Executive Summary
A needs assessment for the University of Nevada Academy for the
Environment (UNAE) was conducted via a Web Survey between March 18, 2008
and April 30, 2008. There were a total of 648 valid email addresses on the
targeted list sample of UNAE clients provided by UNAE (sampling frame
contained 697 names and addresses targeting current clients and prospective
clients of UNAE), of which 636 were successfully sent. A total of 104
respondents completed the survey during the six-week study period,
representing a response rate of 16.4%. Almost three-fourths of the respondents
were affiliated with UNR, while approximately the other quarter of respondents
was affiliated with either the Desert Research Institute or another organization.
With respect to the seven mission objectives of the UNAE, interdisciplinary
connections and courses was seen as most important. The next highest mean
rank was given to supporting the development of interdisciplinary undergraduate
and graduate degree programs, followed respectively by enhancing research and
scholarship opportunities for environmental faculty, conducting public outreach
activities, linking science and engineering programs with the arts and humanities,
promoting environmental programs within the university, and raising
environmental awareness on campus.
Respondents were overwhelmingly supportive of all of the UNAE
educational activities, although they were less consistent in their desire to
participate in these personally. The greatest interest was in interdisciplinary
seminars with an overwhelming 92.3% of respondents expressing support.
ii
Respondents were less interested in the development of recruiting materials
promoting environmental programs; however 78.7% of respondents were still in
support of this activity.
In general, there were very high levels of awareness of the activities in
educational activities and off-campus outreach, and very few respondents
indicated that they were opposed to the UNAE’s participation in them. An
exception was in the area of some specific on-campus outreach activities, some
of which were unfamiliar to a large minority of respondents, and a few of which
produced some measurable opposition. A large number of respondents were
unfamiliar with the UNR Energy and Climate Committee, the American Colleges
and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment, and public events. In
addition, there were also instances in which a meaningful percentage of
respondents actively opposed the UNAE’s on-campus participation in campus
sustainability projects and support for student organizations.
With respect to UNR Community “In-Reach”, the cross-disciplinary
activities respondents would most like UNAE to offer were: workshops, seminars,
or mini-conferences organized around a guest speaker or topic, followed by offcampus field trips, and topically-oriented brown bag discussions. There was less
interest in regular informal off-campus gatherings, a film series, and workshops
to address specific challenges in teaching or research.
Respondents were less familiar with some of the UNAE research
activities, which resulted in more variability in their support for them. The greatest
interest in terms of research activities was for the mini-grant program, with an
iii
overwhelming 86.2% of respondents supporting it, and 43.1% saying they also
were interested in participating.
Respondents were asked to rate up to three activities that they thought
should be the top priorities for UNAE to focus its resources on in the future. The
most commonly chosen options were interdisciplinary project support (52.9%),
graduate student support (45.2%), and the undergraduate major in environmental
studies (40.4%). Respondents also indicated that the best method of
communication to disseminate information about UNAE’s future activities and
events is via an email newsletter.
iv
Academy for the Environment Needs Assessment Survey 2008
A web-based needs assessment survey regarding the University of
Nevada Academy for the Environment (UNAE) was conducted in order to help
set objectives and guide resource allocation in the future. Responses were
solicited from all individuals on the UNAE targeted mailing list. The survey was
open for responses from March 18th, 2008 to April 30th, 2008. The complete
survey instrument can be found in Appendix A. Full responses to open-ended
items are presented in Appendix D. Graphs containing responses to each survey
item are presented within the text of the report and in Appendix E.
Method and Sample
An invitation was sent by e-mail to all individuals with valid e-mail
addresses on the UNAE mailing list on March 18, 2008. Respondents were given
until March 31, 2008 to respond to the initial request. The first reminder email
was sent out on March 31, 2008 (see Appendix B), and a final reminder was sent
on April 17, 2008, giving participants until April 28, 2008 to complete the survey
(see Appendix C). The official closure of the survey was April 30, 2008. There
were a total of 648 valid email addresses on the targeted list sample of UNAE
clients provided by UNAE (original sampling frame contained 697 names and
addresses), of which 636 were successfully sent. A total of 104 respondents
completed the survey during the six-week study period, representing a response
rate of 16.4%.

Respondent Characteristics
Most of the survey respondents were affiliated with UNR (71%), while 14%
were affiliated with the Desert Research Institute (DRI), and 12% listed another
affiliation (see Figure 1 and Appendix D, open-ended responses to “other”, Q12).

Within these institutions, a wide variety of departments and programs
were represented, across the sciences and humanities. Permanent academic
faculty made up the largest group of respondents (47%) by a wide margin. The
next largest group was those describing their position as “other” (27%), which
comprised several undergraduate students and community members (see Figure
2 and Appendix D, Q14). Graduate students made up 9% of respondents. Almost
all respondents (93.2%) said that an e-mail newsletter was the best way for
UNAE to communicate with them.

