An observation is information gathered with one`s senses

An observation is information gathered with one’s senses
– something you can see, hear, feel, smell or taste.
Sometimes scientists use tools to make observations
called measurements. Other scientists can use their
senses to make the same observations. Observations
are evidence that can be used to draw conclusions or
support claims.
An inference is a conclusion based on observations,
knowledge, and evidence. Sometimes inferences are
assumptions or opinions, and they can be right or wrong.
A scientific inference is supported by evidence and is
logical. Other scientists can check inferences by making
measurements and observations.
Look at each of the pictures on the following pages.

the left column. Make an inference based on this
observation and record it in the right column.
