Transformation Information eLearning Kit© Puberty Tips Lesson Plan Page 1 LESSON TITLE: Puberty Tips LESSON DESCRIPTION: Going through puberty can be tough, but it is a normal process that everyone has to go through. Having support from friends, family and adults you trust is helpful during this time of change. Coach Craley is a puberty expert, who is ready to help your students! He offers some useful tips such as; eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly. Coach Craley’s tips will help make the whole process of puberty a lot easier to manage. GRADE LEVEL: 4-6 INSTRUCTION PHASE: Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis DURATION: 10 minutes DELIVERY METHOD: Instructor-led Individual MATERIALS: 1. Computer(s) with Internet access or Kit on CD 2. Projector Transformation Information eLearning Kit© Puberty Tips Lesson Plan Page 2 MANAGEMENT: For this educator-led activity, students will be working in one large group or in two to three smaller groups to watch the activity on the projection screen in the front of the classroom. This could also be done as an individual activity with each student at their own computer and working at their own pace. The activity script can also be accessed by launching the Activity Script link. LESSON OBJECTIVES & STANDARDS: The students will be able to: 1. State three ways to cope with changes during puberty. 2. Explain the importance of personal hygiene during puberty. Educational Standards Click here to view how this activity aligns with your state’s standards. http://www.learntobehealthy.org/parentteachers/kits/state-standards.aspx ANTICIPATORY SET: Begin by relating student experiences to the objectives of the lesson by asking the following: What kinds of things to you do to cope with the changes of puberty? What kinds of things could you improve on? How often do you exercise? Would you say that you have a healthy diet? Do you think you get enough rest? TEACHING – Input: Lesson Terms 1. Adolescence is the stage of the life cycle between the ages of 11 and 21. 2. Hormones are special chemicals made by the body that cause changes. 3. Puberty is the time in life when boys and girls become physically capable of producing offspring. TEACHING – Modeling: Students will gather as one group or two-three smaller groups to watch the activity as it is projected onto the large screen in the classroom. Once the activity is launched, the Coach will appear and introduce the students to Puberty Tips Activity. The activity begins with the Coach in the Transformation Information 101 classroom giving a brief overview of some of the things that can sometimes be difficult while going through puberty. The Coach will then introduce a number of things that males and females can do to make the process of puberty a much more manageable. Transformation Information eLearning Kit© Puberty Tips Lesson Plan Page 3 Some of these things include getting plenty of rest, exercise, eating healthy foods, and staying clean. After the Coach has covered these topics, he will send the students back to the main menu if they wish to complete any other activities in the kit. TEACHING – Check for Understanding: 1. Puberty can be a difficult time, but there are things you can do to better manage the hormonal changes. What is the relationship between your body needing at least 8-10 hours of sleep every night and puberty? Regular exercise? Proper nutrition? How will you apply Coach Craley’s Puberty Tips in your daily life? What would you recommend to a friend that is going through puberty and is not sure what they can do to better manage their hormonal changes? 2. Body odor and acne is directly related to hormonal changes and can be embarrassing, but this is normal during puberty. Can you list three things you can do for your personal hygiene? Why is it important to use deodorant daily? What types of facial cleansing products can we use? How would you apply what you have learned about personal hygiene into your daily routine? ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY: FAMILY PRACTICE HANDOUT This Family Practice Handout is designed to extend the lesson objectives outside the classroom. CLOSURE: Review key points of the lesson to help students form a coherent understanding of the lesson objectives. Ask students to tell or show you what they have learned, using questions similar to those found in Check for Understanding.
