RHS Trial of Sarracenia for a Sunny Windowsill
Introduction to Sarracenia
Sarracenia (common name pitcher plant) is a genus of 8 species of rhizomatous
perennial carnivorous plants. They range from fully hardy to frost hardy and are found
in nutrient-poor, acidic bogs from Northern Canada down to Florida in the USA. In
spring, Sarracenias have cup-shaped, nodding flowers. Sarracenias can be
herbaceous or evergreen and have pitchers that catch and digest insects to provide the
plant with the nutrients in needs to survive and grow. Some species have some noncarnivorous leaves called phyllodes. The pitchers and their lids often have attractive
markings and colouring.
Trial Location
The Trial was kindly hosted by RHS Gold Medal winning Matthew Soper at his
Hampshire Carnivorous Plants nursery near Southampton. www.hantsflytrap.com
Objectives
The objectives of the trial were:
 To identify Sarracenias which were:
o Easily grown by amateurs on a sunny windowsill or similar
o Attractive throughout most of the year with foliage (pitchers) of interesting
colour, patterns and form. Note: this objective was amended after the trial had
started as most Sarracenias need several months’ cold or cool winter rest (e.g. in
an unheated porch or conservatory) rather than being on an indoor, sunny
windowsill all year round.
 To clarify the nomenclature of the successful entries
 To recommend the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to entries found to be
outstanding for the above purpose
Judging
The Sarracenia Trials Assessment Forum members (8 of whom were members of The
Carnivorous Plant Society) assessed the trial from November 2013 until November
2015; in 2013 (5th November), 2014 (25th February, 8th April, 25th June, 27th August,
18th November) and in 2015 (18th February, 7th April, 30th July, 21st September,
24th November), recommending the Award of Garden Merit to plants using the following
criteria:
 Colour & contrast
 Venation and fenestration
 Form and shape of lid, mouth and pitcher
 Habit – height, proportion and stability
 Vigour and quality
 Number and effect of pitchers

Entries
There were 63 entries in this trial, submitted as 3-4 year old plants by breeders, nurseries
and individuals in the UK.
Cultivation
Entries were potted up into 10.5cm pots using growing media of 50% sphagnum based
peat and 50% perlite on arrival in October 2013. This was to ensure that all plants were
in the same sized pot and growing media for the trial.
The plants were trialled on a raised bench in an unheated glasshouse. The glasshouse
had full sun with light whitewashed shading through the summer months.
The pots were stood in 5-7.5 cm (2-3”) rainwater in spring, summer and autumn.
During winter they were stood on damp capillary matting and the glasshouse was not
heated.
Entries were cut back on 25th February and 18th November 2014 and on 18th February
2015 to remove any dead material. This was to reduce the risk of dieback from downy
mildew. This exercise was done as follows:
 The pitchers were carefully cut so as to only remove the dead (brown) material,
whether this be the entire pitcher or just the tip of the cap
 The phyllodes (non-carnivorous leaves) were not cut back if the tips were brown
 As the flowering shoots had not yet grown very tall, it was agreed that they
would be left in place for the time being. The trial host cut them back a couple of
weeks' later when they were around 5 cm (2") tall. If they had been cut back
when they were shorter than this, botrytis could have developed, worked its way
down the stem and caused the crown of the plant to rot.
The largest plant of each entry was re-potted into a 1 litre container on 18th February
2015, the other 2 plants of each entry were left as they were in their original 10.5 cm
pots.
On 7th April 2015 any pitchers which had started to die back (or previously had their
tops removed) were removed completely, leaving only fully intact pitchers on the
plants.
Pest and Disease
During the course of the trial the systemic insecticide Admire (active ingredient
imidacloprid) was used as part of the nursery’s pest control system against aphids.
Plants of one entry (entry number 59, S. 'Manta Ray') had mealy bug on them when
they were received which had been particularly difficult to control. These were
quarantined and as the pests could not be cleared, the plants were not assessed as
part of the trial. The remainder of the trial plants remained pest and disease free.
Other Findings
Once the top end of the flower stem had bent over so the bud was in a nodding
position, the flower would take about a week to open.
Plant Name Corrected to S × moorei ‘Brooks’s Hybrid’
This plant was named after Brooks rather than Brook so there was the choice of either
Brooks’ or Brooks’s. RHS botanists followed the International Code of Nomenclature
for Cultivated Plants (8th ed) - Art. 35.13 where it states that for consistency we should
use ‘s . For example for Bowles we use Bowles’s e.g. - Anemone hupehensis
‘Bowles’s Pink’”