Support for and Interest in Activities
The survey instrument asked respondents to indicate their level of support
for a variety of UNAE activities in the areas of education, research, on-campus
outreach, and off-campus outreach. In general, there were very high levels of
awareness of the activities in most of these areas, and very few respondents
indicated that they were opposed to the UNAE’s participation in them. The
exception was in the area of on-campus outreach activities, some of which were
unfamiliar to a large minority of respondents, and a few of which produced some

Respondents were overwhelmingly supportive of all of the UNAE
educational activities, although they were less consistent in their desire to
participate in these personally (see Figure 9). The greatest interest was in
Interdisciplinary seminars; 92% of respondents supported the UNAE’s role in
these seminars, and 57% also were interested in participating. Respondents
were least interested in the development of recruiting materials promoting
environmental programs, however there were still 78% of respondents in support
of this activity, while 28% were interested in participating personally.

Support was high across the board for UNAE off-campus community
outreach and awareness activities (see Figure 12). All of the activities in this
category were supported by more than 80% of respondents. The greatest
interest was in conference organization, which was supported by 94% of
respondents, while 37% also were interested in participating. Closely following
that activity was public awareness events (92%). People were least supportive of
participation in national networks of communities working toward sustainable
practices and providing leadership at the community level. However, both of
these activites were still supported by 84% of respondents.

(53%), graduate student support (45%), and the undergraduate major in
environmental studies (40%). The lowest-ranked priorities were special events
(16%), the Tahoe science consortium (17%), and seminar support (17%). An
email newsletter is the best method of communication for future UNAE activities
and events (see Appendix G).

Academy for the Environment Needs Assessment
Introduction: The Academy for the Environment (UNAE) was established in 2004
as an interdisciplinary institute at the University of Nevada, Reno, with the
mission to develop, enhance and coordinate environmental teaching, research
and service at the University of Nevada, Reno. As part of its 3rd-year self-study
review, the Academy is interested in knowing which of these programs or
services are of most interest to you. And, as we look forward to setting our future
goals and directions, we wish to understand the environmental values and
priorities of the UNR environmental community. Whether or not you have actually
used UNAE’s services or programs, please answer the following questions. It will
only take about 10-15 minutes of your time. Your opinion is very important to us.
Thank you in advance for your participation.

