A new local record
South Lyon U12 travel team hits high mark
By John Mueller

Unexpected late-season runs
often take people by surprise.
Which is why there was so
much chaos — the good kind of
chaos — back in July for parents
and fans of the South Lyon Lions
12-and-under travel baseball team.
“None of us planned for this to
happen,” South Lyon assistant
coach David Powers said.
“To have that huge of a leap
from last season, it was just fantastic.”
The Lions, after finishing in
second place in their division this
summer, qualified for the United
States
Specialty
Sports
Association (USSSA) World
Series, which took place July 1623 at Battle Creek’s Bailey Park
and drew hundreds of top-level
teams from a total of 26 states.
In qualifying for this talentpacked tournament, the Lions
earned the distinction of making it
further than any other travel baseball team in South Lyon history.
As a result of this terrific — and
unexpected — run, many of the
Lions’ parents found themselves
scrambling to make it out to Battle
Creek during the week of the tournament because they were either
busy with work or were already on
a planned vacation, having never
dreamed the team would advance
that far.
“While the kids stayed there the
whole time, everybody else kept
going back and forth,” Powers
said with a laugh.
South Lyon head coach Bill
Heidt said once it became apparent his team was going to be playing in Battle Creek, he quickly
came up with a team goal.
“We said going in that we wanted to win a couple of games,” he
said.
And the Lions, who had already
made South Lyon history by making it that far, did just that. They
won twice, beating a team from
Medina, Ohio, by a score of 15-2
and also topping a team from

Maplewood, Minn., by a score of
10-6.
“It was a great time,” Heidt said.
The Lions came up on the losing side in three games, falling to
a Troy team (16-5), an Illinois
team (7-0) and another Illinois
team (9-5).
The 2-3 record earned the Lions
a second-place finish in the tournament’s consolation bracket for
their age group.
“South Lyon is such a football
city, and this is such a breath of
fresh air,” Powers said.
Jim Green, Steve DeWitt and
Ken Spratke were the team’s other
assistant coaches.
Roster-wise, the 2006 Lions
consisted of the following players:
Dakota Heidt, Patrick Powers,
William Martin, Colin Tittle,
Joshua Green, Cody Smith, Ryan
Nelson, Ryan Ferguson, Justin
Blair, Steven DeWitt and Kyle
Spratke.

Hockey program
holding tryouts
The South Lyon JV/Prep
Hockey program has proven to be a
very successful feeder program.
From its inception in the spring of
2004 the program has started out as
a Tier 2 team but has proved to the
Southeast Michigan Prep Hockey
League that its players could provide a very competitive program by
finishing at the top in the Tier II
division in the 2004-2005 season.
The following year the South
Lyon JV/Prep hockey team worked
its way up into the Tier 1 division
and finished the 2005-2006 season
with an impressive record of 22-33. This placed the team second
overall out of 30 teams in the SEMPHL for the regular season.
Like most teams, the players had
opportunities to make the varsity
program.
With the great success under
coach Marty Goldman, our local
players graduated 50 percent of the
