Diane Haithman In what government and arts officials are calling the most ambitious commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall outside of Germany, a symbolic recreation of the wall that once separated East and West Berlin will be erected across Wilshire Boulevard in November. The Wall Project, painted by professional and amateur artists, will close Sunday afternoon traffic on one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares for three hours on Nov. 8 beginning at 3 p.m. The project involves the Culver City’s Wende Museum and Archive of the Cold War, the city of Los Angeles, the German Consulate General in Los Angeles and other partners, and will be officially announced Thursday. In a reenactment of the actual events, invited dignitaries will break down selected portions of the Wilshire wall, which will be placed directly in front of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Project leaders plan a live feed of the events between Los Angeles and Berlin, official sister cities since 1967. (Because of the time difference, it will already be Nov. 9 in Berlin, the day the wall came down in 1989). Professional artists who will participate include “Obama Hope” muralist Shepard Fairey, L.A. muralist Kent Twitchell and Berlin-based Thierry Noir, noted for painting his brightly colored human figures on the real wall in Berlin. Twitchell said that he plans to create portraits of the two presidents who saw the beginning and the end of the Berlin Wall, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Wholesome teen or edgy adult? Miley Cyrus’ suggestive performance raises questions about her next move. BY DAWN C. CHMIELEWSKI >>> Miley Cyrus’ provocative performance during Monday night’s “Teen Choice Awards,” in which she wore short shorts and boots and at one point straddled a pole, has set off a firestorm on the Internet over whether the act was appropriate for a 16-year-old entertainer in front of a youthful audience. On YouTube and on Twitter, followers of the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” debated whether Miley was doing a pole dance on top of a moving ice cream pushcart or was simply hanging on to the pole for balance. Some found her sultry routine over the top for the Fox award show, which attracted 4 million viewers — more than a quarter of whom are under age 18 themselves, according to Nielsen ratings. Internet gossip columnist Perez Hilton dubbed the performance “the return of Slutty Cyrus,” and an impromptu Twitter poll attracted more than 4,000 votes — 65% of whom [See Miley, Page D6] said she looked like a stripper. Suzanne Muchnic In a move that concedes a measure of victory to long-term opponents, the Autry National Center has bowed out of a protracted battle for a $175-million expansion of its facility in Griffith Park. City approval of the plan hinged on a recent demand for the Autry to make a legally binding commitment to support the Southwest Museum, located in Mount Washington, as a fully functioning art institution in perpetuity. In a letter delivered to members of the Los Angeles City Council Tuesday, the Autry stated that such a commitment would be irresponsible and that it is withdrawing its proposal. “Any further attempt to proceed with the proposed expan- sion project in Griffith Park would be an ill-advised diversion of our financial resources and an insupportable distraction from our work in serving the community,” Autry President John L. Gray states in the letter. “We come to this decision with reluctance and deep regret — but the constant delays, the past and future costs, the unyielding insistence on financial and programmatic commitments which we cannot responsibly make, and the prospect of future expensive and debilitating litigation all demand that we fulfill the Autry’s vision under different circumstances.” Councilman José Huizar, whose district includes the Southwest Museum, said the decision caught him by surprise. “I was expecting more rounds of negotiation,” he said. “It didn’t make sense to me that there would be a $175-million commitment to the expansion of the Griffith Park site and that the Autry wouldn’t want to make a commitment to [See Autry, Page D6] THEATER REVIEW A subdued farewell After all, he’s only 1 man John Hughes’ low-key funeral in Chicago’s North Shore is in keeping with his life. Wong plays 11 disparate characters in the staging of “Herringbone” at La Jolla Playhouse. “Herringbone,” now at La Jolla Playhouse starring a puckishly versatile B.D. Wong, is more of an acting feat than a memorable musical yarn — more showmanship than show. The work (which had its New York premiere in 1982) requires Wong, the “Law & Or- der: Special Victims Unit” regular who gave an indelible Broadway performance as the gender-scrambling opera diva in “M. Butterfly,” to incarnate 11 mixed-nuts characters. The occasion is a kaleidoscopic tale about an 8-year-old named George who becomes possessed by the demonic spirit of a vaudeville veteran, and if anyone from Actors’ Equity is within earshot, one of your union members is being cheated if he’s not earning at least quadruple the going rate. The production — directed by distinguished acting veteran Roger Rees and featuring an onstage trio led by pianist Dan Lipton, who also fills in as Thumbs DuBois — puts the focus squarely on its star. This small and not exactly smoothly structured story (Tom Cone wrote the book based on his play) allows a performer to multiply before our eyes, and Wong proves himself exceedingly adept at theatrical mitosis. Concentrating at first on George and his parents, Arthur and Louise, a Southern family trying to scrape by in the Depression, Wong slips in and out of personas with the cunning swiftness of an escape artist. Louise’s rich brother unexpectedly dies when a casualty of the stock market literally crashes down on his head, and Arthur [See Theater, Page D8] LAET_ 08-12-2009_ D_ 5_ D5_ LA_ 1_K TSet: 08-11-2009 21:20 WEDNESDAY , AUGUST 12, 2009 LAT I M E S . COM/ CA LEN DA R The Wall Project D5 Al Seib Los Angeles Times WALLED OFF: An artist’s rendering, left, shows what the Wall Project may look like when it is up. In 1989, East German guards prepare to let their countrymen enter West Berlin. It’s a Berlin Wall memorial and a traffic hazard all in one [Wall, from Page D1] The Wall Project will be made up of two parts: The “Wall Across Wilshire” will have as its adjunct the “Wall Along Wilshire — Eastside Gallery West,” which will have a somewhat longer life in front of the 5900 Wilshire Blvd. building, remaining in place from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14. During its short existence, the “across” wall will bisect the “along” wall, with one end of the “across” wall ending at LACMA’s outdoor installation “Urban Light.” The location is “highly symbolic,” said Justinian Jampol, president and founder of the Wende Museum. “It connects downtown to the ocean, those two cultural anchors to the city. Also, going through an area where there are lots of museums and cultural institutions, it’s very reflective of what occurred in Berlin, because when that line was drawn through the city, it divided up the cultural institutions.” Symbolism aside, the location is not random: Wayne Ratkovich, owner of the 5900 Wilshire Blvd. building, sits on the nonprofit Wende Museum’s board of directors. From Oct. 23 to Nov. 7, 40 wall panels, all 11 feet tall and 3 feet wide, will be painted on the grounds of the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park, adjacent to LACMA. Thirty of those panels will be used to construct the Wall Across Wilshire, and the other 10 will form the Wall Along Wilshire. The work of graphic designer and political illustrator Fairey will be part of the “across” wall, along with the work of graffiti artists working with ArtStorm LA and arts students at the Otis College of Art and Design, USC, CalArts and USC. The public will have the opportunity to observe the artists at work in both locations. Jampol said the painting done on the Berlin Wall circa 1989 “was not art, it was a political act. It was not about showing the finished artwork, it was dynamic.” He said that so many artists wanted to make their mark on the Berlin Wall they often began painting over another artist’s work before the paint was dry.
