WHATARERATSPORTS?
RatSportsarebasedonhuntingandteamworkskills.Historically,ratcatchersandtheir
dogsofferedtheirservicestofarmerstocontrolvermin,helpingtoconserveandto
preservetheirgrainandconsequentlyprotecttheinhabitantsfromdisease.The
purposeoftheBarnHuntandtheBrushHunteventsistodemonstrateteamwork
betweenthehandleranddogteam.Thedogmustdisplayhisverminhuntingabilityby
findingandmarkingratsinabarn-likeorfield-likesettinginwhichstraw/haybalesare
used.Thehandlermustdisplayhisabilitytoreadthedog’ssignal.

BRUSHHUNTING
BrushHuntingreliescompletelyonyourdog’sabilitytolocatealivequarry.BrushHunts
areusuallyheldoutsideinawoodedorfallowfencedarea.Thesizeoftheareais
determinedbythelevelofdifficulty.Thehigherthelevel,thebiggertheareathedog
mustsearch.Onlyonetubecontainingaliveratisusedforthisevent.Thetubemust
remaininthesamepositionforeveryteam,andthehandleristoldwherethequarryis
beforecompeting.Thetubeistotallyoutofsight,coveredslightlyinleaves,branchesor
straw.Thejudgestopsthetimerwhenheconsidersthatthedogindicates,ina
satisfactoryfashion,thepresenceoftherat.Two(2)minutesareallocatedtofindthe
rat.Duringthefirstminute,onlythedogisallowedinthering.Thehandlermust
remainattheentranceonthedesignedmatandwaitforpermissiontoenterthering
andtohelphisdogfortheremainingminute.Thehandlermaydirecthisdogtothearea
wheretheratislocated.Undernocircumstanceshemaytouchthedogorthetubeas
thisresultsinautomaticdisqualification.Thehandlermayencouragehisdogthewhole
timebutdirectionalcueswillleadtodisqualification,asthejudgewantstoevaluatethe
abilityofthedogtolocatethelivequarry.Completingaruninlessthan2minutesis
considereda“pass”andscoreswillbeusedforplacement,however,yourdoghasto
findtheratinthefirstminutetoearnaqualification.Qualifyinginyourfirstorsecond
eversanctionednovicebrushhuntrunleadstoBrushHuntingInstinctTitle.
BARNHUNTING
Barnhuntingrequiresgoodcommunicationwithyourdoganditsabilitytodiscriminate
odorsandliveanimals.Barnhuntingheldeitherindoorsoroutdoors.Thelandor
buildingusedisdefinedbyfencesorwalls.Dependingonthelevelofdifficulty,many
tubesmaybeused.Thesecanbeempty,orcontainingeitherratsand/orratlitter.The
sizeoftheringisthesameforalllevelsofcompetition.Tubesarehiddeninbalesofhay.
Thetubesmustbeinplainviewofthehandlerandthejudge,beingmoreorlessvisible
dependingonthecompetitionlevel.TheTeamisallocated2minutestofindtherat/s.
Thehandlerandthedogentertheringatthesametime.Thehandlercangiveone
verbalcommandthenmustremainsilentforthefirst30secondswhilethedoghunts.
Afterwards,thehandlermayencourageanddirecthisdogverbally.Thehandleris
responsibletomakethetimerstops,calling‘Rat!’tothejudge,whenhebelievesthat
hisdoghasfoundarat.Shouldtheteambeinerrorandhaveidentifiedawrongtube,
thetimerwillcontinueand5secondswillbeaddedtothefinaltimeofthetest.
Touchingthedogbeforethejudgeconfirmsthatthelastrattubeisfoundortouchinga
tubethathasnotyetbeenidentifiedleadstoanautomaticdisqualification.Youmay
howeverpetyourdogshortlyafterhehasfoundarattube.Thetube(s)wheretherats
arehiddenareswitchedplacesforeachparticipant.Atthenovicelevel,thereare3
tubes:1rat,1litterand1emptyandclean.Completingaruninlessthan2minutesis
consideredto“PASS”andgoesforplacementbutyourrunmustbefault-freetoearn
yourqualification.Qualifyinginyourfirstorsecondeversanctionednovicebarnhunt
runleadstoBarnHuntingInstinctTitle.
GO-TO-GROUND/SUPEREARTH(Notofferedatthisevent)
Forphysicallyabledogsthatare15’’orlessatthewithers,sanctionedartificialterrier
huntingeventswillbesoonoffered.Thisisaneventthatsimulatesahuntingsituation.
Thedogtraversesa9’’x9’’tunneltoreachaquarry(usuallyacagedliverat)attheend
ofthetunnel.Thetunnelhasoneorseveral90degreesturnstomakeitharderforthe
dog.Thedogmustreachthequarryasfastaspossiblebutalsomarkitforadetermined
amountoftimewithoutleavingit.Acceptablemarkingcanincludebarking,whining,
staringandscratching.Completingarunwithoutexitingthetunnelandmarkingthe
quarryforatleast5secondsisconsidereda“pass”buttoqualify,markingisusually
from30to90secondsdependingonthelevel.“Q”runswillplacebefore“passed”runs
forplacement,evenwithalongertunneltime.Qualifyinginoneofyourfirstthreeever
sanctionednovicego-to-groundhuntrunleadstoTerrierHuntingInstinctTitle.

