PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Gene Kutner
By now the Single and Court homes have
received the blue-wheeled containers from Burlington
County to be used to recycle paper and cardboard. The
County originally was giving us 96-gallon containers,
but after the Board went to the Township Manager to
explain that we have many seniors in our community
that would find it to difficult to handle the large
containers, they agreed to give us the 47 gallon
containers that you have received. We have been advised
that in late spring or early summer you will be able to
include both bottles and cans in the same container and
this will enable you to stop using the green buckets. If
you do not recycle much paper and wish to return the
container, the township will pick it up after the first of
the year, but you will have to pay to buy it back when
you need it to use for cans, bottles and paper in the
spring. The Architectural Review Board has mandated
that the containers cannot be left outside. If you feel
you will have a problem taking the container to the curb
on recycling day, and do not have a neighbor to help
you, call the office and they will get a volunteer to help
you. The Board thanks you for your co-operation.
If you come to the Clubhouse, you have noticed the
fresh coat of paint inside and out. The ballroom will be
finished in February. We have updated the lighting by
using much brighter bulbs that create less heat and use
less electricity. We will be renovating the office to make
it easier for the staff to serve the many residents they

Christmas and Hanukkah, and that you received
everything that you wanted and asked for. (The Holidays
are not just for the little ones)
The first thing that the Social Committee would like
to say is Thank You to Frank Marshall for all of his

that it is not an easy job, but he does it with such ease.
So again, thank you Frank.
For those of you who came to the Holiday Party,
the Social Committee hopes that you all had a good
time. For those of you that missed it, YOU MISSED a
great time and wonderful food.
We are not exactly sure of our calendar of events
yet for 2013, so if anyone has any suggestions PLEASE,
PLEASE let us know.
Also we hope that all who came to our FREE New

From the entire Social Committee: Nadine, Geri,
Ann, Al, Marcy, Dave, Loral, Bob, Marilee, Carol, and

(President’s message continued)
see each day. We are still exploring the use of a ground
solar system for the Clubhouse and the pool which
would save us thousands of dollars in electric bills.
J & S Landscaping has been awarded the contract
by Mt. Laurel Township to remove snow on the streets
in the village. This will save us money because they
will not have to do the driveway aprons twice. In the
past when the township plowed the streets after our
driveways were cleared, J & S had to come back to
plow the aprons at an extra cost. We clean the
driveways and walkways when the snow is three inches
or greater.
It was standing room only when the Doo-Wop group,
the Achords, played the Clubhouse. Congratulations to
Marie Campbell and her committee for the great work
they do in bringing us these events.

HEALTH & WELFARE COMMITTEE
Health & Welfare Event Schedule
by Marie Campbell
This is an updated schedule thru March of 2013
from your Health & Welfare Committee.
Mark your calendar!
H&W would like to thank the Lenape Honor Society
students along with their leader, Jody Stansbury. 103
Students serviced over 100 homes for the fall clean-up
on Saturday, November 17th. Thank you again!
We know our finale was a success; my committee
worked very hard to make it memorable for each of
you. The Achords are a great Doo Wop group and put
on a toe tapping show. We were very happy with our
sell out attendance. This is what we strive for. We
will keep you posted on different events for 2013; we
hope to see you then. We would like to thank everyone
who has attended any of our events in 2012. Pass the
word; you can’t beat the price!
AARP Driver Safety Program
Here we are 2013; unbelievable. Let’s start with
driving better. As we get a little older we may have
forgotten some of the rules of the road, so let’s refresh
our brain. This AARP Driver Safety Program will save
you a few $$ on your car insurance along with taking
away two points from any traffic violation you may have.
The program is valid for a three-year period.
This is a one day class, Wednesday, January 16. 9 a.m.
– 4 p.m. A one hour break will be at noon. No Lunch is
provided; that will be up to you.
You must present your active AARP membership card
when signing up.
Cost: $12 AARP members, non-members $14. Make
checks payable to “AARP”
Two sign-ups: Tuesday, January 8th, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
and again 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse
The class holds 25 people. Residents come first; we
will have a non-resident list, and you will be more than
welcome to join us if we do not reach a total of 25
residents after the evening sign-up.

