Teacher Appreciation Week
By: Josh Leham

In honor of Teacher
Appreciation
Week,
Elk Point-Jefferson hosted an
assembly to recognize outstanding staff for their service
to the school. Staff members who have worked at the
school for five, ten, fifteen,
twenty, twenty-five, thirty,
thirty-five, and forty years
were recognized and given
an EPJ coat and a certificate.
This year, EPJ honored Mrs. Marjo Johnson,
Mr. Cole Knippling, Mrs.
Janet Ries, and Mrs. Joy
Schuldt, each serving 10
years at Elk Point-Jefferson.
Miss Rita Ahmann and Mr.
Jerry Klumper were recognized for 40 years of service.
Both
Klumper
and Ahmann taught several current staff members
and numerous parents of
current students. The dedication of these staff members is truly admirable.
The coats and certificates were presented to the
staff members by the school
board, President Cherie Noteboom, Vice President Nancy
Adema, Chuck Donnelly,
Kari Mau, and Travis Geary.

school to know that they are
an essential part of our team

Another way EPJ is
celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week is by reading trivia
questions about high school
and middle school teachers during announcements.
EPJ wants to thank
all teachers for their dedication and hard work they do for

On November 14th, seventeen
of Elk Point-Jefferson’s finest
musicians from middle and
high school attended the annual Yankton Region I Honor
Band Festival at Yankton
High School. This year, instead of auditions, students
were selected from over two
hundred and fifty students in
the area based on nomination from EPJ band director
Aaron Schmeling. The two
bands were split according to
age. High school participants
included Lynsey Kunder, Kelsie Olsen, and Sydney Bosquet on flute, Josh Leman and
Noah VonSeggern on trombone, Jordan VonSeggern on
baritone saxophone, Elena
Giorgio, Elizabeth Peirce, and
Matthew Giorgio on percussion, Emily Peirce and Brianna Chicoine on clarinet,
and Emma Proudy on trumpet. The band was directed
by Dr. Kevin Kessler, Director of Athletic Bands at South

Fall Show
By: Matthew Giorgio
On
Saturday
November 12, the Elk
Point-Jefferson Show Choir,
Momentum, performed their
annual Fall Show. Twentysix talented students performed the show after about
two months of practice.
This year, the students used their creative
and kinesthetic abilities to
choreograph different parts
of the songs. Momentum
sang and danced to a medley of rock songs through
the ages ranging from “Rock
and Roll Is Here to Stay” to
“ABC” by Michael Jackson.
Between
show
choir sets, students had
the option to share their
musical talents by performing in small groups or solos.
Show choir practices
where held twice a week before school to prepare for Fall
Show. Now that the Fall Show
is over, Momentum will begin
practicing for a new competition show which will be used
to compete at competitions in
the area throughout the winter
and spring. EPJ will be able to
see their competition show at
Jazz Night on February ninth.

ticipants from middle school

LaFerrier on flute, Ben Hanson on percussion, Nora Kastning on clarinet, and Claire
LaFerrier on trumpet. Middle
school band was directed by
Mrs. Renita Dose, who has
been a Lennox band director
for twenty years. Students
spent the day rigorously practicing and perfecting their
music. That night, students
preformed in a concert of glorious sound.
Senior Spotlights
The Elk Point–
Jefferson winter sports season kicked off last week. The
Middle School girls’ basketball season tipped off with
their first game of the year
against
Alcester-Hudson.
The Huskies have
been practicing hard for weeks
and are very excited to finally
begin playing games. The
seventh grade team is coached
by veteran middle school basketball coach Troy McCreary,
and the eighth grade team is
coached by Manny Scarmon.
The Huskies have
been very busy with six
games in the last two weeks.
They will continue to have
a packed schedule over
the next month in order to
play as many games as possible in their short season.
If you’re looking
to catch the Huskies in action, make sure you catch
a game soon. The last Huskies home game is December 15 against our archrival
Dakota Valley. The rest of
the Huskies’ schedule can be
found on the EPJ homepage.
The hard work the
Huskies are putting in now
will prepare them for the
next level and the rest of their
careers.

As
the
holiday
season approaches, EPJ’s
annual Angel Tree project returns. This gift-giving program is run by Mrs.
Derby’s Family and Consumer Science classes and
has been helping families
in need in the Elk Point
area for twenty-four years.
Each
year,
a
family is able to anonymously compile a list of winter
clothing needed for their children. The list is then placed
as an ornament on the school
Christmas tree in the high
school commons. People
from around the school and
community then pick an
ornament and go to the of-
fice to register that “angel.”
Those who choose an ornament will then buy the
items on the list, wrap them,
and return it to the office.
Throughout
the
school year, the vending machine in the school has been
filled with snacks made by
Mrs. Derby’s classes. Those
proceeds also go towards the
Angel Tree. The class will
then make a list of items and
spend a day purchasing those
items for the Angel Tree.
Students then return back to
school to wrap those gifts.
The program is a
great tradition here at EPJ,
and a good example of how
those can give back to the
community.
