percent of the population and is known to have a median age of onset of 19 with 21 percent of the cases having onset by age 10. When OCD is present, obsessive thoughts cause distress and compulsive rituals can become so frequent or intense that they interfere with activities of daily living and normal developmental activities. Other OCD symptoms include repeated doubts (for example, whether or not the door is locked); obtrusive thoughts about violence, hurting, killing someone; spending long periods of time touching things, counting, thinking about numbers and sequences; preoccupation with order, symmetry or exactness; excessive attention to detail; and hoarding objects. In most cases, the activities involved with the disorder consume more than one hour each day and cause psychological distress and impaired mental functioning. “Two thirds of these patients will develop clinical depression. It takes over their whole life,” Rosenberg says. Further research at Children’s Hospital has started to explore brain imaging and genetics as they pertain to other psychiatric conditions in children such as depression and bi-polar disorder. “A fascinating finding in children with depression is if a child has a family history of depression (mother or father), their brain images look entirely different than those children with no family history,” Rosenberg says. “That tells us maybe treating all depression the same way is not good.” David Rosenberg, M.D. To learn more about how to support the psychology/psychiatry programs at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, please call (313) 745-5373 or visit www.childrensdmc.org. Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 11 Symposium creates greater awareness to help children of substance abusers J Herman B. Gray, M.D., M.B.A., Julie Fisher Cummings and David Rosenberg, M.D. 12 About Children’s Summer 2009 ulie Fisher Cummings has been concerned with the well-being of children for many years. She began her work with underserved children in southeast Michigan through the Lovelight Foundation, which Cummings co-founded with two other women. Next she became involved in the field of substance abuse and its impact on children. Knowing these children rarely get the help they need, Cummings is an advocate for the one in four children in the United States who live in a home where there is substance abuse. Cummings ultimately assumed the chairmanship of the board of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) in Rockville, Md. “I feel health care professionals should be better educated in this area since they are the ones on the front lines and they can have a positive and healing impact on the lives of so many children,” she says. Bringing this topic to the forefront of medical professionals’ minds was the reason the Peter D. and Julie Fisher Cummings Family Foundation funded the Fisher Cummings Substance Abuse Symposium May 1 at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. About 250 doctors, physician assistants, social workers and other professionals attended. Presenters included Hoover Adger, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., professor of pediatrics By Marti Benedetti at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Robert A. Zucker, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Michigan; Robert F. Anda, M.D., M.S., scientific consultant, Medicine and Public Health Policy; and Constance Weisner, Dr.P.H., L.C.S.W., professor department of psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco. David Rosenberg, M.D., chief of child psychiatry and psychology and Miriam L. Hamburger Endowed Chair of Child Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, a professor at Wayne State University, and the symposium moderator, agrees the event would not have happened without the Cummings’ gift. “This symposium sprang out of their commitment to Children’s Hospital and doing more to help the underserved in this community,” Rosenberg says. “We share the same passion to educate the families we serve and the professionals who see these children and adolescents.” Children of substance abusers often end up with their own substance abuse problems, have trouble with relationships, and face a host of health issues. The Cummings have sponsored lectures on pediatric/adolescent substance abuse topics for nearly 10 years, but this year they pulled out all the stops to gather the foremost experts on the subject. “Most professionals who see these children don’t have the training in this area and don’t ask the right questions, so the problems are not caught,” Rosenberg says. Cummings, along with Rosenberg, hopes a white paper will be created as a result of the information shared at the symposium. “We hope to see it published in major medical journals such as The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or the journal, Pediatrics,” Rosenberg says. Sis Wenger, president and CEO of NACoA, says the symposium was important not just for Detroit but nationally. “We began planning this before all the health care reform discussion about cost containment and efficiencies began in Washington,” she says. She adds that it was a most important step in spreading the message “that children of addicted parents deserve and need caring adults to help balance out the chaos at home.” Research shows that the chronic emotional stress of living with an alcoholic or drug user has an adverse effect on a child’s neurodevelopment. Studies have shown persons who have grown up with such adverse childhood experiences die ten years earlier than their peers, are more often diagnosed with diabetes, cancer, anxiety disorders or depression. Having an addicted parent can have a powerful impact on a child, but it is worse