Washington Middle School’s Presentation Guide
April 27, 2007
Dear Conference Participants,
Welcome to the 4th Annual Washington Middle School (WMS) Standards
Conference this year entitled “Huaka’i Ho’omau, A Continued Journey”. In this
year’s conference we will showcase standards-based response lessons or activities
developed and implemented by our teachers using the Responding In Overdrive staff
development model. The Responding In Overdrive staff development initiative
represents our continued journey towards excellence in delivering a standards-based
curriculum of the highest quality to our students. Although the genesis of our
response initiative lies in the Hawaii State Assessment and the low scores our students receive on
constructed response questions in both reading and math, the initiative is firmly rooted in our General
Learner Outcomes (GLO’s) and the belief that when our students leave us following their 8th grade year,
they will all exemplify the GLO’s and be healthy and confident individuals. At WMS then, response is a
“Complex Thinker” initiative that requires students to think critically and to make their thinking visible
through a clearly articulated statement.
Our journey continues to have an ambitious culminating task. All faculty members will participate in
WMS’s 4th Annual Standards Conference by sharing their experiences and insights when implementing a
response activity within a Learning In Overdrive (LIO) lesson or unit and by sharing evidence of student
learning through a live presentation or a journal article and display of student work. In addition, all
faculty members will document two response activities within their LIO lesson or unit that is kept in their
department’s Instructional Guide at the end of the school year. I would like to acknowledge the
tremendous effort and professionalism of our teachers as they have all completed the culminating task.
Please take some time to read through the 2nd volume of our professional journal “Insights” and provide
feedback to our teacher writers. I was especially impressed by the quality of the teacher’s reflection both
on our process and on their student’s work. I know that you will enjoy experiencing our continued
journey through the eyes of our teachers.
Our Keynote Speaker this year is Mr. Ryan Yamamoto a Vice President at DataHouse Consulting,
Hawaii’s largest software development company. A product of our public school system, Mr. Yamamoto
is responsible for technology strategy, product development, intellectual property strategy, channel
partnerships, and e-business projects. He will speak to the importance of the GLO’s in the workforce and
describe the characteristics of the student he would hire for his company.
I am looking forward to an exciting day of sharing and learning together. In these days of change within
our educational system, I believe that it is still the professionalism and expertise of our teachers that will
make the positive difference in the lives of our students. Thank you for your interest and participation in
our continued journey to success.
Best wishes on a successful conference,
Michael K. Harano

The person I think exemplifies a GLO is Marcia Little. She is a
Self-Directed Learner (SDL). A SDL sets priorities and
manages his/her time and resources. Marcia does an excellent
job at balancing the many activities in her life. While she has
been known to spend countless hours after school and on
weekends meeting with her team and department, she is still
able to maintain an active social life. She always makes time to
do what she loves, keeping her surroundings healthy and
impeccably tidy. A SDL also sets goals and monitors progress
through frequent evaluation. Marcia Little strives to be an
exemplary middle school teacher. I know this because she
goes to national conferences despite the unacceptable
amenities. She takes the time to share the wonderful things
she learns from these conferences. Marcia’s desire for
professional development is truly self-directed. She seeks
opportunities in the school and collaborates regularly with her
peers to get “fresh eyes” on her assessment and instruction
skills. Her students are extremely lucky to have a teacher who
really looks intensely at their work to inform her next steps!

Our presentation will illuminate our thoughts and experiences as the Counseling Department adapted what used to

document and gather information from students who are involved in or witness problems/incidents on campus. It’s
still a work in progress, and we still hear groans from students when they get to the response section, but it excites
us to be part of our response initiative.

