Have you seen the ‘Welcome’ signs around our school? These signs were
added to the school entrances last week and provided our staff, students
and families with a bright and warm welcome as they returned to school
for 2016.
Thank you to the caring and thoughtful children who made the signs. You
have helped to make everyone in the Stradbroke community feel
welcomed and excited about the 2016 school year.
ASSEMBLIES
This year the R-2 Assembly and Year 3-7 Assembly will be held on alternate
Fridays at 9am in Rehn Hall. The R-7 assembly held at the end of each term
will be at 11.30am.

SKOOLBAG APP
SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING AT STRADBROKE
At Stradbroke School we are
in our third year of working
within the Kids Matter
Framework.
There are 4
components that continue to
guide the teaching staff
through a deeper understanding about how to recognise,
address and then teach our students better ways to identify
and manage themselves, socially and emotionally.

SCHOOL & LESSON TIMES
The Stradbroke Skoolbag app is now available for parents to
download to your mobile devices. Please see school website
for instructions about how to do this. Skoolbag is a school to
parent communication tool and provides schools with an easy
way to communicate with parents. This app will be used to
share school news, newsletters, events calendar,
cancellations, school notices, school information, school
timetables, school documents and much more. No more lost
paper in school bags.

Social and emotional learning
Working with parents and caregivers
Helping children with mental health issues
During 2015, within the framework of Kids Matter, the
teaching staff worked through a process of choosing and then
investigating specific programs that we could start to
implement in 2016. The program that we very passionately
decided suited Stradbroke School is called PLAY IS THE WAY®.
From this year on, all teaching staff, SSOs and leadership staff
will be embedding the concepts and language associated with
this program with our students, in classrooms, in all specialist
Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment

subjects, in the yard and by all staff who work at Stradbroke
School.
“PLAY IS THE WAY® is a practical methodology for teaching
social and emotional skills using guided play, classroom
activities and an empowering language. It is a process that
gives primary schools a way to develop, improve and
entrench the personal and social capabilities of students.
PLAY IS THE WAY® is suitable for primary school children of
all ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds. No particular
sporting or athletic ability is required to successfully
participate”.
Wilson McCaskill – founder and owner of PLAY IS THE WAY®
On the Thursday before students came back to school, all
teaching staff, leadership and SSOs were inducted in the
concepts and language that are the foundation of PLAY IS
THE WAY®.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Classical Guitar
Due to the restructure of the Instrumental Music Program we
are unable to confirm if we have been allocated an extra
lesson for beginner students and therefore we have limited
positions in 2016. Letters have gone home today for six
successful students. Once confirmation is received we will
contact another six students. Unfortunately, due to the
limited positions some students will miss out this year. A
letter will be sent home as soon as confirmation is received.
STRADBROKE SPORTS TOPS
If your child has played any sport for Stradbroke and still has
their top, please return it to Mel in Student Services.
BASKETBALL REGISTRATIONS FOR SEASON 1
If your child is interested in playing Basketball, come into
Students Services and see Mel for a registration form.
CRICKET REGISTRATIONS FOR TERM 1 & 4 2016
If your child is interested in playing in the Cricket competition,
come into Students Services and see Mel for a registration
form.
SPORTS REGISTRATION NIGHT
During this first week of school, all classroom and specialist
teachers have had a strong focus on social and emotional
learning and have started implementing the concepts and
language of PLAY IS THE WAY®. For more information about
PLAY IS THE WAY® please visit the website,
https://www.playistheway.com.au.
For further information about this program at Stradbroke
School, I will be running two parent information workshops.
Please choose the time that most suits you (they are the
same workshop, repeated twice) and ring Anona or Kathy at
the front office on 8337 2861 to register to attend.

WEATHER POLICY
At Stradbroke we have a hot weather policy for days over
38°C. When the forecast maximum is temperature is over
35°C daily fitness will be before 10am. The temperature is
checked on the Bureau of Meteorology website just before
recess and lunch and if the temperature is 38°C or higher all
children remain in their classrooms for the recess and lunch
breaks.
STRADBROKE HIGH ACHEIVER
Congratulations to Emma Zbierski in K10 who got a place in
the DECD Primary School String Orchestra. We wish her all
the best.
Please come along the Stradbroke Sports Registration Night
th
held in Rehn Hall on Tuesday 9 February from 5:30-6:30.
This will give families an opportunity to sign up their children
for all sports offered throughout the year and ask questions
regarding the sports you are interested. It will also be an
opportunity to express your interest in being a team manager
or coach of one of the teams. Registrations are open for
netball, cricket and basketball. Seasons yet to start include
soccer, football and possibly cycling. School sport depends
heavily on the involvement of parents so we encourage you
to attend.