if the addict is the mother. “It plays out in the children’s social and emotional stability,” Wenger says. “The symposium stressed that every primary care person needs to understand that it does damage to do nothing (to help these children),” Wenger says. “So many people in the medical field feel they cannot fix the problem and therefore do not make an effort to help it surface. On the contrary, they make an enormous difference just by simply telling the child there are safe people to help them, like a teacher or school social worker or grandparent. Children also need to be told it is not their fault and they should ask for help for themselves.” Wenger adds that research shows that ignoring the problem places a great burden on the health care system. Children of alcoholics and addicts have more accidents and get sick more often. “The great myth is most of these kids turn out alright anyway. But they don’t. They are at risk for multiple physical and mental health problems for the rest of their lives. So many kids get a raw deal and it doesn’t have to be that way,” Wenger says. Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 13 Child Protection Center team advocates for children W e’ve all seen the headlines and watched shocking television stories about children who are abused or neglected. The cases seem so horrific that they are hard to believe. But when the stories are true and children’s lives are in jeopardy, the team of experts at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Child Protection Center (CPC) is ready to provide a full range of critical services to children and their families. Children’s Hospital has been a long-time leader in providing medical treatment, care and advocacy in the area of child maltreatment. The CPC was created in 2005 and is part of the hospital’s Helppie Institute for Child Health Advocacy, named for supporters Richard and Leslie Helppie. The institute provides advocacy and outreach programs to assist families. The CPC is led by Medical Director Dena Nazer, M.D. and Clinical Support Services Director Shirley Mann Gray, L.M.S.W., and provides comprehensive medical evaluations and assessments for Dena Nazer, M.D. 14 About Children’s Summer 2009 By Sheila M. Edwards children with all forms of suspected maltreatment including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. “We are trained to evaluate children in a friendly environment. We also assist parents in taking steps to protect their children to prevent further abuse from happening,” reports Nazer. “Often, the exam process is therapeutic; leaving the child relieved and reassured that they are still healthy and normal after the abuse.” “After an exam, we refer children to the appropriate medical, counseling, legal and other services they may need. In certain cases abuse is diagnosed and we help protect a child from an abusive environment. In others, we may diagnose a medical or congenital condition that mimics abuse and assist in keeping the child with his or her family,” she says. In addition to Nazer, the CPC staff includes Martha Kerr, L.M.S.W., Deborah Kennedy, R.N., and Sabrina Biggens. They help not only families but many others in the community. The team works with policy-makers and legislators; collaborates with Child Protective Services, social workers and law enforcement personnel; and when necessary, testifies in court. Sadly, abuse and neglect exists. But with the help of the Child Protection Center, the most vulnerable in southeast Michigan will be protected. Madeline Balice holds Terri Rouser in the NICU. Children’s Hospital employee spends spare time volunteering at… the hospital! M adeline Balice of St. Clair Shores has logged more than 300 volunteer hours at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan over the past three years, mostly on Friday nights. What makes that remarkable is that she logs in as a volunteer in the same hospital where she spends five days a week on the job. An administrative assistant by day in the office of the Chair of Pediatrics, Madeline began her volunteer shifts at the front lobby information desk. More recently, she’s been holding and feeding babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Erin O’Mara, the volunteer/community relations manager, points to Madeline as one of the reasons the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is a special place. “We can always count on her,” O’Mara says. “Madeline is very calming, and in this environment that’s really helpful.” O’Mara remembers when Balice was volunteering on the fourth floor, where parents and family of the hospital’s sickest By Marcy Hayes children wait for news. The dynamic of the room changes from hour to hour, but the recurring theme is stress. Madeline, she says, made sure the families had what they needed without interfering. Her calm demeanor makes her equally adept at helping the fussiest of babies in the NICU. When Madeline arrived at Children’s Hospital, she says, she quickly felt as though she’d found a home and a purpose. It was just six months into her day job that she signed up with Volunteer Services. She became one of the first friendly smiles visitors encountered at the information desk and strived to make each visitor’s path a little less anxious. “I like being able to help people,” Madeline says. “Whether it’s showing someone how to navigate the hospital or comforting a baby, I get to help people. And that’s a great feeling,” – a feeling worth holding onto, even when her workweek is done. For more information on becoming a volunteer, call (313) 745-5326 or visit www.childrensdmc.org. Kelly (third from left) pictured with representatives from the Chase Away Foundation which included (left to right) Director Jennifer Schneider, Vice President Brendan Brosnan, President and Founder Brenda Brosnan, Advisory Board Member Mike Babcock, and Event and Media Chair Kathy Jaroslawski. 