Champions... (from left) Chong Wei Guan, Tia Louise Rozario, Cherlin Sia Jia Yi and Raeshon
Loo Wei Ming.
The Track and Field Academy sent 16 student-athletes to compete at the 5th
Bukit Jalil Sports School International Combined Events Championships and we
achieved our best results with every student-athlete returning home with a medal.
Competing in four categories – U13 Boys and Girls Pentathlon and U14 Boys and
Girls Hexathlon – we clinched the Overall Champion title in each category.
Raeshon Loo Wei Ming won the U13 Boys Pentathlon and Cherlin Sia Jia Yi took
top honours in the U13 Girls category for the same event. Chong Wei Guan, who
finished 5th in the U13 Pentathlon in 2013, won the gold medal in the U14 Boys
Hexathlon. Tia Louise Rozario made it two in a row as she added the U14 Girls
Hexathlon title to her 2013 U13 Girls Pentathlon crown.
Our teams also finished in top 3 positions in all four categories.
Our U14 Girls team comprising Tia, Ismi Zakiah Kashful Anwar, Jezebel Koh Xin
Yun and Portia Tan Tying won convincingly, 560 points ahead of Bukit Jalil Sports
School. The U13 Girls and U14 Boys teams finished 2nd, while the U13 Boys team
was 3rd.
Our student-athletes also pushed themselves to the limit in the medley relays
which consist of 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m sprints. Both the U13 and U14
teams finished 3rd.
The competition served as a very good platform for us to assess our Long-Term
Athlete Development multi-event training programme for our Lower Secondary
student-athletes. After two days of back-to-back competition on 15 and 16
November 2014, it was obvious that our student-athletes understand how
physically demanding and mentally challenging a combined event can be,
especially since they have to re-focus after very event and deal with success and
failure.

Singapore Sports School student-athletes received a total of 92 National Colours
Awards and 163 Zone Awards. The Sports School also won 40 Team Awards,
presented to teams that finished in the top 4 of the national round of competition.
Shooter Martina Lindsay P Veloso capped off an excellent year when she was
named Singapore Schools Sports Council’s Overall Best School Girl. At 14, she
became the youngest medallist in the 27-year history of the ISSF World Cup – and
Singapore’s only medallist in the competition – when she won the Women’s 10m
Air Rifle gold medal in Munich, Germany, in June. She also won the silver medal in
the same event at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. At the National
Schools Games shooting competition, Martina won the gold medal in the “B”
Division Girls’ 10m Air Rifle event and led the Singapore Sports School “B” Division
Girls’ 10m Air Rifle team to the title in a new Championship record.
Bowler Darren Ong Wei Siong is Singapore Schools Sports Council’s Best School
Boy for Tenpin Bowling for the third successive year, the first Singapore Sports
School student-athlete with such an achievement. Darren represented the
Singapore Schools at the 15th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships in
February 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and was the team’s sole representative in the
Boys’ Masters Final where he finished 10th – but with an impressive average of
244 over 16 games. He was also selected by Singapore Bowling Federation to
compete at the 2014 World Youth Championships in Hongkong, China, in August.
Table Tennis player Yee Herng Hwee was named Best School Girl for Table Tennis.
Herng Hwee was part of the Singapore Women’s Table Tennis team that won the
bronze medal at the 2014 World Table Tennis Championships. She also competed
at the Nanjing 2014 YOG.
Sprinter Kugapriya d/o Chandran, who competed at the Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games as part of the all-Singapore Sports School national
women’s 4x100m relay team, was named Best School Girl for Track and Field.
Diver Fong Kay Yian was presented with the Special Award.

