TheCAMAN Crier September 2015 www.mowcnola.org Edition 2 From the Presidents Pen…. What a wonderful Welcome Brunch! I’d like to thank our VP’s, Charlene Wenrich and Karen Greig for all their hard work in making this event so special and welcoming. To all board members, I’d like to say thank you for stepping up and stepping in to help make this event such a success. Thank you for your raffle donations and all the delicious salads and desserts you brought. A very special thank you goes to Mrs. Pat Mills for opening up her home to us. Thank you for all you have done for MOWC these last three years. You will be missed, but you will be back to visit so no “goodbyes”. It was great to see so many new faces and many returning friends. I have heard so many new members are already taking advantage of the opportunities with MOWC. Our club is an integration of members from different backgrounds and experiences, which makes us unique to most clubs. Our Welcome Brunch is a great start to our social season, and I thank each of you for making the effort to attend. There was a lot of information shared at the brunch and if you don’t remember it all please don’t worry. You can visit our website at www.mowcnola.org or email me at [email protected] with any questions you might have concerning upcoming events or volunteer opportunities. I mentioned at the Brunch we were in need of a few volunteers. I would like to thank Veronica Gutierrez for volunteering to be our Parliamentarian. We still need liaisons for the Coast Guard and Air Force. If you are interested please let me know. This will be the last complimentary newsletter you will receive, if you have not renewed your membership. Future newsletters will only be sent out to MOWC members. Though our membership continues throughout the year, in order to have your information included in the directory, you must join by November 1. Dues are still only $25 a social year. So join the fun and become a member if you have not already done so. I hope to see you at our next event, the Chalmette Battlefield in September. In keeping with the many of these traditions, the Military Officers Wives Club (MOWC) contribution is an annual Ball hosted by the Krewe of CAMAN. CAMAN stands for Coast Guard, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy. The Krewe of CAMAN is an official, registered female Krewe with City of New Orleans. All female members of the MOWC automatically gain membership in the Krewe of CAMAN. The CAMAN Ball originated as a Ball given by the Navy Officers Wives Club to give a "taste" of what went on at a traditional Mardi Gras Ball in New Orleans. Back then, only on rare occasions were military members who didn't have city connections invited to be a part of the activities of the "secret" societies (Krewes) that make up the core of Mardi Gras Fetes. When the MOWC was established, the Krewe of CAMAN was born. This will be our 37th year of this wonderful tradition. Each year a Ball Captain is chosen to plan and lead the festivities. She may choose a Lieutenant to assist and a committee is established. The theme of the Ball changes every year. By tradition, the outline of the other Krewes in the city is followed. 9 Each year at the Royal Dinner a Court consisting of 5 Maids (one representing each Service) is chosen and announced. It is also at the Royal Dinner that the CAMAN King and Queen are chosen but their identity remains a closely guarded secret until they are presented on the evening of the Ball. Any member of the MOWC may have their name submitted for this once in a lifetime experience by indicating their interest on the MOWC membership form. This year's theme is CAMAN's Excellent Adventure and will be held on at the Riverside Hilton at the base of Poydras Street in New Orleans on January 16th 2016 at 6pm. The dress of the evening is Black Tie or Service Mess Dress. Female Military Members may opt for the their Service Mess Dress or Long Gown, which will be worn by all other female attendees. Seating will be tables of 10 with a cash bar. No outside food or beverages are allowed to be brought in by the hotel. WE ARE THE GUEST OF THE HOTEL AND MUST ABIDE BY THESE RULES. Reservation forms are included in this newsletter. It's fun, it's tradition, it's Mardi Gras! Don't miss it.
