The Indiana Department of Education recognizes LHSI as a “Four Star School,” one that performs in the upper 25th percentile of schools in performance. Sixty-one percent of our students come from Lutheran Association churches; thirty-nine percent come from our Indianapolis community families. Our student body is diverse — 16% are from minority groups. Currently, Lutheran has 18 teaching faculty (12 full-time and six part-time). There are 12 staff members (seven full-time and five part-time). Seventy-eight percent of the faculty hold a Masters degree and 100% are State of Indiana certified. Athletics More than 70% of Lutheran High School students are involved in at least one sport. Seventeen interscholastic sports are offered. Lutheran High School is a member of the Indiana Crossroads Conference consisting of: Beech Grove High School, Cardinal Ritter High School, Lutheran High School, Monrovia High School, Park Tudor High School, Scecina Memorial High School, Speedway High School, and Triton Central High School. Ryan Baglow is Commissioned and Installed and Catherine Gould is inducted as Teachers. First day of school – 240 students are enrolled. Two dual credit classes in English are offered through IU’s Advanced College Project. The newly-formed Fine Arts Booster Club supports music, theatre, visual arts, and forensics programs at Lutheran High School. September 2013 Sarah Bredensteiner (2010) is awarded LHSI’s Salvatore and Marjorie Gioe Memorial Scholarship. Homecoming Court is named. Jenny Vance is named Alumnus of the Year. Saints Games and the Homecoming football game are big hits with students, alumni, and friends of LHS. October 2013 LHSI’s Spell Bowl team places first in the Indiana Crossroads Conference (ICC) invitational. Dig Pink raises $3500 for breast cancer research. The 12th annual Kristi’s Games is held. Saints Volleyball team is Marion County and Regional champions. November 2013 Sugarplum Holiday Fair is a success. 32 students are inducted into the National Honor Society. LHSI Emeriti Association is formed, recognizing former members of the Board of Directors. Kathy Anderson (1994) is named Volleyball Coach of the Year by the ICGSA. Veterans Day Chapel honors area veterans. Casey Colgate and Casey Koons are named to the All State Volleyball team. Grandparents Day is celebrated. The Theatre Department presents Spoon River Anthology. 17 student-athletes are named to the ICC Academic AllConference team; eight are named to the All-Conference team. IN REVIEW December 2013 Seniors take part in the Ray Skillman Clothe-A-Child program; all students participate in the RTV6 Toy Drive. Christmas Concert and art show are held at Emmaus Lutheran Church. Sam Weeden, Quentin Brown, and Tyler Reed are named All-State for football. January 2014 Matt Mueller is Commissioned and Installed as Teacher. LHSI wins the Chick-fil-A Challenge. The 2014 LHS Olympics are held as part of National Lutheran Schools Week festivities. The Capital Campaign for Lutheran High exceeds its goal of $600,000. February 2014 2008 Boys’ Basketball Team is honored. Lutheran’s VEX Robotics team qualifies for Championship competition. Casey Colgate signs with IU Kokomo (volleyball). State March 2014 Students participate in the Polar Plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics. LHSI uses a Virtual Learning Day to make up a snow day. Band goes on Tour to Chicago and Wisconsin. Choir tours Quebec and Ontario, Canada and Niagara Falls. Seven student athletes earn ICC All Conference awards. Academic Super Bowl Interdisciplinary team advances to state finals. Public Safety Chapel honors local Police and Firefighters. Carl Schulenburg is named Distinguished Hoosier. LuFest 2014 raises over $100,000 with guest speaker Katie Stam, a tribute to retiring teacher Carl Schulenburg, a special appeal to raise funds to transform the Strakis Family Academic Center of Excellence, and an After Glow party featuring Thomas Finchum’s (2008) band Northern Nights. 2013-2014 / YEAR IN REVIEW CONTINUED April 2014 Lutheran Theatre presents Wizard of Oz. Toria Turner and alumnus Kayla Sombke (2012) are awarded the Salvatore and Marjorie Gioe Scholarship. Jerry and Karen Roesener present the Henry Arnold Kespohl Scholarship to junior Katherine Krupski. Abigail Pikulik is named Outstanding Cadet for the LHSI Civil Air Patrol squadron. Junior Benton Turner places third in the state in VFW’s Voice of Democracy contest. 13th annual Golf Outing is held at Smock Golf Course. Kylie Baynes signs with IU (women’s rowing); Beau Barham with Aurora Univ. (basketball); and Reid Olson with Lincoln Trail Col. (softball). Fifteen students are named to the 2014 Spring ICC All-Academic Team. Lutheran High School’s 36th Commencement celebrates the achievements of the 55 members of the Class of 2014, including Valedictorian David Failinger, Co-Salutatorians Sarah Deitz and Gabrielle Wirick, and Outstanding Senior Samantha Ayres.