16 About Children’s Summer 2009 renda and Brendan Brosnan and their son Chase know firsthand the discomfort and boredom that goes with a long-term illness. Chase was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, which is a form of cancer, and opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS), a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the brain and all motor function. Chase was treated at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan for six years before the cancer and OMS were in remission. To show their gratitude to Children’s Hospital and to help other children undergoing long-term treatment, the Brosnans founded The Chase Away Foundation and recently made a $50,000 donation to the hospital’s 6 West Treatment Room and its Hematology/Oncology Clinic. The 6 West Treatment Room, where Chase was treated eight years ago, is getting a $20,000 renovation so that children feel more relaxed and comfortable while receiving invasive treatments. It will be renamed the Chase Away Treatment Room. The remaining balance along with funds from other generous donors goes toward By Marti Benedetti remodeling the Hematology/Oncology Clinic’s patient rooms, hallway, infusion room, lighting and equipment. Brenda says while Chase, who is now 9, was a patient, she and Brendan donated a large, flat-screen television and bought several “poke” toys, such as LEGOs, Webkinz and DVDs, for the Hematology/Oncology Clinic. “Kids come in and out of there everyday and, like Chase, they get lots of (needle) pokes. These toys take their mind off the treatment,” she adds. “We felt other children did not have the luxuries our child had, so we wanted to give back,” she says. Next on the agenda for the foundation is a September 24 fundraiser “An Evening with Mike Babcock,” the Detroit Red Wings Head Coach, who is a supporter and advisory board member of the foundation. “Our goal for 2009 is to raise enough funds to buy new flat screen televisions and DVD players for every bed on the oncology floor,” Brenda says. For more information about The Chase Away Foundation, visit www.chaseaway.org. Comfort Bears are a source of reassurance I f you’ve ever been hospitalized and required an IV placed as part of your treatment, you know that finding a vein can be difficult. Often pokes can be painful and stressful and are one of the most common fears and experiences for hospitalized children. Fortunately, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan IV Team specializes in making the experience as easy for patients and families as possible through their exceptional skills and Comfort Bears. A new program at the hospital, Comfort Bears are given to children exclusively by the IV Team to cuddle as a distraction or a reward for an IV start. The six-inch tall bears are available in many colors. Comfort Bears are the creation of jeweler Gary Wachler of David Wachler & Sons in Birmingham, Michigan, who was inspired by his childhood memory of spending the night at Children’s Hospital in a large ward with several other children. “It was boring and lonely,” recalls Wachler. “Fortunately, my mother had left behind four or five puppets for me to play with. The other kids and I ended up entertaining ourselves by putting on a puppet show, kind of like Kukla, By Sheila M. Edwards Fran and Ollie, which was popular at the time,” said Wachler. Comforting others who are hospitalized or who are in need is part of the Wachler family tradition. “My mom, Eileene, used to have us spend time doing projects and making things that we would take to hospitals and other organizations, especially during holidays,” said Wachler. They continue the tradition today through the non-profit Comfort Bears for Kids. The bears are $5.00 each and donations can be made by visiting www.comfortbearsforkids.org, or the Comfort Bears for Kids Cause page on Facebook. The donor may earmark the donations for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. “Someone who has been here and knows what it is like really understands what is needed. Gary knows first-hand what can make a difference for a patient,” said Kelly Landis, special events officer at Children’s Hospital. Gary Wachler and his Comfort Bears help kids get through a difficult experience with smiles instead of tears. Gary Wachler is comforting patients with Comfort Bears. Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 17 Children’s Health Night funds safety net for needy families I magine not having enough money to purchase the necessary prescriptions for your child after being discharged from the hospital. Or imagine not being able to get home from the hospital because you don’t have bus fare. Unfortunately, these are very real problems that some parents face. Kelsey Peregord pals around with Paws at the 2008 Children’s Health Night. 