NTU Sports Awards 2014

Amanda Lim (left) and Calvin Kang (right) with Guest-of-Honour Chan Kwong Lok, NTU Chief
Planning Officer/Registrar.
Swimmer Amanda Lim Xiang Qi and sprinter Calvin Kang Li Loong took the top
honours at the NTU Sports Awards 2014, 29 October 2014, when they were
named NTU Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year 2014.
Calvin became the first Singapore Sports School alumnus to be named NTU
Sportsman of The Year. In 2013, the sprinter took a year off from university to
train full-time with members of the national men’s 4x100m relay team in a bid to
lower their national mark to qualify for the 2013 World Championships in
Moscow, Russia, and to win gold at the Nay Pyi Taw 2013 Southeast Asian Games.
While the team did not qualify for the World Championships, they finished with a
silver medal at the Sea Games in December 2013.
That gap year proved beneficial to Calvin.
“That one year away taught me a lot about myself. Prior to the gap year, I was
struggling to balance my sport and studies. I had the mentality of a bull – charging
through my day, rushing through lectures, tutorials and even my trainings, with
the mentality of wanting to maximise each day. I missed many interaction
opportunities with people along the way as I was solely focused on doing things
on my own. I started to lose my bearings a little and my motivation level dropped.
“The gap year allowed me to re-think my priorities and re-adjust my focus. I used
to place ‘effort versus results’ expectations on myself when it came to sport and
studies. I was set for a burn out when I didn’t do well, as a result of this mentality.
“My coach once told me that ‘you are only young once; don’t waste away your
youth. Don’t just chase your dreams alone, go run it together’. This brought me to
understand that in reaching my dreams, it wasn’t just about clocking the quick
split times, or outrunning my competitors. But it was about the process of
building myself up through sports, with people that matter, and with people that
were there alongside me.
“Through this journey, I have learnt that you can never make it alone. I am
extremely thankful for the opportunities and support of NTU, especially the
Sports Science and Management fraternity of lecturers, administrative support
team and my course mates. Imagine my lecturer talking to me about my sport
more, instead of what was just covered in class. Such small conversations make
my day and felt good that they followed my sporting career and cared,” said
Calvin.
Calvin first represented Team Singapore at the Nakhon Ratchasima 2007 Sea
Games. He went on to compete at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Guangzhou
2010 Asian Games and Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games – all before he turned
21. He won a hat-trick of silver medals in the 4x100m Relay at the Vientiane 2009,
Jakarta 2011 and Nay Pyi Taw 2013 Sea Games. This year, he competed at the
Incheon 2014 Asian Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Despite his achievements, this award came as a surprise to Calvin.
“My target was to lower my personal best this year, especially with major
competitions like the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, which served as
extra motivation to me. I was focused on the training process and eventually, I
finished the year with the fastest time in the 100m in Singapore. Achieving my
goal was a great feeling and to top it off, I was named NTU Sportsman of The Year.
I am proud to be the first Sports School alumnus to win this award and I hope it
will inspire my juniors to emulate my achievements”, said Calvin.
Amanda Lim was named NTU Sportswoman of The Year 2014, becoming the fifth
Singapore Sports School alumnus in succession to receive this award after sailor
Jovina Choo Bei Fen (2010), hurdler Dipna Lim Prasad (2011), sailor Victoria Chan
Jing Hua (2012) and bowler Bernice Lim Hui Ying (2013).
Amanda competed at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games and Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games, and won three gold and one silver medal at the Nay Pyi
Taw 2013 Southeast Asian Games.
Singapore Sports School alumni Pang Sheng Jun and Yvonne Lin Cuiwen received
the NTU Sports Grants, which are awarded to athletes who have made
outstanding contribution in the promotion of University sports and whose
performances bring credit to the University and the nation.
Hurdler Dipna Lim Prasad was presented the Full Colours Award.

Fencer Amita Berthier and golfer Charles Benjamin Alliston received the Eurasian
Community Fund Education Awards 2014 (Distinction Award), while track and
field athlete Tia Louise Rozario was presented the Merit Award (Secondary School)
on 6 September 2014.
Amita received “The Harry Elias Award for The Outstanding Eurasian Sports
Student 2013”, and Charles was presented with “The Fredric Fox Award for the
Meritorious Eurasian Sports Student 2013”.
Amita’s personal statement that accompanied her application said: “When I
started competitive fencing, it was difficult to focus on two different things –
sports and studies – but I am used to it now. When it is time to study, I seriously
buckle down and focus on studying and I don't think about sports. Only when it is
time to train and compete do I shift my focus. I am really thankful for what I have
and grateful to my parents and Singapore Sports School for shaping me into who I
am today.”
Charles said 18 months ago, he did not have a handicap index but only a dream.
He has since won the National Schools Championship and HSBC Junior
tournament. He has worked really hard for it, starting the day at 6 am to play golf.
“Whether it’s sports or studies, my parents always encourage me to give my best
in all that I do. And I would like to encourage others to do the same: Follow your
dreams with your heart and hard work, realise your potential to the best of your
ability. Above all, share your journey along the way with the people who care
most about you and who you care for.”

Shanti – First Singaporean Woman To Go Under 24s In 200m
16th Asian Junior Athletics Championship
Posted: 1 July 2014
Singapore Sports School alumnus Veronica Shanti Pereira set a new national
200m record after clocking a time of 23.99s in the Women’s 200m Final at the
16th Asian Junior Athletics Championship on 15 June 2014. She finished second,
behind India’s Dutee Chand, who clinched gold in 23.74s. Nigina Sharipova of
Uzbekistan won the bronze medal in 24.24s.
“I did not expect to break the record because this is only my first overseas
competition for the year. However, Coach Margaret Oh, has prepared me well
over the last few months and the high level of competition here also gave me the
push to go under the national record,” said Shanti, who had also won the bronze
medal in the Women’s 100m event.
She had lowered her own previous mark of 24.12s set at the Nay Pyi Taw 2013
Southeast Asian Games in December. Shanti is the first Singaporean woman to go
under 24s in the 200m.
Dylan Vaults To New Heights
Taiwan Nantou Indoor Pole Vault Championships 2014

