make ends meet. This past fiscal year, we served over 8,000 people: 228 families

(436 individuals) received emergency assistance for housing, transportation or othy,

er basic needs. Another 568 families (1,542 individuals) received energy assistance;

and 307 families (519 individuals) participated in Back to School, Adopt a Family or
Gifts for Teens; and 7,352 individuals from 2,918 households shopped for clothing,
furniture, and small appliances at least once. Our dedicated staff was assisted by at least
25 daily volunteers, our Board of Directors and delegates, community service workers, faith community groups,
school groups, the support of our community and many donors. A great BIG THANK YOU to all of you who help
make WAIM the vital resource that it is in our community! We couldn’t do it without you.

It takes a community to build a Community Garden

grow the seedlings.
Then, volunteers from
all over the Windham
area come to plant at
the WAIM Community
Garden in Lauter Park
in Willimantic.
This community of helpers has evolved over 20
years of hard work, and is
now engrained in the
community. The Annie
Vinton Program showed
up in a bus this year and
planted seedlings they
had grown themselves.
Others came from
churches, area colleges,
the Master Gardener program, and concerned citizens. Important help has
come from the Department of Public Works and
the Rotary Club, and tireless volunteers like Ames
and Linda Ferbache. The
WAIM Garden Manager is
Neenah Shafer who works
with on-site Manager Bill
Treverrow to make this
miracle happen.
There are volunteers such
as Sally Millius who was a
high school teacher three
years ago and did a gardening project with students. She learned that
gardening was
what she wanted to do.
Among other things, she
writes the grants that
keep the special WAIM
garden projects going,
and can frequently found
working in the garden
itself.
Nikki Tourigney, who is
the Youth Education Coordinator, says that more
than 60 children at the
Windham Summer Camp
each week get a chance
to learn and play in the
garden. Some have never
worked in a garden before.
A young friend of WAIM,
Dylan LaBrec, volunteered and made a raised
garden bed for the Community Garden site after
several people requested
one due to difficulty in
kneeling. It is underutilized this year, but will
be an asset in the future.
In addition to the
community garden, 20
feet by 20 feet family
plots can be rented
for $20 a year.
On any day during the
growing season,
weeders and waterers can be observed.
Once harvested, all
of the produce from
the Community Garden goes to the Covenant Soup Kitchen .
There were

said. Volunteers are
always needed to
make the garden
thrive. Millius said
she knows “there is
one gardener in
every faith community,” and would
like to find them.

Interfaith Ministry (WAIM)
and Perception Programs
will host the 21st Annual
Steeple Chase Bike Tour.
With beautiful 20, 35, 50,
62.5 and 100 mile routes
that wind through 14 towns
in scenic northeastern Connecticut, the tour has a
ride for every cyclist in the
family! In addition, a NEW
family/kid-friendly 10 mile
ride for those who prefer a
shorter route has been added this year. The tour is
held rain or shine.

Partners In Independence Thrives in its 2nd Year
One thing Adrienne Marks has learned in the two years as
coordinator of the Partners In Independence Program is
that “Each (mentoring) relationship is unique.” Marks has
recently completed training new mentors, and now has 6
mentors—4 from last year, and 2 from this year. The number is small, but the difference found in a learning partner can be extremely satisfying. Although each mentor
gives a 1-year commitment, 3 of the mentors in last
year’s class have continued with their Learning Partner.
Those “teams” are having successes working on specific
goals that they’ve mapped out together, Marks said.
Learning partners are referred to the program by case
managers and are people who want to work on life goals,
such as financial, educational, or job-related. Sue Chvirko
has just completed her 5-week program training. A retired
special education teacher, she is anxious to meet her
Learning Partner. She described her new mentor relationship as one where “you are not a best friend, nor a professional.” It is a relationship that requires finesse and
respect for the Learning Partner. Chvirko said, “the bottom line is that you are helping people learn how to fish
rather than giving it to them.”
