Feeling At Home 4,500 Miles From Their Own
When Amie, Abigail, and Cecelia return home
to Liberia, they will have more than just their
memories of their first trip to the United States.
They will have regained the ability to walk.
who is also acting as Cecelia’s guardian while
in the United States. “They take good care of
us. I feel good living at the Ronald McDonald
House with the kids.”
The three teenagers traveled to Philadelphia
earlier this year to begin intensive physical
therapy at Shriners Hospital through a
partnership with Global Medical Relief Fund.
Amie, age 17, lost both of her legs last year
after being hit by a car. Abigail, 15, and
Cecelia, 13, each lost one leg when they were
younger after infections in their feet went to
the bone. While at Shriners, they are learning
to use their new prosthetic legs. “We are
trying to get better every day,” says Abigail.
Amie, who is staying here with her mother
Taywah, agrees. “I love everything about
the Ronald McDonald House.” she says.
She explains that the staff, especially Social
Worker Tara Duffy, are key to her positive
experience at the House. “Tara is so nice. She
welcomed us. She said, ‘If you want anything,
you come to the front desk. I will be there for
you.’ I love her. Everybody loves Tara.”
After hours of daily therapy, the girls return
to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House
at Front & Erie where they are staying for
the duration of their treatment. The House
has helped the girls and their families feel
welcome and adjust to being in an unfamiliar
place thousands of miles away from their
home in West Africa. “When we came, the
way people embraced us, we felt like this place
was our home,” says Abigail’s aunt Joanna,
Tara has also been a source of support to
Joanna. “She encourages you,” she says.
“She helps you feel relaxed and that there
is a place for every one of us here.“ Joanna
especially appreciates the little touches that
make a big difference when you are so far
from home, such as the princess-themed
party Tara coordinated for Cecelia’s 13th
birthday with the support of the Hope for
Henry Foundation. “She did a great job getting a nice cake for her, getting her gifts,”
says Joanna.“I am so thankful for her.”

Each year, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald
House welcomes families from all around the
world. So far this year, families from twelve
countries, including Liberia, have stayed at our
two Houses. Health-based non-profits such as
Global Medical Relief Fund are instrumental in
making sure international patients like Amie,
Abigail, and Cecelia get necessary medical
care, and we make sure they have a place to
stay and the support they need.
While the girls and their families have enjoyed
their time in the United States, they are of
course looking forward to returning home,
especially with their newfound ability to walk
on their own. However, they all know they
will not forget their time at the House and the
people they have met while in Philadelphia.
“I will miss Ronald McDonald House when I
go back,” says Amie.
If you would like to support families traveling
miles away from home for medical care,

