The 7 Stages of Grieving Louise Herron AM
Chief Executive Officer
Sydney Opera House
To live and work successfully, today’s students
need to be creative and collaborative. The
Sydney Opera House was created through
these qualities and our aim is to foster them
in the next generation.
In 2017, the Opera House’s Creative Learning
team will focus on three key areas:
Engaging students on site with performances
to inspire their young minds;
Taking the Opera House into classrooms and
homes around Australia through our digital
program; and
Helping schools better integrate creative
teaching in their classrooms through our
Creative Leadership in Learning program.
Led by school principals, this program
supports teachers and students in taking
an innovative approach to learning.
We are also building a new Creative Learning
Centre as part of the Opera House’s $250
million Stage 1 Renewal program, supported
by the NSW Government. Scheduled for
completion in 2018, the centre will host a yearround program of events to immerse children
in creative experiences.
At the Opera House, we aim to inspire, and
strengthen the community, through everything
we do. One of the best ways to achieve this
is by working with schools and teachers to
nurture the young people who will shape that
community’s future.
We look forward to welcoming you on site or
online in 2017.

Bridgette Van Leuven
Head of Children,
Families & Creative Learning
The Children, Families & Creative Learning
team worked to four key values when
programming our 2017 Creative Learning
season. These words – Challenge, Participate,
Play and Create – inform everything we do and
how we intend to do it. We want to challenge
our audiences and ourselves; encourage
participation in art and with the Opera House;
play and create joyfully, collaboratively
and innovatively.
Putting this year’s program together has been
rewarding, particularly because it’s one of
our most diverse yet. You’ll find extraordinary
artists with modern interpretations of great
classics, inspiring Indigenous stories and
contemporary dance. We invite you to
celebrate the reign of a new king, join a
breakdance crew and take a profound walk
through Indigenous history.

In this one-everywoman show, Chenoa Deemal (Mother Courage and Her
Children) spins poignant stories of different people, from different mobs –
tear-streaked tales of tragedy go hand-in-hand with jubilant celebrations of
simple survival.
Funny, devastatingly sad, politically relevant and culturally profound as it
traverses the phases of Aboriginal history, The 7 Stages of Grieving is an invitation
to face hard truths, to join hands and grieve.
It shares true and personal stories that need to keep being told. And perhaps
most importantly, it opens a dialogue about the issues that separate and unite
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Contains infrequent use of coarse language.

Bangarra is assisted by the Australian Government
through the Australia Council for the Arts and the
NSW Government through Arts NSW.
In a tumultuous time of Australia’s history, Woollarawarre Bennelong (a senior
man of the Eora from the Port Jackson area in Sydney) and his community left
us with a legacy that transcended ‘first contact’. Inspired by true events, this
theatrical dance work highlights the extraordinary curiosity and diplomacy that
led an Aboriginal community to survive a clash of cultures; contributing to the
establishment of positive relationships between the Eora and the British.
Featuring a unique Australian dance language and some of the country’s most
acclaimed dancers, Bangarra Dance Theatre celebrates the continuation of
life and culture through the power, artistry, passion and physicality of dance.
Students will love this brand new contemporary dance work that will leave them
in awe of Australia’s history, choreographed by Artistic Director Stephen Page.

Take your secondary students on an extraordinary and inspiring adventure into
Jess Thom’s weird and wonderful world. Jess has Tourettes; a condition that
makes her say ‘biscuit’ 16,000 times a day. Her unusual neurology gives her a
unique perspective on life, and she’s about to unleash it on the world.
Fusing comedy, puppetry, singing, and incredible tics to explore spontaneity,
creativity and disability, this show is full of things you never knew would make
you laugh. Jess is neurologically incapable of staying on script, and that’s when
the fun begins.
Contains adult themes and frequent strong course language. Recommended
for 16+.

Schools of the Future Conference
Enhance creative teaching within your school with your own
Tailor-made Teacher Professional Learning program. Your
unique program that will cover the developmental areas that
matter to you most. Examples include but are not limited to:
cross-curriculum learning, project-based learning, teaching
creatively, team building, and drama or art-based approaches
to maths, science, history and English.
The Schools of the Future Conference is a two day conference
that inspires schools to design innovative educational projects
that respond to the challenges of our changing world. Come as
a group ready to explore and spark change.
The challenges the education sector face are well known;
international studies and local stories articulate this almost daily.
Rather than dwell on the problems, the Schools of the Future
Conference is a practical problem-solving think tank bringing
together creative people from both inside and outside the
education sector.
We can cater to groups of most sizes and durations (half day,
full day, catering – you choose!). Where better to inspire your
school than in the unique surrounds of the Opera House?
Contact us to discuss your ideas.
The conference is curated by a panel of education experts and
has been designed to involve participants actively in two days of
hands-on learning. Interrogate, discuss and unpack your ideas
with the support of peers and industry experts from the finance,
design, trades, arts, government and other sectors.
Capacity strictly limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
