The weather on May 1 may feel more like February, but the calendar says for sure it’s May. That also means
that this is the last newsletter of the school year. I know it’s cliché to say, but oh how quickly the school year
flies by. Items of interest and one more opportunity to share student success stories are listed below.
Parent requests for class placement
In past years, parent requests for class placement have been allowed at the middle school. This practice will
continue for the 2017-2018 school year. Parent requests regarding class placement will be given full consideration if all of the following conditions have been met:
1. Requests must be communicated in writing to the principal no later than June 2, 2017.
2. Requests must be based on a specific educational need.
3. Requests should not reference an individual teacher by name. Rather, the request could reference a
teaching style, a classroom environment, or some other special need.
Every class placement request that satisfies all of the conditions described above will be given full consideration. However, the always-present potential for a high number of parent requests prevents us from guaranteeing any request.

They help us in so many ways that often go unnoticed. Supportive parents + great teachers = A+ school.
THANK YOU for everything you do each and every year to support our school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Finley, Principal

Phantom Phundamentals Update
Students at West De Pere Middle School continue to impress the teachers and staff with their acts of character at school, in extracurricular programs, and at home. Here are a few recent examples of the way that our students are demonstrating strong character.
Sam Roffers, Grade 6, Displayed Citizenship & Respect. During WI Forward testing, Sam was walking in the hallway with some
classmates and reminded them to quiet down to not disrupt the testers.
Tyler Rodewald & Nathan Wesoloski, Grade 7, Displayed Citizenship when upon seeing a mess of crayons in the hallway after
school, Tyler and Nathan picked all of the crayons up and sorted them back into the box, even though they were not responsible for
the mess.
Jackson VanDenHeuvel, Grade 8, Exhibited Honesty & Courage when he let the teacher know he had put in the wrong score for his
test which had given him a higher grade for the grading period. He didn't have to say anything, but he did!

French Club News: Poisson d’avril!
French Club students gathered on Thursday, April 6 to celebrate the French holiday, Poisson d’avril. Poisson d’avril
occurs every year on April 1 and is the French version of April Fool’s Day. The April Fool’s Day tradition stems from
the 16th century when King Charles XIV switched France to the new Gregorian calendar. Prior to this, New Year’s had
been celebrated from March 25 to April 1, according to the Roman calendar. Those who hadn’t heard about the move
or who chose to continue to celebrate New Year’s on April 1 were made fun of as ‘fools’. In France, the common practical joke is to place a paper fish on the back of an unsuspecting ‘fool’ and yell “Poisson d’avril!” when the fish is discovered. At the French Club event, students decorated paper fish to display in the French classroom throughout the
month of April, and they enjoyed goldfish crackers and Swedish fish as a treat.
The next French Club event will be held on Thursday, May 11 from 2:45-3:45 p.m. in the French classroom. We will end the year
with a French kahoot and ice cream social!

French Students Experience French History and Food
Eighth grade French students traveled to Milwaukee on April 19, 2017 to experience Milwaukee’s French history and food. The day’s
events were coordinated by Milwaukee-based company, Milwaukee Food & City Tours. On the tour, students were escorted by Milwaukee-native tour guides and made the following stops:
•
•
•
•
•
Pere Marquette Park : Students heard an overview of Milwaukee history.
St. Joan of Arc Chapel on the Marquette University campus: This chapel was originally built in France in the 15th century,
was moved to Long Island, New York in 1927, and was later relocated to Milwaukee in 1964. While in New York, the
famous Joan of Arc Stone was added to the church. According to legend, Joan of Arc prayed before a statue of Mary, the
mother of Jesus, while standing on this stone. At the end of her prayer, she would kiss the stone. Ever since, it has been
colder than the stones surrounding it.
Café Benelux in the historic Third Ward: Students enjoyed frites and dipping sauces.
Lake Park Bistro: Students enjoyed a traditional French meal of beef bourguignon.
North Shore Boulangerie: Students enjoyed traditional French croissants and had the opportunity to purchase other traditional French baked goods.
Students had a great time on the trip and were accompanied by French teachers, Madame VDB and Madame Sternig, as well as by parent
chaperons, Madame Hecker and Madame McKeon.
