READER RESPONSE LOG This reader response log is your opportunity to share your reflection, insight, and connection to literature. Remember, interpreting literature is a personal experience; what it means and how it affects the reader will be different for each individual. Directions: 1. Please write a three to five line summary of the reading. This should be a very brief, concise overview of the plot. Stick to the bare and basic facts and don't get lost in too much detail. Remember you may only write up to five lines of plot summary-not five sentences. This will always be paragraph #1. 2. You must identify one theme from each You must follow the TS, CD, CM, CM, handouts that explain CDs and CMsand ill this format. * There is 110 "I" in the piece you read. This will always be paragraph #2. CS format for this paragraph. You will need to refer to the other the one chunkparagraph, This is theonly paragraph that will be theme paragraph-e-very formal. Sample paragraph: One theme in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is that one must be willing to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. For example, when Malfoy takes Neville's Rernemberall, HatTY takes a broom and gets it back. This shows that he cannot stand someone who picks on others. This also shows that Harry is now a hero to those less fortunate. As a result, Harry has found a place where he belongs and wants to protect the vulnerable. 3. On the same paper, you now need to share your personal response to the reading. This will get you to paragraphs 3 and 4 (you may always write more than 4 paragraphs, but 4 is the minimum). You must choose at least 2 bullet points/topics from the list below as you consider any or all of the following for paragraphs 3 and 4 and beyond(5 and 6): • • • • What did you learn about life in general, or life for a particular character? What was the author's reason or purpose for this story? What questions do you have for the author? What questions about the literature selection do you think have been left unanswered? • What do you like or dislike about the literature selection? • How does the literature selection relate to your life, the life of someone you know, characters in other works, or life in general (try to relate to the theme)? • What predictions can you make based on what has happened so far, and what will happen? • Write a second theme paragraph (same rules/directions apply as in paragraph 2) • Identify and explain any literary devices (metaphor, simile, personification, etc.) used in the literature selection. YOU MUST LABEL EACH PARAGRAPH WITH A t-HJMBER AND LABEL/TITLE. SEE THE STUDENT SAMPLE FOR THIS FORMAT. Use common sense and evidence from the literature selection to form opinions and draw conclusions.
