The v e l o c i t i e s V1 and V2 were chosen f o r each spread by i n s p e c t i o n of d a t a from s h o t s which f e l l w i t h i n t h e spread. A straight line f i t t o arri- v a l times near the s h o t gave a "best" e s t i m a t e of V I' t h e s l o p e of the l i n e thru"more d i s t a n t phones gave a v e l o c i t y assigned t o t h e h a l f space. Inspection of t h e i n t e r c e p t s i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e e l e v a t i o n of t h e t o p of t h e a s s t q e d f i r s t l a y e r can be s a f e l y assumed t o be below the datum.