18 About Children’s Summer 2009 Fortunately, a safety net is in place to help those in need. Children’s Health Night, an annual event held during a Detroit Tigers game helps raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s family assistance fund. The fund, administered by the hospital’s social work department, provides emergency support for patients and their families. Sometimes patients and their families need help to pay for parking, meals, By Sheila M. Edwards transportation or medication, especially when a child is hospitalized unexpectedly. “These are emergency situations that may not be covered by insurance that are funded through the social work family assistance fund,” explains Mary Mueller, manager of social work at Children’s Hospital. Money from the family assistance fund also helps patients and their families when regular sources of support cannot. Mueller listed several examples of one-time necessities that the family assistance fund has provided for in the past, such as the building of a wheelchair ramp, the funeral of a child whose family is financially distressed, and support for families who lose their jobs due to the illness of their child. “We even purchased a room air conditioner for a young patient who had skin wounds that would not heal without a special bed/mattress that generated a lot of heat. Because it was mid-summer, the heat would have been unbearable and he would not have been able to leave the hospital. The room air conditioner allowed him to go home to heal,” she said. “The social work department gets involved whenever a non-medical issue is identified,” said Mueller. “We assess the issues, determine what resources are needed and provide support in all types of situations.” This year’s Children’s Health Night will be held on Wednesday, August 5 at 7:05 p.m. when the Tigers play the Baltimore Orioles. Tickets are $22 each and may be purchased by contacting Saudia Twine at (313) 993-8816 or [email protected]. Toys, games and books T By Rosemary Tokatlian oys and games are essential to providing children with a much needed distraction while they are in the hospital. They also serve an important therapeutic function by helping to make the hospital environment more normal. You can help the patients at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan throughout the year by donating new toys, stuffed animals, books, DVDs, games, and arts and craft supplies. It’s important that these items are new to protect the health of all patients. Latex-free band-aids with child friendly patterns are also needed. A wish list is available on the hospital’s Web site by visiting www.childrensdmc.org and clicking on the pink “To Donate” button. Donations may be delivered to the Development Office at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Philanthropy allows us to perform cutting-edge research aimed at improving child health while educating medical professionals in the art of caring for young people. Your gifts are deeply appreciated and directly impact the lives of children who benefit from pediatric focused health programs. Several endowments have been established for the benefit of Children’s Hospital. Endowment funds are created with a minimum gift of $50,000 and are acknowledged at the giving level of the donor who initiated the fund or the value of the principal of the fund, whichever is greater. A portion of the earned income provides annual support for programs and services vital to the patients in our care; the remaining income is reinvested to build the principal, creating a lasting legacy for the benefit of generations to come. First, we believe that no region can achieve excellence without first-rate health care facilities. Children’s health is paramount, as it helps build the future of our community. Also, as the parents of two young children, my wife, Jodi, and I feel very fortunate that their childhood has included only routine illnesses. We want to help situations when other parents – people just like us – need the highest level of care to help their children become healthy. Clinical Physical Therapy Specialist, Children’s Hospital of Michigan I give to Children’s Hospital to support my department so that the children I treat can get better equipment and have adequate access to therapy. I choose to donate to Children’s Hospital rather than other charities because I am able to give from my vacation bank which I don’t typically use. I have had a special connection with Children’s Hospital ever since I started as a volunteer in 1994. I then worked as a student physical therapist and I now have been employed by the hospital for 10 years as a physical therapist. 42 About Children’s Summer 2009 Volna Clermont, M.D. Chester Coccia, M.D. Sanford Cohen, M.D. Ms. Beverly Cole Mrs. Lisa M. It is the safety net for primary care for thousands of children in and around Detroit. In addition, it is a source of outstanding subspecialty care that benefits not only children and families in this area, but regionally, nationally and internationally. All of our pediatric training, including medical school clerkship, pediatric residency and subspecialty training occurred at Children’s Hospital. We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to train in and work at an institution that focuses solely on taking the best care of children. We have only been parents of a patient once, but it was enough to remind us how lucky we are both personally and professionally to have Children’s Hospital as part of our community. As child advocates and as parents, we feel it is important to support Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Children’s Hospital of Michigan childrensdmc.org 47 Advocacy Dear Friends, Children’s Hospital of Michigan was founded in 1886 by Dr. Charles Devendorf and a group of prominent Detroit women in response to a little girl who died of diphtheria. They provided the initial funds to begin this great institution that has helped so many children live healthier and happier lives for 123 years. Throughout our history, there has been one common denominator that has allowed us to continue to offer the very best health care to the children of our community – our caring donor family. Without donors like you, we would not be able to find cures for the most complex of childhood diseases, develop pioneering new treatments, perform lifesaving surgeries and provide compassionate family-centered care. It is through your help that we are able to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
