Incoming 7th Graders: Summer Reading
Incoming 7th Graders, you get to read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein OR The Cay by
Theodore Taylor! For the novel you choose, you also get to choose two of the following
assignments to complete. Bring both of your assignments to class on the first day of
school. Work hard and be creative!

Divine Dialogue
Imagine the main character of the novel met Jesus
Christ! Write three paragraphs about what this
encounter would be like. Be sure to include dialogue
that matches the personalities of both the character
you have chosen and of Jesus Christ. Be prepared to
discuss your assignment in class.
Moral Combat
Choose a major moral conflict (choosing right from
wrong) that a character(s) faces in the novel. Write
one paragraph summarizing this conflict, another
paragraph about the resolution of this conflict, and a
final paragraph about how this conflict and
resolution relates to your life, another book, or
another character that you know. Be prepared to
discuss your assignment in class.

Imagine that the main character has an Instagram
account. Draw and color three images that the main
character has posted, including hashtags. Write
three paragraphs, one for each image, about how
each of these images reveal something about the
character's personality. Be prepared to discuss your
assignment in class.
