ENTERAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION PERMITS
Due to the problems cause.d by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita the d adline for obtaining enteral conscious sedation pen nits has been extended
until June 30 2006 in order [or those licensees to have sufficient time to obtain the neces 'ary continuing education before being granted the
permit to administer enteral conscious sedation. Those dentists administering ECS at this time may continue l do so until J une 3.0, 2006 ,
lhereafter which they musl have the permit to do so.

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:
The board staff faced difficult challenges conduc ting business during the aftermath of
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. During the time the board office was inaccessible, the board
conducted business via internet and phone from Florida as of September 5, 2005. The board
office re-opened, with partial stafL for shorter hours on September 26, 2005. The board intends to
meet the needs of dental health care professionals and their patients, but can only so do within
the limits imposed by circumstances. At the time this went to the printer, the board office building
was surrounded by armed military personneL water trucks, news media and medical stations. A
curfew was in effect, and it was strictly enforced. Althoug h food was available, the choices
(hamburgers or beans and rice) were limited. In spite of the difficulties, the board office was
o e n and is operating.
The Louisiana contin uing education requirements found in Rules 1601-1619 are to be relaxed
due to the disr uptions caused by Katrina and Rita. At the time this was headed to the printer, the
board an the LDA had agreed upon the approach set forth elsewhere in this publication.
The deadline for obtaining enteral sedation permits has been postponed as set forth
elsewhere in this publication.
Three board members' terms expire on December 3 L 2005. Nominations for those seats,
occu p ied by Charle s T. McC abe, D.M.D., Charles Wise , D.D.S., and Christine Guillaume, R.D.H.,
will be submitted to the Governor as soon as circumstan ces permit. Due to the dispersal of
de n tists and hygienists from the areas represented by th em, the nomination process is being
delayed upon instructions from the Governor's office.
Finally, the board has decided to join with other states in an effo rt to develop and eventually
administer a nationally recognized clinical licensure examination for Louisiana dental
professionals , thus allowing dental healthcare professionals to move more freely across state
borders. The board believes that this is a positive development for those to be licensed by
Louisiana, and invites all interested parties to express their views on the subject.

audits. Thls is neces:Hlated by the tact that the New Orleans Dental Conferl:!nce has been cancelled for the
past two years and all the other problems associated with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
All dentists and hygieIllsts renewing their licenses at the end of ealenda. year 2006 must complete one -hall oj
thail requirements. Dentists musl obtain twenty hours of cantinuing education. Ten of those twenty hours
must he cllOical. however. live at the ten clinical hours may be obtained VlQ internet and correspondence
courses.
Hygienists must obtam twelve hours of continuing education. Six of those twelve hours must be clinical in
nature; however. three of the si.· clinical hours may be obtained via 10Iernet and correspondence courses.
Beginnmg in calendar year 2007. all continuing education tequirements must be fully met.