order,andmaymissyourturnifyouarenotpresentthesecondtimeyournameis
called.BarnhuntwillstartafterBrushHunthasstartedtoallowforminimumchanges
totherunningorder.
- Registrationtableisnotguaranteedtobeopenaftercheck-intimeandthiscouldlead
toamissedrun.
- Ifyourunmorethanonedog,youwillbeaskedtoletatleast3otherdogsgobetween
yourowndogs.
- Ringwillcloseandjudgewillleaveattheannouncedtime.Itwillnotbepossibleto
creditthemissedrunforanothereventorday.
- Puppiesmaysearchonlonglinesthoughthehandlerisnotallowedtoguidethesearch
usingtheleash.Adultdogsmustsearchoffleashintheenclosedarea.
- Nochoke,pinchorelectriccollarsarepermittedwithinproximityofthering.A
Baskervillemuzzlemaybeusedforareactivedog.
TrialInformation
ThissanctionedtrialisheldunderRATS!CANADArulesandregulations.AlleventsareRATS!
CANADArecognizedandapproved.Youwillreceiveane-bookletwithrulesandregulations
priortothetrialdate.Ahardcopywillbeavailableatthesecretary’stableforconsultation
duringtheevent.Alldogsmustbekeptinanx-pen,crateoronleashwhennotinthering.Any
dogengaginginaggressivebehavioratanytimewillberequiredtoleavetrialvenue.Insuch
cases,norefundoffeeswillbepaid.
EntriesandClosingDate
EntriesmustbereceivedbyJanuary10th.Notelephone,faxorelectronicentrieswillbe
accepted.Entriescanbetakendayoftrialonlyifeventisnotfull.

DogswillbejudgedintheirspecificgroupasdeterminedbytheCanadianKennelClub(CKC).
Forthemixbreeds,theownerchoosesthemostrepresentativegroupdependingontheir
dog’sattributes.Ajudgemayreassignyourdogifthechoiceofbreedisconsideredtruly
unfitting.Ajudgecanalsohelpyouinchoosingthebestsuitedgroupforyourmixedbreeds
dogifyouareunsure.
Top3dogsineverygroupandcategorieswillbeawardedplacementrosettes.Puppieswillall
beinthesamegroupforplacements.
DogsthatqualifywillreceiveaQribbonforeachQualifyingrun.
INSTINCTTITLE:TheBarnorBrushHuntInstinctTitlewillbegrantedtonovicedogswho
qualifyinoneoftheirfirsttworunseverineachdiscipline.PuppiescanearntheInstinctTitle
early,butNQdrunsasapuppywillnotcountasfirstnoviceruns.Adogthattitlesasapuppy
doesnotneedtore-titleinnovice,butwillretainbraggingrightsofearninganInstinctTitleas
apup!DogsearningtheInstinctTitlewillreceivearosettementioningifearnedasapuppyor
adultdog.
Therewillbespecialprizesandchampion/reserveawards.