LOOKING BACK
WITH JACK
Caring for Caregivers
Being a caregiver is one of the most difficult jobs
you’ll ever do. It is very often thankless; there is no
pay and your attention is required 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.
If you’re caring for someone with Alzheimer’s
disease or other form of dementia it’s even worse. You
can never really sleep because you’re always
listening….are they still in bed, did they fall, did you
hear a door open?
One thing I’ve learned after 15 years of working
with caregivers is that the caregiver actually needs more
help than the patient. Stress is so much more insidious
than we realize. If you don’t do things to mitigate it and
slow down, your body will force you to slow down,
and usually in a very unpleasant way, like a fall or a
broken bone or a serious illness.
The first step is realizing and accepting that you
need help and support. No matter how dedicated and
loving you are, no matter how much you want to care
for your spouse, no one can do it alone.
Reach out and get help. You can contact the Office
on Aging 609-265-5069 or the organization specific to
the disease you’re dealing with (American Heart
Association, www.diabetes.org, etc). If you’re caring
for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other form of
dementia The Tender, a charity in Moorestown that
specializes in dementia, has a support group. The group
meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:15
p.m. TheTender.org or 856-234-5999.
If there is enough interest here in Holiday Village
I’d be happy to start a support group right here. If you’re
a caregiver and you need help, reach out; you don’t
have to do this alone.
Barbara Fetty, CAEd (Certified Alzheimer’s Educator)
(Also the charity I work for, The Tender, has another
program, “Drive People Happy” that may be of
interest. We provide rides to medical appointments
and grocery shopping to homebound seniors.)

AROUND THE HOUSE
with Shirley Solton
I was planning to write about the zillion ways to
cook a turkey that we saw on TV, but since it is a few
days past Thanksgiving that I am writing this, I thought
I would tell you what I was thankful for this year.
I guess I’ve made at least 50 turkeys and usually
made the dinners until the younger members took
over. Some have moved further away and all are not 10
minutes away anymore. My elder daughter recently
retired and had moved to the shore permanently, and
wanted to have the dinner at her house, since for the
first time in 40 years she didn’t have a 12-hour working
day on Friday. Her children had moved to North Jersey
and Lower Manhattan. I would be picked up and
Thanksgiving was settled. Then along came Superstorm
Sandy!
Shore residents had to evacuate until when? The
storm came. Power went out in lower Manhattan and
was not turned back on for weeks, leaving grandson,
pregnant wife and two-year- old cold and in the dark.
Fortunately water didn’t reach them or their car in the
underground garage. As soon as possible, he drove
them to the house of his sister who did have power.
Since Popi and Nana were already there, they had a
nice family time together until my daughter could return
home to see the damage. Nothing major; crawlspace
under the house had heat ducts filled with water that
had to be removed and replaced. If she had a basement,
it would have been flooded.
I saw the devastation at Ventnor and Margate. The
homes looked OK outside, but their insides were
damaged by water. Everything had to be torn out and
down and thrown away. I saw piles of walls, flooring
planks, sofas, large bags of trash still standing at the
curbs. Daughter said a front loader went up and down
streets scooping up debris. So sad.
So, Thanksgiving was on, we all were together, the
food was delicious, the little ones were a delight and
all were very, very thankful. It was one we’ll all
remember. I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful
too. We were the lucky ones.

RESTAURANT DOINGS
By Art & Renee Dorst
Happy New Year to all!
Some of us might be feeling a little “weighty” as
we tend to indulge during the holiday season. The most
popular New Year’s resolution is to start on a diet/
exercise program to drop those extra pounds. If that’s
what you’re considering - the exercise room at our
Clubhouse is available to all residents. Ready, Get
Set, Go!
The following two dining spots are a departure from
the usual chain restaurants that have overtaken every
neighborhood. A brief description follows:
Fifty members of The Mt. Laurel AARP Chapter,
(including many Villagers) had their holiday luncheon
at Marco’s Restaurant located in the Indian Springs
Country Club in Marlton. The overwhelming consensus
was that the food and service was very good. Marco’s
is open for lunch and dinner. There are daily “themed”
dinners listed on their website. Prices are consistent
with a fine dining experience. However, there is a “Buy
One, Get One Free” coupon for up to $15 in the 2013
Entertainment Book, (read the fine print though). Be
sure to check the hours and menu on their website or
call 596-1106.
Steak 38 on Rt. 38 in Cherry Hill was always a
favorite on the fine dining scene, but had closed for a
number of years as the owner concentrated on his shore
restaurant. We didn’t realize they had re-opened until
we drove by one evening. Owner/chef Joe DiAmore
joined up with long time friend, Ben Blumberg of
Barnacle Ben’s Seafood fame. We think their Early
Bird Dinners are an excellent value and good eating.
The times are Mon. – Fri.; from 4 – 6:30 p.m. and
Saturday from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Dinner includes a
complimentary dish of roast peppers, bread and butter,
a choice of soup or salad, an entrée (approximately 15
to choose from), a twice baked potato, and for dessert
– your choice of ice cream, rice or bread pudding. The
cost of most selections is in the $15 range. They still
prepare Caesar Salad the old fashioned way; that is
tableside while you watch.
You can see the Early Bird Menu or the regular
menu on their website. Reservations are recommended
– call 662-3838. Closed for lunch.
Have you come across a restaurant you’ve enjoyed?

