Spring Tree Sale May 7
Green Gardening
The deadline to pre-order trees is April 22nd.
Natural Herbicides
The Town of Saugeen Shores appreciates the opportunity to work with many volunteers who
are instrumental in the success of our Community Tree Programs and take great pride in the
partnerships that have developed to beautify our towns. We encourage everyone to participate
in our Spring Tree Sale. For more information visit our website saugeenshores.ca.
If you have small areas or cracks and crevices that you need to weed try these natural
herbicides. They won't damage the environment and are nontoxic to mammals and beneficial
insects. Vinegar and salt is great for places where you won't be growing anything in the near
future. Spray directly on plants. To remove young plants, pour boiling water directly on them.
This is the simplest, yet safest herbicide there is. Just be careful to avoid plants that you don't
want to damage.
Gardening Tips
Put epsom salts and sugar into each hole with your plant. It makes them grow larger, leafier
and greener and adds magnesium that is helpful for pepper plants in your vegetable garden.
Don't over do it though, just a little goes a long way. You can either sprinkle a tablespoon or so
around the base of your plants that will feed as watered, or put the epsom salts into a water
bottle and spray the mixture directly on the plants.
The next time you boil or steam vegetables, don't pour the water down the drain, use it to water
potted patio plants, and you'll be amazed at how the plants respond to the "vegetable soup."
Photos courtesy Get Outdoors Youth Group
Plant a “Family Memory Tree”
Commemorate a special person or a special occasion such as a birthday, wedding or
anniversary by planting a symbolic tree within the community. Watch it grow over the years. A
perfect opportunity to visit the site and take family photos each year.
Use leftover tea and coffee grounds to acidify the soil of acid-loving plants such as azaleas,
rhododendrons, camellias, gardenias and even blueberries. A light sprinkling of about onequarter of an inch applied once a month will keep the pH of the soil on the acidic side.
Mulch
Use a combination of compost, leaves and dried plant
material from your garden, such as annuals you've
pulled up. Mound the mulch around the plant you want
to keep warm. It's like a muffler for your plants.
After using your paper shredder, store the paper until you
have enough to use as a base layer of mulch with compost or
manure spread over it to winterize your plants.
Remember not to use glossy paper ads.
Landscaping On Town Property
We would like to remind residents that when landscaping or completing site improvements on
Town property near the roads, it is necessary to contact the Public Works Department prior to
any work being completed. Tree removal on Town property is strictly prohibited.

Composting
How to Compost
Why have a Home Composting Program?
Home composting is a viable, practical and effective component of solid waste management
benefitting the municipality by reducing landfill and collection costs, benefitting the
environment by diverting waste, and benefitting the resident in making compost, lawns
and gardens healthier.
Benefits for the Municipality
Municipalities bear the responsibility for collecting and processing solid waste; home
composting reduces the amount of materials that must be collected, transported to a central
facility, and disposed of or otherwise processed. A minimum of 650 lbs. of kitchen and yard
waste can be diverted per year per household. Home composting is the most cost effective
waste management option available.
What to Compost
Composting is easy - it happens on its own.
However, there are a few things you can do to
speed up the composting process. Just follow these
four steps.
CHOP
It helps to chop up larger items like watermelon
rinds or corn cobs before putting them in your
Kitchen Collector.
EMPTY
Once your kitchen bucket is full, take it to your
Earth MachineTM and empty it out.
STIR
Mix the new material into the existing pile using
a Compost Turner, pitchfork or other garden
tool. This also adds oxygen, a key component to
successful composting.
COVER
Cover your food waste with a handful of old leaves, other dried yard waste or soil. This will
add carbon and reduce the chance of odors and fruit flies. Then put the lid back on and let
it "cook".
Kitchen Greens
Fruit scraps, vegetable scraps,
houseplant cuttings, coffee grounds,
rice & pasta, egg shells, tea bags
Leave Those Leaves
Kitchen Browns
Coffee filters, stale bread, paper
napkins & towels, dryer lint, hair
Mulched or shredded leaves are an excellent source of nutrients and protection for your lawn and
garden. Mulch helps retain moisture by reducing soil's exposure to sun and slowing evaporation. It
chokes out weeds too.
Yard Greens
Plant & hedge clippings, flowers,
vegetables, grass (small amounts)
For best results, shred leaves when they are dry. Push your mower slowly over areas where there
are lots of leaves; you may have to run over them twice. Only a sharp mower blade is needed, but a
mulching blade, available from your local hardware or garden store, can make the job even easier.
Spread leaves over your lawn to quickly decompose or dig them directly into your garden.
In fall, spread leaf mulch on gardens and around shrubs and trees as winter protection. Leave
some space around shrubs and trees when mulching. Mulch is most effective when it is 2-3 inches
(6-7 cm) deep.
Yard Browns
Leaves, straw or hay, small twigs/
chips, dried grass and weeds
Don’t Compost
Meat, fish, bones, dairy products,
oils or fats, sauces, ashes, pet
waste, diseased plants, mature
weeds with seeds
Don't forget to compost any leftovers in the backyard or the Saugeen Shores compost site, located
on the 14th Concession beside the Southampton Landfill.