Dylan Huan Jun Kai scaled new heights when he cleared 4.38m to beat his
personal best achievement by 18cm at the Taiwan Nantou Indoor Pole Vault
Championships on 26 March 2014.
Competing in the “B” category for high school athletes, Dylan cleared 3.78m,
3.98m and 4.18m in one attempt before eclipsing his personal best of 4.20m with
a height of 4.38m on his third attempt. His confidence grew after achieving the
personal milestone and he attempted to clear 4.58m. While his first and third
attempts were close, he eventually finished with a height of 4.38m, which was
good enough for him to be placed 6th among 41 international competitors.
“Right from the start, Dylan was very focused. It was his first indoor pole vault
competition and he prepared by studying the techniques of international pole
vaulters like world indoor record holder Renaud Lavilenie. That reflected in his
performance as he cleared his first three heights in one attempt. After achieving a
new personal best, he wanted to go even higher. While he failed in his attempt to
clear 4.58m, I believe it is only a matter of time before he achieves it. He has a
strong training ethic, a competitive streak and a desire to succeed. My goal for
Dylan this year is to clear 4.50m and hopefully, that will be good enough to qualify
for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games,” said Track and Field Academy Head
Coach Ralf Iwan.
Brian Ho Ren Jie and Joel Ho Chi Ken also competed at the Championships, which
was their first overseas competition. Brian, whose personal best was 3.80m,
cleared 3.58m and 3.78m in one attempt but was unable to clear 3.98m. Joel did
not register a height after he failed to clear 3.78m.
“It was a good experience for our pole vaulters. Competing against a pool of
international athletes, they picked up tips on how their competitors prepare and
were able to soak in the atmosphere of a top-class competition,” said Head Coach
Iwan.

The "B" Division Girls and Boys 4x400m Relay Team
Singapore Sports School's "B" Division Boys and Girls teams turned on the style
when it mattered the most, clinching their first- ever title double. They won seven
out of 10 events they competed on the final day of the 55th National Schools
Track and Field Championships at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, including a clean
sweep of the "B" Division 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
While the "B" Division Boys team, the defending champions, led Hwa Chong
Institution by 48 points going into the final day on 16 April 2014, the "B" Division
Girls team (87 points) trailed traditional powerhouses Nanyang Girls High School
(92 points) and Cedar Girls School (88 points).
Leading the Sports School Girls team's challenge were sprinters Nur Izlyn Zaini and
Kugapriya d/o Chandran. Izlyn, who had earlier set a Championship Record in the
Girls 100m Hurdles (14.65s), retained her 100m crown in 12.61s, edging out
Kugapriya (12.75s). Anatasia Lim Lin Lee (13.42s) made it a Sports School 1-2-3 in
the event for the second successive year. Later, Izlyn teamed up with Kugapriya,
Nurul Syarah Razali and Sarah Nadia Aidil Tamzil to win the 4x100m Relay gold.
Kugapriya, who broke Sports School alumnus Eugenia Tan Yan Ning's record in the
200m Final, anchored the 4x400m Relay team to gold, and in the process, repeat
her 2013 medal tally of 3 golds and 1 silver.
It was another Sports School 1-2-3 in the "B" Division Girls 800m with Addeen
Idzni Imran, Celeste Goh Jia Rui and Grace Ng En Hui winning crucial points for the
team before the relay teams consolidated the Girls team's grip on the
Championship title. The “B” Division Girls team eventually finished on 150 points,
ahead of Nanyang Girls High School (119 points) and Cedar Girls School (101
points).
Muhammad Syazani Abdul Wahid brushed aside the disappointment of missing
out on the “B” Division Boys 100m gold medal by 0.01s to anchor the 4x100m
Relay team to victory. Syazani had also won the 200m gold medal. The 4x400m
Relay team’s win was the icing on the cake as the “B” Division Boys team
successfully defended their title, finishing on 178 points. Hwa Chong Institution
finished second on 122 points and Raffles Institution, third on 121 points.
Ismi Zakiah Kashful Anwar was the star performer of the “C” Division Girls team,
winning four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m Relays. The
team eventually finished second (133 points) behind Cedar Girls School (166
points).
The “C” Division Boys team were placed third on 92 points, behind Hwa Chong
Institution (156 points) and Raffles Institution (135 points).
Team Sports School fielded 72 competitors in 124 events and won a total of 58
medals – 28 golds, 16 silvers and 14 bronzes. The student-athletes also
established 5 Championship Records and 2 National Age-Group Records over the
nine days of competition.
Besides Nur Izlyn’s and Kugapriya’s Championship Records, Tia Louise Rozario
claimed 2 Championship Records and a National Age-Group Record. She broke the
