ReNew Our Schools Classroom Lessons Written by: Anthony, Amaya, Ava, Brett, Grace, Lilia, Malia, and Riley Hi, my name is __________________________________ and I’m an Energy Eagle. Today I’m going to tell you About the Renew Our Schools Competition. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Energy contest, “Renew Our Schools” Contest is between other St. Vrain Schools Fall River, Central, Centennial, Burlington, Lyons, Prairie Ridge, and Red Hawk, to see how how much energy can be saved (at the school and students’ homes). We could win $20,000 for our school! The contest ends February 21! The way to win the contest is both at home and at school! At school: you can turn off lights & Elmos, unplug computers that you’re not using! At home: you can take the Home Energy Improvement Questionnaire online, and unplug chargers, computers, TVs, game systems when you’re not using them! Why should you save energy? Raise your hand if you have some ideas. (kids answer) There are two types of energy. Does anyone know them? (nonrenewable and renewable) Nonrenewable Energy *What does nonrenewable mean? (have the kids answer) *It is the type of things we will eventually run out of on earth. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. *There are three main nonrenewable sources of energy: oil, coal and natural gas. *One type of nonrenewable energy is oil. Oil is energy because you take it to a factory and burn it. *That turns it into gasoline. *Next, you put it into a turnline, and it makes electricity. *To get oil you need to dig 100s of miles down, and then you finally get oil. Oil is also called petroleum. (show picture) *Another, kind of non renewable energy is coal. *Coal is energy because millions of years ago coal had plants inside of it and it had sun shine onto it. *Then you’d burn it, and it’ll turn into energy. (show picture) *The same thing happens with natural gas. You get it burn it and then it turns into electricity. Heating uses natural gas. Renewable *What does renewable mean? (have kids answer)*Never runs out.* different kinds of solar are: water, wind, and solar (all used to make electricity) *water: hydropower (lots of Boulder county get their energy for this. Moving water gives us electricity like a water wheel that spins and turns a generator (motor) and that makes electricity. (show picture) *Sun: solar panels. Chemicals in sp react due to sun’s rays, cells move around, makes electricity. *part of the problem is that we’re not set up to use renewable sources.(Show picture) Wind: windmills turn and produce electricity (Show picture) PROBLEM: *We’re set up to use nonrenewables so sometimes it’s difficult to us renewable energy. Good news is that using renewable energy water, solar and wind has grown a lot *In colorado 80% of electricity comes from coal. Lights, computers, tv’s are running from coal and burn at a power plant to use electricity. Turn and talk with your neighbor: Why might this not be good for our environment? Share answers Question: What can we do about this? How to Save Energy Ways you can save energy: Have on one overhead light at a time if possible. Ask to be delamped if your room is too bright. Turn off your classroom lights when you leave the room. Turn off your TVs when not in use. Turn off the pod lights on sunny days. Leave your shades open to get sun in. Turn off lights after leaving. Make sure computers are shut down using Apple Shut Down. Turn off small appliances. Use power strips and toggle switches. Do the Home Energy Improvement questionnaire: http://conservationcenter.org/rnos/homechecklist/ Volt our Mascot> *Remember to SAVE the lights! Thank you classroom Energy Eagles. Please stand up to be recognized. Could you share what’s going well in your class and one thing you’re working on. Home Energy Survery ● Everybody received a pink Home Energy Improvement Questionnaire on a pink sheet of paper. It looks like this: (hold up pink sheet) ● Your parents can go online and fill out the survey. When they do, return the pink sheet to your teacher and you will be entered in a raffle to have a root beer float party with Mr. Ball! ● If you don’t have internet at home, ask for a paper copy of the survey. Fill it out at home and return it to school to be entered in the raffle. ● Our goal is to have 100% of our school community fill out the Home Energy Improvement questionnaire. ● Commit to saving energy in your home! ● Anyone living in the Front Range area may fill out this form for Eagle Crest. Send this link to your families and friends — the more online forms we fill out, the more points we earn for the contest! *show picture EGauge http://sveaglee.egaug.es Above is a link to the EGauge for our school.