Emerald Ash Borer
Rain Barrels – Save Money,
Energy & the Environment
Signs of Infestation
Tree decline, including:
· thinning crown
· diminished density of leaves
· evidence of adult beetle feeding
on leaves
· long shoots growing from the trunk
or branches
· vertical cracks in the trunk
· small D-shaped emergence holes
· S-shaped tunnels under the bark filled
with fine sawdust
1. Save Money
Conserve municipal water supply and cut household water bills by up to 40%. Rain water,
free from chlorine and water treatment chemicals, is an excellent water source for lawns,
plants and gardens.
2. Reduce Energy Costs
The use of rain barrels lowers municipal water demands and saves
energy at water and wastewater treatment facilities.
3. Help Prevent Sewer Back-ups
Intense rainstorms, which are occurring more frequently in
many parts of the country, are widely attributed to climate
change. Rain barrels can help reduce sewer back-ups and
flooding that may occur during periods of intense rainfall by
containing storm water runoff thus preventing storm sewers
from becoming overwhelmed.
Contact the CFIA
If you see suspected signs of infestation
on your ash trees or if you plan on moving
firewood (e.g., when camping, relocating or
managing a woodlot), contact the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for more
information.
Rain barrels come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, colours
and prices. Please visit our local retailers to find the one that
suits you.

Cleaning the Natural Way
Eco-All Purpose Spray
Once again the County of Bruce will be conducting Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Events throughout Bruce County during the summer. Please look for information regarding
dates, times and locations in your local newspapers, Saugeen Shores and/or Bruce County
website.
Hazardous materials are those that can catch fire, react or explode when mixed with other
substances, if it's corrosive, or if it's toxic. Special wastes are materials such as batteries,
pressurized & aerosol containers, portable fire extinguishers, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides,
insecticides, pesticides, paints & coatings, oil bottles & filters, fluorescent lights, pharmaceuticals,
antifreeze & solvents. Improper disposal of many household products in drains, sewers, backyards
or landfill sites, is not only hazardous to public health but also contaminates our water supply and
other natural resources. The following symbols indicate the material is hazardous but be aware,
not all products carry these symbols.
Corrosive
Toxic
Batteries (household and
auto), oven cleaners, pool
chemicals, drain openers.
Pesticides, over the
counter and prescription
medicines, cleaners.
Reactive
Flammable
Ammonia, pool chemicals,
bleach, fluorescent bulbs
(tubes & compact).
Oils, solvents, gasoline, paint,
bbq propane tanks, nail
polish/cosmetics, anti freeze.
Commercial, Agricultural, Industrial Wastes, Or Volumes, PCB's,
Infectious, Sharps Or Radioactive Wastes Will Not Be Accepted.
To reduce volumes, paints can be combined in one container. Empty or dried paint cans and
aerosols are blue box recyclable. Bring gasoline in containers that can be disposed of. Gas cans
will not be emptied and returned. Check the calendar in May and August for collection dates
and location. Visit brucecounty.on.ca for more info.
Squirt some dishwashing liquid into a spray bottle of white vinegar. The vinegar's antibacterial and antiseptic properties combine with the detergent's cleansing action to make a
cost-effective all-purpose cleaner.
Cleaning Windows
Window-cleaning is a job for cool, cloudy days, so the sun doesn't dry the windows too fast,
causing streaks. While there are many window-cleaning formulas on the market, the most
effective is simply a squeeze of dishwashing liquid in a small bucket of warm water. Apply the
water vigorously with scrunched-up newspaper, working first in circles, then up-and-down
and sideways to remove dirt thoroughly while avoiding streaks.
Natural Soap Scum Remover
Juice six lemons and pour the strained juice into a spray bottle. Apply the lemon juice
thoroughly to your tiles, glass and fixtures. Rinse off and wipe dry. Your shower will be
sparkling clean and smelling fresh and fragrant.
DIY Furniture Polish
If you want your timber furniture to gleam without the expense of commercial furniture
polish, make your own polish by combining 2 cups of olive oil with the juice of one lemon.
Test the polish on an unobtrusive area before use. Apply with a soft cloth onto hardwood
furniture for a natural shine. This mixture must be used once it is made - do not store it.
Left-over tea is another excellent natural furniture polish as the tannic acid in the tea
removes residue while giving a lustrous finish. Place three or four black tea bags into a cup of
boiling water and leave them to steep while the water cools. Wipe the tea water over timber
furniture using a soft cloth.

