Faulty Electrics lead to bathroom fatalities
Water and electricity in close proximity can make your bathroom a deadly place.
DIY electrical installations in particular, can have tragic consequences. A local
loving mother and her young child were fatally electrocuted whilst having a bath
together. A DIY electric heater installed on a wall came lose and plunged into
the water. The electric current instantly killed the child and the mother died later
in hospital.
Hogging the Hot Water
Australians like long showers. Recent statistics show 50% of Australians spends
longer than 7 minutes in the shower. Nearly 10% of those questioned admitted
that they take on average around 15 minutes in the shower. With the onset of
winter, a freezing bathroom always creates the urge to shower that little bit
longer. Over the course of winter, those extra couple of minutes in a shower (with
a standard showerhead) could mean using 2750 litres of water and $50 worth of
electricity per person.

advise you how to stop them. This week, I had to check a repeated electrical
fault in an Adelaide house. My inspection revealed some halogen down lights
were overheating and damaging the electrics. I repaired the damage and
installed heat guards. My advice to the client was that you should use new
lighting technologies such as in future use new lighting technologies such as
LED, as these produce less heat and are more efficient.
Signs and Symptoms: Electrical Circuit Risks
• Do your circuits frequently trip?
• Does your switchboard look antiquated?
• Do you regularly use current hungry devices such as an electric heater?
• Are your bathrooms electrical points a min. of 1.2m from the showerhead?