Appendix D: Open-Ended Responses
Item Q2: If you have any comments/suggestions regarding UNAE OBJECTIVES
AND PRIORITIES, please list them in the space provided:
ALL of the above objectives are important. How about volunteer projects
for non-environmental as well as environmental related majors to
raise the awareness of UNAE?
As a medical school faculty member with an interest in "wilderness
medicine" I would like to see some collaboration and program
development that included the medical school.
Causing students at UNR to be aware that their university is committed to
environmental issues and promoting a general feeling of green is
very important both to our students and to the public.
Educate faculty and students about campus focused environmental
issues.
Explore graduate study possibilities within the academy.
Far too many of these programs are "soft" in the sciences. Please work to
make sure your graduates have a solid understanding of ecological
and environmental sciences.
Given the size of the staff and the resources available, it seems important
to concentrate on at most 3 priorities.
How many of us, even knowing the dangers to our environment, try even a
bit to reduce the pressure on our environment? Not even our own
conservationists. Our main aim should be to train such students
who really want to do something for the environment, our Mother
Earth. I strongly believe that first of all, we ought to increase
awareness among the people to save our environment. We must
assure them that without sincere efforts on our part, our Mother
Earth would soon become a polluted and unwanted land. Maybe,
that is the reason why the scientists are searching for new places to
live on. Then only we should think about other important decisions,
because until we feel that we are a part and parcel of our
environment and we don’t have any right to interfere with it, till then
the studies and degrees will be of no use to us. Please visit:
globalreality.multiply.com and do suggest me regarding that at:
[email protected]
I'd like to see recycling bins on every floor in every building. I saw some
really neat recycle containers at the LA airport.
I think the Academy has done a very good job with the first phase of its
work. I hope it will remain open to activism as well as scholarship,
and that it will help to build the ES program at the graduate level.
I think the program is doing pretty good. I haven't been that involved this
semester however, based on last semesters experience, I was
happy with the program and the environmental studies class I had
taken.
24
I would really like to see an environmental sociology course at UNR.
In addition to raising awareness, the program should encourage
ACTIVISM where value judgments are made and people take a
stand. All the awareness in the world doesn't mean crap if
somebody doesn't stand up and say x is complete and utter bullshit.
An example of this would be the coal issue. If the program and its
faculty are afraid to take a stand because of fear of being sued or
some other type of recrimination, the entire point of creating a
program based on environmental awareness will be negated if the
students of the program are not taught to stand for their
convictions. If the program does not make activism with
convictions as part of its explicit and implicit goals, I would suggest
changing the program name to Department of the Unconvicted w/o
Much Backbone (DUMB). Conviction without action is conviction
without meaning or substance.
In the Fine Arts, we must not be forgotten! We have some good ideas, but
the funding climate within the Federal Government and throughout
the sciences does not fully value the visual image. Can we work
together on that?
Include DRI in the "develop innovative courses and provide cross-college
connections between various departments and disciplines related
to the environment". DRI has a lot to offer the Academy.
Just to communicate as often as you can about courses, events, and
panel discussions that are going on. Also, perhaps we could
articulate more with USAC to see about how study abroad
programs could embrace environmental issues more so we can get
a more global and comparative perspective on the environment.
More effort has to be made in promoting interdisciplinary proposals among
hard science groups that have significant implications for
interdisciplinary environmental research.
Perhaps develop joint environmental policy/engineering/planning speaker
seminars across multiple departments.
Start at Home first by helping raise environmental awareness on campus.
then community. then develop more programs.
Students need exposure to current resource issues. Help us develop
accredited opportunities for them by supporting field courses and
internship programs.
The enhancement of research for faculty should also include students.
The biggest drawback to developing interdisciplinary course and programs
from my perspective is that there is no funding for faculty who want
to do this, and no incentive for my department to allow a faculty
member time to develop a course that does not meet current dept.
requirements or goals.
The UNAE should serve as a way to develop and attract research funding
and faculty activity on research, education, and private-public
25
partnerships that foster environmental protection, awareness, and
technology to promote both.
The whole thing is a waste of time and resources. There are already
departments on campus that deal with environmental and natural
resource issues with stakeholders and constituents, using both
research, teaching, and outreach. Vital resources are being
diverted from real world issues into an academic exercise that does
nothing for the resource base. It is time someone woke up and
smelled the coffee.
These choices overlap, sometimes considerably. I support them all. So
my ordering above is a bit arbitrary.
to set the priorities, UNAE should start more research and scholarship
programmes for international students which would ultimately help
in more innovative ideas and meaningful work.
Very difficult to rank these because they are all very extremely important.
Item Q5: If you have any comments/suggestions about how UNAE can best
support interdisciplinary environmental EDUCATION, please list them in the
space provided:
By starting new courses like environmental management - solid waste
management, water treatment , e-waste management ,hazardous
waste management etc
Connect with programs that could provide mutually beneficial results like
the Child and Family Research Center - could not only involve the
youngest students, but college age practicum students and Parents
(can be faculty, students or community.)
I like the idea of an undergraduate major in environmental science, and
using this as a double major option. However, I don't think UNAE
should be any more involved in undergraduate education than this.
I think it is important that new courses aren't a priority. I think it would be
better to take existing classes and combine them into programs
where there is different types of non-standard combinations of
classes, so that you create students who graduate from the
program have a broad mix but enough focused stuff to where they
more or less could have minors in Biology, English, Chemistry,
Wildlife Ecology, Math, APST, Political Science, Journalism,
whatever it is they want to combine. That would be more useful for
those who want to go to grad school.
KEY here is: In ALL depts. across ALL colleges...
Leave it to the departments and colleges that are already doing the work.
More work needs to be done to integrate environmental education into
traditional non-environmental curriculum to address sustainability
aspects related to the field of study.
26
My interest in environmental education comes from a ecology theology
perspective. I am a Georgia resident who comes to Reno with my
husband who is working on an advance degree in judicial science.
Raise awareness not only about the various programs but also inform
students about the growing job market for graduates of
environmental/cross-disciplinary studies.
The listserve would be useful in promoting interdisciplinary courses and
activities.
Item Q7: If you have any comments/suggestions about ways that UNAE can best
support interdisciplinary environmental RESEARCH for the UNR faculty and
student community, please list them in the space provided:
I am not on campus, which is why I keep checking the dot indicating
anticipated lack of direct involvement.
Applied = much more useful. The more, the better
I really like the implications for the Roadside Heritage Project, but there is
not very much awareness out there.
While I support involvement with the Walker Basin Project, I have the
sense that this project has highjacked UNAE, interfering with its
other missions. This created a bad start for UNAE regarding its
campus involvement.
Why limit yourselves to local environmental issues? I know that Tahoe
has a lot going on, as does Walker, but there are many other
programs and issues in the western US that could draw more
researchers and graduate stud
Item Q9: If you have any comments/suggestions regarding UNAE OUTREACH
(including on-campus initiatives, off-campus initiatives, and UNR in-reach),
please list them in the space provided:
Definitely more topic discussions.
I am also interested in a film series/discussions but you're only allowing us
3 choices in question #11!
Many faculty are already involved in most of these issues and activities,
we need no redundancy. UNAE is an expensive redundancy.