When I think about people exemplifying the GLOs, Sue
Erickson comes to mind immediately. I can easily
describe how she models each of the GLOs, but I’m
going to pick “Complex Thinker” for this exercise. A
couple of years ago I was lucky enough to spend a lot of
time with Sue and her classes as she was pursuing her
National Board Certification. I was able to watch firsthand as she tried out lessons and adapted them from
class to class or even from student to student to meet the
different learning styles and needs in her classes. I
learned that she regularly talks with other PE teachers,
professors and athletes to gain alternate perspectives for
her teaching, in addition to spending one-on-one time
with students to ensure that they meet the standards.
But the thing that really stands out for me, is that Sue is
able to be a team player within her departments and still
maintain lessons and styles that are uniquely her own
(like basketball skills choreographed to music from “High
School Musical”).

Location: 102
This session will focus on how social studies response lessons were adapted to meet the needs of ESLL and
SPED students. We will discuss how our students responded to prompts dealing with the Bill of Rights and the new
technology of the early 19th century. We will explain how we broke down the process of response. We will share
strategies used to help our students understand the prompt. We will also share methods used to get our students
to organize the content to construct their responses. This included creating a stance and giving evidence and an
explanation to back up their stance. We believe that these strategies can also be used in regular classes as well.
We will share our successes and areas of need as well as what we see for the future.

business and new accounts, where other companies gave up.
She produced quality packages for conventions and travelers
coming from abroad to Hawaii, and locally. The travel
packages and services that she offered to companies was

Johann Strauss’s “Radetzky March”
Michael Hamm
Location: Band
A comparative analysis which can affect performance practices and the school’s response initiative regarding
Johann Strauss Sr. and Johann Strauss Jr., their life, and music. The students compare the role of music in
various cultures (e.g. where it is heard, how often it changes the value people place on it) by writing a report about
the life of the composer and his composition. They state the purpose of this composition and musical form which it
is written and (if any) historical significance. To address the schoolwide initiative, students responded to
a. Was there a rivalry or feud between Johann Strauss Sr. and his son Johann Strauss Jr.? Who was the
better musician/composer. Cite and explain.
b. What the musical significance of the “Radetzky March”? Was it only used for military parades or was it
used for other purposes? Cite and explain.
Through this research project, the performer will better understand the sociological influences upon the composer,
composition, and musical form, structure and musical nuances.

Dianah Avilla

I am currently teaching Hawaiian language and Polynesian music. I feel that this content area is very important. All
of my students are residents of Hawaii. In my curriculum, the main objective is to educate my students in our island
culture. What I hope they gain is an awareness and appreciation for Polynesia, its history, and its culture. The
students have recently completed a SEE response on the movie, “Whale Rider.” The reason we had them watch
this movie was for them to be exposed to the Maori culture.

SEEing Special Needs
Vince Bedoya
Location: 101
This unit was conducted in a Special Education seventh grade Social Studies class. The purpose was to
breakdown our school-wide response and designed to simplify the SEE process. Hopefully, at the same time make
it more visual for our special needs students. Students used a graphic organizer to organize their thoughts and
evidence. The culminating task included a written response to a reading passage.

My cat! As a Complex Thinker, he was always able to
get us to do what he wanted. We pet him at his whim
etc. He Effectively Communicated his desire to be let in
or out, as evidenced by the fact that we always go up to
do this for him. And finally, as a Quality Producer, his
hunting skills were finely tunned…as well as his excellent

The teaching of grammar and conventions takes a back seat to the development of creative ideas and focus on
critical thinking skills. However, the appropriate use of grammar and the skillful use of writing conventions will
greatly enhance students’ written work. Come and see how students respond to their daily oral language lessons.

by Joan Fujio & Roxanne Kaino
Location: Library
“Language processes (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are meaning-making processes that involve
thinking, discovery, and ordering.” As an extension activity of the SEE response initiative, we involved the students
in activities which stimulated their creativity and engaged them as critical thinkers and effective communicators.
The students had the opportunity to re-write a picture book and express their ideas through movement.

I believe that our Principal, Mike Harano exemplifies all of
the GLOs in the way he runs our school. He must be a

Communicator in order to get the whole school moving in
the same direction. He attends every extracurricular
activity as a Community Contributor and pushes the use
of technology in the school as an Effective and Ethical