Recommended Care Guide for Growing Sarracenias at Home
Forum members recommended the following care and growing guide:
Spring / Summer
 Keep your plant in a dish / tray of rainwater so that the water level is ¼ of the
way up the pot. Top up the water level regularly as it is essential that the plant
is always stood in water. If rainwater is not available then distilled, de-ionised
or reverse osmosis water can be used instead. The use of tap water will kill
your plant if it contains any lime.
 In spring, take care not to damage the fragile emerging pitchers.
 For best growth, position your plant somewhere in full sun such as a south
facing windowsill or conservatory. It should be sited away from a radiator.
Ventilation such as an open window would benefit the plant but is not essential.
 Should your plant suffer from aphids, use your preferred method of aphid
control. If spraying, it is best to do this in the evening to prevent scorch. Use of
a systemic insecticide will not harm your plant.
 Your plant can always be put outside for a few days over the summer if you
don't think it's catching enough insects. Don't try to feed it yourself and never
apply fertiliser.
 Your plant can always be put outside over the summer if you wish.
Autumn / Winter
 Depending on the origin of the parent species, which ranges from Eastern
Canada to Florida, approximately towards the end of October, some of the
foliage will start to die back. Ones which originate from Florida can start to loose
pitchers earlier, even in August. This is the time to give your plants its winter
rest for about 2 to 3 months.
 Put it somewhere bright with a temperature below 7°C (4-5°C is ideal), such as
a cold greenhouse, a porch or outside. It is best to avoid prolonged frosts and
not let it get below -7°C.
 Cut off any dead foliage and, during the rest phase, just keep the plant damp
rather stood in water – sitting it on wet capillary matting is ideal.
 Depending on conditions normally towards the end of February your plant will
come back into growth and can be moved back to its sunny indoor spot and
stood in rainwater again.
Repotting
 If the sides of the plastic pot are distorted then your Sarracenia definitely needs
re-potting.
 The end of February is a good time to re-pot.
 A plastic pot should be always be used as a clay one may leach salts into the
compost.
 The recommended compost mix is 50 % sphagnum based peat and 50 %
perlite (vermiculite will break down too quickly). Other growing mediums are still
in the process of being trialled.

It was agreed that the AGM should not be given to this one entry (Sarracenia
psittacina typ 1 [trial entry 2]) but to the whole of Sarracenia psittacina var.
psittacina of which trial entry 2 was a part.

crimson with well distributed white spots. Numerous pitchers.
Description: Foliage: Colour: Yellow green 144C-D on younger pitcher base becoming
flushed and netted dark red 187A with white background on dorsal surface of semiclosed operculum, entrance to opening a small hole appearing as a stained glass
window at back with similar colouring to outer surface. Pubescence: Glabrous.
Inflorescence: Calyx: Outer small bracts and large tepals yellow green 151A flushed
moderate greyed red 180A, inner yellow green 145C flushed greener 144D in middle.

Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii AGM (H3) 2015
It was agreed that the AGM should not be given to this one entry of Sarracenia
purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii from Bay County, Florida, Cl1 (trial entry 15)
but to the whole of Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii of which trial entry
15 was a part.

Forum comments: Prostrate, rosette form with a glossy surface. Has a good mix of dark
purple and green inside with coarse, distinct, netted veins. Has grey-white downward
pointing hairs inside the pitchers. The rigid pitchers range from dark purple to lighter
purple, all with darker veins. Has small, dark red flowers. Survives the cold well as
native to Canada, and it is particularly important that it has a cold spell over winter.
Description: Foliage: Colour: Background colour of flange strong yellow green 144B,
strongly flushed and veined red184A, with stronger veins dark red 187A on outer
surface, but more defined within and flushed 185A in throat. Peristome moderate
purplish pink 185C. Pubescence: Outer pitcher hood thinly shortly hairy, with long

colouration. Lid is very pretty, extremely ruffled and well spotted with pale windows.

flecks 186A to almost white. Hood strongly veined 186C with almost white flushed pink

lovely colouration which really stands out. Green tube with a red belly. Broad cap
bleaches to white creamy white. Beautiful curving white lids with purple veins.

back of hood outer surface background white in younger pitcher and flushed deep red
purple 59B in older pitcher. Veins darker dark red 59A and extending down tube as well

elegant and some taller and very erect. Lovely contrast in the colour of the pitchers.

strong growing. Multi-crowning. Plenty of pitchers. Amazing cap, different one side to
the other. The back is well veined purple-red with white, the front is solid purple. Wavyedged fan shaped lids. Large amount of nectar on the inside of the lid.
Description: Foliage: Colour: Flange and lower tube yellow green 144A to C in flange
with faint veining and flange margin deep red 185A, but veining and reticulate latticing
only beginning behind hood and below peristome where paler yellow green144C grades
into white background except for some sinuses lined with thin border of green, white is

colour changes during its life. The older red-purple pitchers contrast well with the paler
younger pitchers. Nice having a combination of the pink pitchers with their veins

background and intricate red veining. Nice form and outstanding colouration. A worthy
plant for a windowsill. It is a very distinct looking cultivar.
Description: Foliage: Colour: Flange and lower stem yellow green 144A with infusion of
greyish red 176B along ribs and the flange margin, background colour grades into
moderate yellow 160/161A/B to below peristome where it become moderate reddish
brown 176B in older pitcher or white in younger overlain by a delicate network of
reticulate venation dark red 187A from below peristome throughout back of hood except
the older pitcher has a continuation of moderate reddish brown infusion with in the