RATCAREANDSAFETY:
RATS!Canadaiscommittedtothehumanetreatmentofratsused
atallRats!Canadaevents.Ratsarerotatedouthourlyoras
applicablebasedonweatherconditionsandotherfactors.Ratsare
chosenandtrainedspecificallyforthesport.Tubesusedarebuilt
fordogANDratsafetyaccordingtospecificratcarerules.Ratswill
notbeharmedinanywayduringorattheendofthetrial;theyare
returninghometobeascaredandlovedasdogscanbe.Please
reporttoRATS!Canadaanyconcernsorunacceptabletreatment
youwitnessinanyratsporteventsowecanfollowthrough.

Competitors,throughsubmissionofentry,acknowledgethattheyareknowledgeableofRATS!CANADArules
andregulationsincludingbutnotlimitedtothefollowingrulesregardingentry:
• Thistrialisopentoalldogsbeingatleast3monthsofage(instinctandbrushhunting)and4monthsof
age(instinctandbarnhunting),includingpurebredandnon-purebred,exceptdogswithinjuriesor
illnesseswhichmaycausethedogpainorgreatdiscomfort,ordogsexhibitingsignsofaggressionthat
threatenthesafetyofotherdogsorhumans.
• RATS!Canadaisworkinghardtowardasystemtoacceptbitchesinseason.However,BISwillnotbe
eligibletocompeteatthisevent.Fullrefundwillbegrantedevenafterclosingdatewithaveterinary
certificate.
• Physicallychallengeddogsareallowedandencouragedtocompete.TheDogsmustnotshowevidence
ofbeinginpainordiscomfort.Thejudgeshallexcuseanydogthatshowsevidenceofpainor
discomfort.
• Naturecalls(forthedog)intheringareNOTdisqualifyingmatterbuttheclockkeepsrunning!
• Physicallychallengedhandlersareallowed.Physicallychallengedowner/handlersshallprovidethe
judgewithawrittendescriptionofhowtheyintendtoworkwiththeirdog.Themodificationmustbe
approximatetothebestofthehandler’sability.Thejudgemustapproveandinitialthemodifications
andattachthewrittendescriptiontothescoresheet.
• AlldogsmustberegisteredwithRATS!CANADAtocompeteforqualifyinglegsandplacements.Itis
yourresponsibilitytoobtainaRATS!CANADADogIDnumber,priortothetrial.Ifyoudonothavea
RATS!CANADAnumberyoumaysubmityourrequestwiththistrialpremium.Yourcardand
numberwillbegiventoyouatthetrial.
• Safetyshallalwaysbeofforemostconsiderationatalltimes.Handlers,throughentryatthisevent,
acceptfullresponsibilityforthemselvesandtheactionsoftheirdogs.
• Theorganizingcommitteemayrefuseanyentryforanyreason.

• THERESHALLBENOREFUNDforentrieswithdrawnaftertheclosingdateorintheeventadogand/or
handleraredismissedfromcompetition,regardlessofreasonforsuchdismissal.
• Thetrialwilltakeplaceindoors,howevertherearenorefundsforweatherrelatedcancellations.
Pleaseallowyourselfadequatetimetogettothetriallocation.
• Alldogsshallbepresentedatringsideinaflatbuckleorsnapcollar,plainharness,orproperlyfitted
martingale(limitedslip)collar.NOchokecollars,prongcollars,orshockcollarsareallowedatringside.
Aproperlyfittedmartingalecollarshouldbebarelylargerthanthecircumferenceofthedog'sneck
whenfullytightened.Puppiesmaycompeteonalongline,howeverthehandlerisnotallowedto
guidethesearchusingtheleash.Adultdogsatalllevelscompetewithoutaleashandcollar.
• Uponsuccessfulcompletionofanexercise,theownermaychoosetobrieflypetortouchthedogasa
rewardbutnotreatsoraccessoriescanbeused.
• Dogsmustremainundercontrolatalltimeswhetheronoroffleashwhileonshowgrounds,including
whenarattubeisfound.Careless,excessivebiting,pawingorshakingwillleadtodisqualification.
• Youmustpickupafteryourdogandyourself.
