Situation
Travelling out of Douglas along Peel Road towards Quarterbridge
roundabout turn left onto the New Castletown Road. Continue to the
Cooil roundabout taking the second exit heating south. Pass the Mount
Murray country club on the right hand side and continue through Santon.
This impressive stately home can be clearly identified on the left hand side
just before the Santon Motel. There are two gated entrances – the principal
entrance is on the main Santon Road and the secondary entrance is the
next left hand turn into Harbour Road.
History
Rather little is known about the history of this house. Ballavale was known
as Balnahowin until 1703. In 1820 the estate was advertised in the Manx
Advertiser for letting and described as ‘About 100 acres with mansion
house and offices’. Again in 1835 it was advertised in the Manx Sun for
letting. The property was expanded sometime between 1835 and 1843 by
Major David Stewart.
The house is on a terrace and the steep slope to the main garden level has
flights of steps and pathways. To judge purely on size some of the more
important trees must date from the period 1840-1870. These include a
number of large copper beech trees and Monterie pines.

Grounds
This magnificent estate sits on twenty six acres of beautiful grounds. As
previously mentioned there are two entrances – the main entrance has a
sweeping driveway through parkland of approximately ten acres leading to
the house. The secondary entrance opens on to a gravelled driveway
bordered by mature trees and shrubs. There is ample parking to the front
and side of the house.
The rear of the property has to be viewed to fully appreciate its beauty and
tranquillity. Firstly there is the formal garden of approximately ten acres
with a mixture of specimen trees and shrubs. An interesting feature is an
enormous rhododendron with beautiful red blooms rumoured to be the
largest in the UK. From here there is a subtle change of landscape – a
wooded glen with a meandering brook and open lawned areas. There are
patio and terraced sitting areas taking full advantage of the south facing
sun – ideal for entertaining and observing the natural birdlife.
