SOUTH SUDANESE REFUGEES IN UGANDA
NEWS FROM AFRICA
LIBERIA
“She was in a family of nine but she alone survived”
Sleweon’s email was a shock to our entire staff. Ebola had a stranglehold on
Liberia for many months and during that time; the Worship FM team never lost
focus as people died all around them.
The community near the station suffered many Ebola casualties; for many months
our team struggled to maintain the delicate balance of ministering hope to
people while each staff member faced personal needs for basic survival.
Everything at that time was in extremely short supply as international availability
of food became scarce in West African countries ravaged by Ebola. At the early
stages of the crisis, we made an appeal to High Adventure friends and partners
who quickly stood strong with food and medicine support.
Sleweon’s team worked long hours to encourage community around them with
biblical messages and music…but we sensed we should do more.
Our friends at Galcom (www.galcom.org) have created an amazing ministry
tool-the IMPAX solar powered radio, directly linked to our Worship FM 101.7
station and equipped with stored music, message and a Bible for listening, after
radio is off the air. As Ebola victims and loved ones looked into the face of death
itself, we knew they should not do it alone. We contacted our friends at High
Adventure USA (www.highadventure.net) who shared this need with their
partners. Soon we had $15,000 in hand for IMPAX. Within days Galcom partners
added $30,000 and 1500 unique electronic radio missionaries were on their way
to Liberia.
SPECIAL DELIVERY
Mary Broh was busy caring for her husband who had been sick for several days in
!
and her family were taken to isolation for care. Tragically, only Mary survived. Her
entire family of 8 lost their battle with Ebola.
But she is not alone or forgotten-the Worship FM team met with her and Mary
was given an IMPAX radio. Today she gratefully listens to Worship FM; especially
enjoying the Bible in her Loma dialect. We need to pray for Mary and many like
her who lost everyone! Ebola’s effects will be felt for years.
STIGMA
Liberian Ebola survivors are unique and sometimes misunderstood as they reintegrated into their communities following the crisis. Although accepted, there is
a level of apprehension that creates isolation following such a tragic community
circumstance. Like Mary, they need to know they are not alone-they need to hear
of the assuring love of God who created and protected them, so they are among

MARY BROH LISTENING TO WORSHIP FM
Sleweon’s Worship FM team loves their community unconditionally and we are so honored to stand with them. Special
thanks to High Adventure USA and Galcom and to our own Canadian support team who rallied to keep Worship FM team
safe and on air!
ZAMBIA
The end of 2014 was miraculous for us as we nearly lost the
dream to reach Lusaka with indigenous Christian radio for lack of
funding. But as a long-time friend went home to the Lord, he left
behind an estate that enabled us to initiate One Love FM just
weeks before the license was due to expire!
It would seem easy after that. Not quite…
First there was the ongoing dialogue with broadcast authorities

accommodate a growing Zambian modern community.
Translation=months of dotting “i’s” and crossing “t’s” and
engineering reports and equipment testing…etc etc…
Then there was the landlord. We had just jumped all the technical
hurdles and ready to start when our landlord gave notice he
found a tenant who would pay him more for our space-we were

affordable studio space.
LONG WAY TO THE ROOF WITHOUT ELEVATOR
We cannot forget the tower. Our partner found an open spot on

tower to hold our antenna. We did not mind the fact the

roof…we were getting excited nonetheless. But then we
discovered the roof was leaking, requiring repair, and we could
not place the tower there in time to meet the government
inspection…
J<K As we readied to
broadcast, the authorities who had given verbal approval had
somehow not gotten around to putting that in writing…for
months! That particular delay required thousands of dollars as
our team stood in place…marking time (military term for not
moving while staying active).
The last straw was the Studio Transmission Link (STL). This special
electronic connector enables us to send radio broadcasts to the

up and could not get us on the air!
By now, it seemed like we could hear the enemy enjoying his
moment with a demonic chuckle. After all confusion is his forte.
But we do not serve him-we serve the Creator who made him;
very recently He stopped the circle of confusion with amazing
clarity!

ONE LOVE FM RECEIVES APPROVAL
Without warning, we were suddenly given the opportunity to
place our antenna on one of the highest towers in Africa! Our
antenna would be at 600’ affording us the best possible
broadcast range.

suggestion was made to investigate space on Lusaka’s highest

business clients and not small a Christian broadcaster. However
we did so, and delighted to be offered affordable space on the

space on the roof which we would reach the BIG tower with our
STL.
After 7 months of juggling every kind of obstruction and
interruption with very limited budget, we were suddenly given
written notice to begin test broadcasting; as these words are read,
our One Love FM radio is on the air over Lusaka, Zambia!

villages, peace and kind words are so welcome here in the
Adjumani refugee Camp where the Ugandan gov’t is trying to
maintain peaceful coexistence, allowing us to build Usalama FM
(Peace FM) to assist them!
“Like apples of gold in settings of silver
is a word spoken in right circumstances.”
Prov. 25:11 NASB
Less than 6 months on the air, we have already had to install solar
power to avoid Uganda’s many power interruptions and failures…
we have replaced a tower damaged by a vehicle…we have added
a Sudanese female radio presenter…we have purchased a new
antenna and larger transmitter. And we are so happy to do this!
After all, we have discovered this small radio voice located just 8
km from the South Sudan border, tucked away inside a small

Recently, three residents from the Ayilo Refugee settlement (one
of Adjumani’s 15 camps) located 45 km from the station listened
to our Usalama FM broadcasts and decided they must share with MEMBERS FROM AYILO SETTLEMENT ARRIVE AT
us what is happening. They came to report Usalama FM

broadcasts are changing lives in their camp. Our presenter Martin
received their kind expressions and gave each one an IMPAX
radio.
Just 6 days later, Martin received more visitors-this time from the
Baratuku Settlement within the Adjumani Camp. And this time,
this group had travelled the 24 km to meet and pray with us as

And then very recently, members of the United Nations High
Commission for Refugees (UNCHR) along with leaders from Save
The Children International came to our studio to lead a broadcast
for World Refugee Day…and then the day of the African Child…all

Martin further shared how camp leaders now reach their entire
camp…from their camp! Apparently, Martin has it in place for
camp leaders to call our studio and as he holds his phone to the
microphone, camp leaders can now (through mobile phone)
encourage their settlement residents with messages of peaceful
coexistence.
Truly, Usalama FM is living up to its name!
BEST NEWS
Martin saved the best for last. He excitedly shared how some
women from the Ayilo settlement have decided they must pray
for their camp and so they are starting a prayer meeting. This is

UNHCR GREETS REFUGEES OVER USALAMA FM
Even in this early stage, these courageous women of God have
vision and have already planned to encourage women from all
15 settlements to begin prayer meetings within their camp
communities…and they want Usalama FM to help make this
move of God known! We can hardly wait!
TIME TO PRAY
Adjumani communities are warm to the Gospel-this is a special
moment for Christians. We need in Madi,
English and Juba Arabic language ($8.00 each and we need 600
Bibles). Please pray we can get Bibles into refugees’ hands. In
some places, leaders stand to read a Bible to many people!
We need $1,800 for a new antenna to improve our signal for
Liberian Ebola victims…please pray!