Save on Your Energy Bill
Make your home an Energy Star! When you do home maintenance, also do a home energy audit
to find out how you can save money by making your home more energy efficient.
Reduce The Risk Of
Frozen Water Lines
This Winter
If every home replaced just one conventional light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb,
we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year.
Shut Off and Unplug
Simply shut off all the lights before you leave in
the morning, and unplug electrical equipment
that you aren't using during the day and while
you sleep - especially your work and home
computers.
We want to remind residents to take measures to reduce the risk of frozen
water lines and meters this winter. We suggest the following:
· Winterizing your water meter will prevent damage from freezing.
· R
egular inspections of the meter help to prevent any potential material
damages.
Save On Your
Water Bill
· If it lies in a non-insulated meter pit, protect it by using polyurethane or
expanded polystyrene slabs. Make sure the protective frame and cap are
tightly secured and the cover is closed.
· Protect both the meter and the pipes from exposure to cold drafts.
· Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead
of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.
· A
sk a licensed plumber or supplier about materials to insulate your pipes
and meters. If your meter is in an unheated garage, make sure the meter is
insulated.
· Wash fruits and vegetables in a basin. Use a
vegetable brush.
· Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses.
· Seal air leaks in your home and garage.
· Do not use water to defrost frozen foods; thaw
in the refrigerator overnight.
Do Not
· D
o not use moisture absorbing materials (straws, textiles, paper, glass wool)
to insulate.
· Do not use an open flame or pour hot water on meter if it freezes.
· Do not completely turn off the heat when it is cold.
· Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading
into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.
· Add food wastes to your compost pile instead
of using the garbage disposal.
· Wash only full loads of laundry or use the
appropriate water level or load size selection
on the washing machine.
· D
o not solely rely on the Town's curb stop to completely turn off the water
supply to your residence. Always verify that the flow has been stopped.
During Extremely Cold Weather
· O
pen kitchen, bathroom, and laundry cabinet doors to allow warmer air to
circulate around the plumbing during cold weather.
· If you feel your lines are prone to freezing in extreme temperatures, you
might want to consider running a small stream of water from your tap. This
will be at your expense.

you see a car with a flashing
green light in its window? The
flashing green lights you see in
the front window of cars means
those drivers are part-time
firefighters on their way to an
emergency. If you see a car with
a flashing green light, please be
courteous and yield the right
of way.

Emergency Vehicles
How should you react to an approaching emergency vehicle? Take lights and sirens seriously.
Pull to the right and stop. It's the law.
School Buses
You must stop whenever you approach a stopped school bus with its upper alternating red
lights flashing, regardless of whether you are behind the bus or approaching it from the front.
Do not go until the bus moves or the lights have stopped flashing.