THE CALENDAR OF
ROMULUS
for Easter. This prompted England to finally move
Britain’s New Year’s Day to Jan. 1,
Ever since, much of the world has operated under
the solar Gregorian Calendar, but there are exceptions,
most using lunar calendars. Remember the North’s 1968
Tet Offensive ? Its fierce gun battles started on Jan. 31,
the Vietnamese New Year’s Day. China and much of
Islam have similar lunar dates.
Hindus celebrate the New Year in mid-April, and
Iran’s observance soon follows, on the vernal equinox.
The Hebrew New Year is Rosh Hashanah, a two-day
observance starting on the first day of Tisurie, the seventh
month in the Hebrew calendar. In the Hebrew count,
2012 was Year 5773.
By celebrating the fresh start Year on Jan. 1,
we’re in step with the Western World. So, to all:
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
by Don Rosser
Romulus has come down in history as a co-founder
of Rome, but he has another claim to fame. He
pioneered the calendar we still use today.
Produced circa 700 B.C., the Romulus Calendar
had 10 months plus an unnamed period of winter. The
10 months were Maritus, Aprilis, Maius, Junius,
Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and
December. In 709 B.C., his successor replaced the
nameless winter period with Januarius and Februarius.
Some of the months were named for Roman gods;
some simply numbered them. April is the exception; its
derivation is debated. Some believe it was named for
Aphrodite; other say April was derived from the Latin
verb aperire, “to open,” as the buds of Spring. The
truth is lost in time.
January honors Janus, the god of doors; February is
for Februa, god of purification; March for Mars, god of
war; May for Maia, goddess of Spring; and June for
Juno, goddess of marriage and women’s welfare. The
remaining months, now wrongly numbered, were
Quintilis from the Latin words for fifth (quint), Sextilis
(sixth), SEPTember, OCTober, NOVember, and
DECember.
In 45 B.C., Emperor Julius Caesar edited the
Romulus Calendar, trying (unsuccessfully) to make it
coincide with the actual solar year. He also re-named
the fifth month for himself. Thus we got July (replacing
Quintilis). Two decades later, his grand nephew,
Emperor Augustus Caesar, also appropriated a calendar
month. Thus we got August (replacing Sextilis).
Later, Emperor Nero also tried to put his name into
the calendar, but he was too weird to make it stick. To
produce light, Nero burned Christians in his garden at
night. For this and many other reasons, Neronius
reverted to Aprilis after Nero’s suicide.
Pope Gregory XIII tweaked the Julian Calendar in
1582, to remove an 11-minute discrepancy that, over
the centuries, caused holiday dates to move through the
seasons. His purpose was to stabilize the church’s date

Holiday Village Directory update
One of the most obvious conclusions after working on the Village Directory for most of the past year was
that changes in listings simply weren’t reaching the Directory Manager. In an attempt to both collect and publish
directory changes, your Communications Committee will be doing the following:
In every month’s Villager, you will find a “Hail & Farewell” notice. We will publish listings for new
Holiday Village residents and will let you know - insofar as we know - of neighbors who have departed the
Village.
Departure entries will not be specific as to the reason for departure. Only the name will be listed.
Arrival listings will be formatted as in a standard Directory entry:
BONAPARTE, NAPOLEON LONGWOOD, ST HELENA
1-769-1821 [email protected]
Changes will be formatted flexibly depending on what information has changed.
