January 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
Happy New Year! Welcome back, we hope you have had a very restful holiday.
Our topic this term is Space. Please see the topic web for detailed information.
We appreciate children bringing in resources related to the topic and encourage
home research.
We will be sending home a design project over February half term to build a
spaceship so it might be worthwhile to start gathering some old recycling!
On Monday 9th January we will have a visit from The Explorer Dome. This is an
amazing experience in a huge silver dome which will be set up in the hall. Each
Year 2 class will hear wonderful Creation stories.
If you know anyone who would be willing to share their experiences and enrich
children’s learning by coming in and talking about their culture, festivals and
celebrations please let us know.
We hope you will be able to find a few extra minutes several times a week to
help your child with their spellings. This term we will be learning the rules for
adding suffixes (endings) to root words. For example
 If a base word ends in a ‘final e’ such as ride we drop the e if the suffix begins
with a vowel – ride/riding

If a base word ends in y we sometimes need to change the y to i before adding
the suffix – cry/cries

If a base word ends with a single consonant letter we double the consonant –
run/running

In many cases the suffix can be added without changing the base word –
play/playful
Please encourage children to write the words (joined script) as well as spelling
them aloud. We will continue with our Friday spelling quizzes, with will consist of
about ten words containing the phoneme for that week.
Any boxes of tissues would be very greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your help and support
Best wishes
