Respect, Resilience & Relationships
Staff News
We received news last week
that Mr. Jesse King has
received a job offer to work
for CSIRO based in
Townsville delivering
curriculum programs to
indigenous students in that
region. He and his family
depart from Katherine at the
end of Term 2. This is a
terrific career opportunity for
him and a chance to be
closer to his Queensland
family. We thank Mr King for
his outstanding contribution
to St Joseph’s over the past
7 and half years. He has
established a vision and a
commitment to ensuring we
deliver the very best
contemporary educational
practices for NT Catholic
education.
This week we welcomed new
administration officers Mrs
Tanya Zofrea and Mr
Patrick Dacaya who
commenced work in the
office last Monday. Sadly we
will be farewelling Ms Audrey
Chen at the end of next
week. Ms Chen is moving to
Melbourne after a welldeserved rest in Taiwan. We
thank Audrey for her great
contribution to St Joseph’s
over the past 2 and half
years.
Congratulations to both Mrs
Elizabeth Campbell and
Anthony Busch on the
completion of Certificate 4 in
Education Support from
Batchelor College.
Welcome back to Mr Bill
Harding who is providing
three weeks of relief support
for Mr Green. We also have

A Letter from a Visiting

Delegation last week
Good Morning Bev,
THANK YOU so much for
hosting us yesterday. We all
came away knowing we had
visited a school where true
Gospel values were evident
and very much alive. Your
staff were so welcoming
(despite the chaos we
created in Transition 1.) My
staff were very positive about
their experience at St
Joseph's, with all saying the
sense of community was
almost palpable; best
summed up by "that's the
most beautiful school I've
ever been in. I wish I lived
here so I could teach at St

member of our group. The

provides us with many qualities
which we can all emulate in our
daily living. As foster father to
Jesus, and husband to Mary, Joseph was presented with challenges; some of which we too
may experience. From what we
read in the New Testament, he
showed respect, resilience and
healthy relationships. It was fitting therefore as a college community that we gathered Tuesday
May 5th in our Parish Church to
celebrate the Feast of St Joseph
the Worker. Many thanks to parents and carers, and parishioners who joined the Eucharistic
celebration. A sincere thanks to
Father Mark who always ensures
that our College masses are welcoming and prayerful.
Sacrament Preparation
Programme
The young people who are preparing to either celebrate their
First Eucharist or Confirmation
on June 15th and their family
representative, are now almost
half way through their preparation programme. The sessions
held here at the College on
Wednesday afternoons, have
been lively and informative.
Please continue to keep all involved in your prayers.
The theme for each group was
different and reports back from
the team members, staff involved
and students themselves, reflect
the importance of providing opportunities for youth to work with
peers on topics such as Leadership, Discipleship, Life choices,
Self-image and God’s Love.
Days such as this are an integral
part of the College’s curriculum
and attendance by all students is
an expectation that was agreed
upon when enrolment was
sought at the College.

Diary Date - Athletics Carnival
2nd & 3rd June — Katherine Athletic Oval
Angus Cameron, Taleisha Taimani & Talon
Biddle were chosen to represent Katherine
at the School Sports Carnival for Rugby
League. This event was held this week on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Katherine Region tied 2nd with Alice Springs,
Parrs (Palmerton Area) were the winners
and Darwin came in 3rd.
Also congratulations to Taleisha, as she has
been selected in the squad of 30 players for
the Northern Territory and we wish her luck
to be selected when the team is announced
in a month’s time.
Melbourne Experience
On May 5th eighteen Year 11 students left Katherine to experience Melbourne and visit the Age Careers Expo, which is one
of the largest careers expos in Australia. As part of this trip, students visited Charles Darwin University, Melbourne University and RMIT in Melbourne. They sat in lecture theatres, visited practical sites on campus, toured the on campus accommodation and explored other areas of each university. At the Careers Expo students had the opportunity to engage with a
huge range of education and employment representatives and ask personally relevant questions. In addition to the academic and employment aspects of this excursion, students visited St Patrick Cathedral and learnt about its history. They
also had the opportunity to enjoy ten pin bowling, laser tag, ice skating and many other fun activities. The 2015 Melbourne
Experience was a huge success and we would like to thank the students for being so wonderful. The staff really enjoyed
their time away with them.
Health Careers Rural High School Visits
Diana Carli-Seebohm from Medicare Local Northern Territory brought a team of six medical and health students from universities around Australia to visit the senior students and talk about careers in health related fields. The students were
studying to become paramedics, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. These students worked with the
students in six small groups and rotated them around to experience different health related skills. They stitched fake cuts,
plastered fingers, looked in ears, listened to hearts, they checked reflexes, resuscitated victims and much more. The students were fully captivated throughout the visit. Students then heard about the different obstacles and opportunities involved when accessing courses, such as the cost or getting high enough ATAR scores. The visiting university students gave
excellent options for how to deal with all of these obstacles and how to access any of their fields of study. Each of the 27
students were given show bags with even more information. We look forward to meeting Diana again next year when she
will be bringing another group of talented health professionals to meet our students.