to get involved.
Message from the President
Making Friends at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House
When Naomi, five, and Alina, two, wake up each morning, the first thing they do is ask for
each other. “Every single day, the first thing Alina asks is ‘Where’s Naomi?’ Are we going to
see her today?,’”says Alina’s mom Liz Bello. The two girls have quickly become the best
of friends while staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House at Chestnut Street
and are now nearly inseparable. “They don’t care what they’re doing as long as they are
together,” says Natalie Gushlaw, Naomi’s mom.
Dear Friends,
As you know, paying for the day-to-day costs of living can be a struggle. The expenses of
mortgage payments, utilities, gasoline, and so much more each month really add up. For
families staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, those bills can easily become
impossible to afford.
Marlene Weinberg, President of the Board
Two-month-old Lilly Goss at St. Christopher's
Hospital for Children.
That’s why we have our donor-supported Family Emergency Fund. Thanks to our supporters
like you, we do more than make sure families have a comfortable place to stay close to the
hospital at little to no cost. We make sure that families struggling to make ends meet as a
result of their child’s illness have the support they need when they just can’t do it anymore.
Our social workers work directly with families with the most pressing financial challenges to
help them cover non-medical expenses and maintain their households, no matter how far away
they are from home. For some, that means help with rent after a father has had to quit work
to be by his child’s side. For others, it means assistance with an emergency car repair and a
complimentary gas card so that a mother can make it home after a child is discharged. In
very sad cases, it means the payment of funeral expenses for a family already coping with
a devastating loss.
The Goss family knows all too well the difference our Family Emergency Fund can make. When
baby Lilly was just seven hours old, doctors transferred her from the hospital in Allentown to
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Born with pulmonary hypertension as well as FreemanSheldon syndrome—a rare form of the congenital disorder arthrogryposis that causes multiple
joint contractures—Lilly needed more intensive treatment than she could receive at home. For
more than two months, her parents Tempestt and Daniel, along with her older sister Willow,
have been by her side, spending their nights at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
Such a long time away from home has taken a heavy financial toll on the family, especially
because Daniel and Tempestt have not been able to return to work. Because of our donors,
the Family Emergency Fund has helped the Gosses pay their electric bill and also provided them
with assistance for other necessities such as Daniel’s medication and diapers and clothes for the
children. Tempestt and Daniel are so grateful for the support from the Fund and don’t know
what they would have done without it. “Having something like the Family Emergency Fund
Together, Naomi, who has cancer, and Alina, who has liver disease, have gone to a Phillies
game, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Adventure Aquarium, and the mall. While at the House,
they spend most of their time in each other’s bedrooms or in the playrooms. Their bond is
even more impressive considering not only their age difference but that they do not speak
the same language. While Naomi and Natalie are from upstate New York, Liz and Alina
traveled from Puerto Rico for Alina’s care.
“Alina doesn’t know English, and Naomi
doesn’t know Spanish, but they
know what each other want and they
understand each other,” explains Liz. “I
don’t know how they do it, but they do it.
It’s a beautiful thing.”
The girls’ mothers have also become
close during their stay, something that
has made a challenging time more
manageable, especially when the rest of their families remain at home. “It is easier when
you have someone to talk to, when you are not isolated,” says Natalie. Liz thinks so, too.
“The weight is not just on one person. The weight is easier when it is over a couple people,”
she says. “It is good for the girls, too, to have someone to talk to, to have a constant.”
The emotional support the families’ friendship offers is complemented by the other
services the House provides. “You have everything you need. You have a gym, you have
laundry, you have a play area for the kids. It is as convenient as it can be to not be home,”
says Natalie. “You have people here that want to make life easier for you and it’s really
nice.” Liz agrees. “It feels like home,” she says. “It just feels right.”
takes a ton of weight off of your shoulders and makes you know people care,” Tempestt says.
We hope you will return the enclosed envelope with a donation so that you can show
struggling families you care when they need it most. You can also go to www.philarmh.org
and make your gift online. We couldn’t meet the pressing needs of families like the Gosses
without you and are so thankful for your ongoing support.

Donations from the Heart, 4/1/2012–6/30/2012
Volunteer Appreciation 2012
On April 25, over 200 House volunteers gathered at The Inn at Penn for the annual
volunteer appreciation celebration. The festive evening included cocktails, dinner,
dancing, and friendly gaming as volunteers cashed in their Ronald McDonald Bucks
for chips and enjoyed the Las Vegas style atmosphere.
Thank you to The Inn at Penn and its Blue Energy Team for hosting, staffing, and
providing the delicious food for the evening's festivities. Many thanks to all of the
other donors who helped make the evening so special for our dedicated volunteers.
Our volunteers truly are the heart of the organization, serving in so many ways
to help make our Houses, Family Rooms, and Camp comfortable and supportive
places for sick children and their families. For that, we cannot thank them enough!

Children on the Cardiac and Oncology Units are often inpatient for weeks to months
at a time, and while the hospital provides food for the patients, the cost of food can
get very expensive for the caregivers. Meal donations help ease this financial burden
for families who choose not to leave their child’s side while in the hospital. We are so
thankful for all of our Guest Chef groups who help provide meals and comfort to our
families. To view a full list of all the groups and organizations that have contributed to
our Guest Chef program, and to find out how you can support our meal programs at

4th Annual Plane Pull® and tested their strength against a 74,000 pound private jet. Ronald McDonald started
off the event by getting the pullers loose and limber with his warm-up routine, and as the morning went on,
cheers from families and friends filled the tarmac. When it was all said and done, these amazing teams raised
over $67,000 to support the families staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
Thank you to the following teams for pulling for the House: Care for the Kids, Guava & Java, Marketplace
