Programminghasbecomeanimportantskillintechnical/professional
communicationandacrossthedigitalhumanities.Inthiscourse,wewill
engagewithdiscourseaboutcontemporaryprogrammingandcoding,
particularlyasitrelatestothehumanities.Wewillalsodosignificant
hands-onworkwithkeyandemergingtechnologiesfordigital
production,textmanagement,contentmanagement,naturallanguage
processing,anddataminingandanalysis.Dependingonyourprojects,
yourtoolsmayincludeHTML,CSS,XML,XQuery,XPath,R,andTEI,along
withappropriateprogramminglanguages(e.g.,PythonandPerl).
Youmaynotknowalloftheseacronyms,andthat’sok!Noparticular
priortechnicalknowledgeisexpected,butyouwillbeexpectedto
challengeyourselftoexploreallofthekeytoolsets.Assessmentwillbe
basedonshortessaysandondigitalprojects,includingafinalproject
thatengageswithyourownwork.
Youwillnotberequiredtopurchaseanymaterialsforthiscourse,
althoughyoumaywishtobuysomebooksorsoftwaredependingon
whattechnologiesyouendupusing.Wewillberelyingononlinetools
andPDFsofreadings.

Mostofthetoolswewilluseareopensourceorveryinexpensive,and
youshouldn’thavetobuyanyparticulartoolsforthecourse.Youwill,
however,needtohaveregular,administrator-levelaccesstoacomputer
sothatyoucaninstallandcustomizeyourtoolsets.Ifyoudon’tcurrently
haveamachinethatyoucancustomize,I’mhappytomake
recommendationsofsomeveryinexpensive(<$200)options.

Keepcloudbackupcopiesofalltheworkyouproduceforthisclass.

Don’tdeleteanyofyourfilesjustbecauseyou’veturnedinthe
assignment;youmaywishtoreviseandre-submit.
ActiveandSubstantiveParticipation
Activeparticipationinallcourseactivitiesandassignmentsisextremely
important.Pleaseplanondoingthefollowing:
• Engageactivelywithyourclassmates:Shareresources,commenton
other’sposts,anddeveloprelationshipsexternaltoourclass.
• CheckD2Landemail(atleast)daily.Thisisafour-weekcourse,so
we’llbemovingquickly.Whileyouwillnothaveformalassignments
everyday,therewillbedailyupdatesandongoingdiscussions,and
it’llbeimportantforyoutokeepup!
DeadlinesandExtensions
I'mprettyflexiblewithdeadlines(althoughI’llneedtobesomewhatless
flexibleinacompressed,four-weekcourse!),andI’mwillingtogrant
extensionsifyouhaveagoodreason.Buttobeeligibleforanextension,
youmustcontactmebeforetheassignmentisdue.Atthattime,wewill
agreeonanewdeadlinefortheassignmentandyouwillneedtomeet
thatdeadlinetoreceivefullcredit.
Otherwise,ifyourassignmentislateIwillloweryourgradebyathirdof
agradeforeachdaythatyourassignmentislate,includingweekends.
