A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso
The readings today talk about life and death. God tells Ezekiel that we will know for sure that He, God is real, after the dead
rise to life.
St Paul tells us that the real death is caused by sin when we separate ourselves from God. That is the real death.
In the Gospel Jesus raises Lazarus who had been dead and buried for 4 days.
In the Gospel, John uses the lines which tell us about what our attitude should be. The shortest verse in the Bible is found in
this chapter (Jn 11:35): “Jesus wept.” Jesus is shown to be truly human. He cares for and misses his friend Lazarus and he
cares for Lazarus’ sisters Mary and Martha. He sees the grief they are experiencing at the death of their brother and he sheds
tears for them. Just like us. Yet Christ weeps for our sins, for those things we do which separate us from his love.
Jesus then asks that the stone be taken from the grave. Mary says (Jn11:39) “Surely there will be a stench.” It should be
expected after 4 days in the tomb. But a worse stench is the stench of our sins. Whenever we turn against God, turn against
our fellow humans. When we lie, cheat, steal. When I think only of me; take and never give. Hold grudges. Treat people
poorly; not as I would like them to treat me.
In the third line (Jn 11:43) Jesus offers life to Lazarus. “Lazarus, come out!” In the same way he calls each of us, dead in our
sins to come back into the life he intended for us.
Could Lazarus have said, “No, Lord”? Once dead, could he have chosen to stay in the grave? I think most people would obey
the command of Christ, unless they are deeply depressed, not in their right mind (of course, the person would be dead, so he
would not have any functioning mind).
On the other hand, people living in sin continually say “No, Lord. I’d rather stay dead in my sins.” There are those who say, “I
don’t have any sins.” To that St. John replies, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in
us.” (1Jn1:10)
What should we do? St James, our patron wrote, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:8) The Lord left us the sacrament of Reconciliation for this
purpose, so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be reconciled to God, to be at peace with God. Now is the acceptable
time; this is the day; don’t put it off.

nos viramos contra nuestros semejantes, cuando mentimos, engañamos, o robamos. Cuando sólo pienso en mí;
Siempre tomando y aprovechando y nunca dar. Guardar rencor.
me trataran a mi.
nosotros.
¿Podría Lázaro haber dicho: "No, Señor"?
pecados.”
¡Pecadores,
límpiense las manos! ¡Ustedes los inconstantes, purifiquen su corazón!” (Santiago 4: 8).
No
se trata de divorciarse. Es solo para
personas ya divorciadas. Si tiene problemas
en el matimonio debe habalr con el
sacerdote.
nuestro tiempo, nuestros talentos y nuestro tesoro,
nosotros.
