Introduction to Faith Matters
John Wesley provided Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury with The
Sunday Service of the Methodist in North America (Liturgical
Worship Guide) and a revision of the Church of England’s ThirtyNine Articles of Religion. It is in this spirit that NCCP presents
Faith Matters during the months of June and July. Our worship
services will be crafted in the form of the original 1784 Sunday
Service and we will examine what we believe and why it matters
by exploring some of the Articles of Religion. We invite you to join
us in person, online and encourage you to participate in at least
one Message Meetup during this time.
For each week, you will find Scripture, an Article of Religion and
questions for study. On page 23, you will find the order of
worship including prayers, creed and responses.

“Faith Matters: Sufficiency of Scriptures for Salvation”
SCRIPTURE READING: John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and
the Word was God. 2 The Word was with God in the beginning. 3
Everything came into being through the Word, and without the
Word nothing came into being. What came into being 4 through
the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people. 5 The
light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish
the light. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came as
a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him
everyone would believe in the light. 8 He himself wasn’t the light,
but his mission was to testify concerning the light. 9 The true
light that shines on all people was coming into the world. 10 The
light was in the world, and the world came into being through the
light, but the world didn’t recognize the light. 11 The light came
to his own people, and his own people didn’t welcome him. 12
But those who did welcome him, those who believed in his name,
he authorized to become God’s children, 13 born not from blood
nor from human desire or passion, but born from God. 14 The
Word became flesh and made his home among us. We have seen
his glory, glory like that of a father’s only son, full of grace and
truth.

We Believe:
The Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation; so
that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby,
is not to be required of any man that it should be believed as an
article of faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation.

“Faith Matters: Original Sin”
SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 6:5-8
The Lord saw that humanity had become thoroughly evil on the
earth and that every idea their minds thought up was always
completely evil. 6 The Lord regretted making human beings on
the earth, and he was heartbroken. 7 So the Lord said, “I will
wipe off of the land the human race that I’ve created: from
human beings to livestock to the crawling things to the birds in
the skies, because I regret I ever made them.” 8 But as for Noah,
the Lord approved of him.
We Believe:
Original sin standeth not in the following of Adam (as the
Pelagians do vainly talk), but it is the corruption of the nature of
every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam,
whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and of
his own nature inclined to evil, and that continually. (UM Article VII)

“Faith Matters: Free Will”
SCRIPTURE READING: Joshua 24:14-24
“So now, revere the Lord. Serve him honestly and faithfully. Put
aside the gods that your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates
and in Egypt and serve the Lord. 15 But if it seems wrong in your
opinion to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will
serve. Choose the gods whom your ancestors served beyond the
Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But
my family and I will serve the Lord.” 16 Then the people

answered, “God forbid that we ever leave the Lord to serve other
gods! 17 The Lord is our God. He is the one who brought us and
our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage. He has done these mighty signs in our sight. He has
protected us the whole way we’ve gone and in all the nations
through which we’ve passed. 18 The Lord has driven out all the
nations before us, including the Amorites who lived in the land.
We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.” 19 Then
Joshua said to the people, “You can’t serve the Lord, because he
is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He won’t forgive your rebellion
and your sins. 20 If you leave the Lord and serve foreign gods,
then he will turn around and do you harm and finish you off, in
spite of having done you good in the past.” 21 Then the people
said to Joshua, “No! The Lord is the one we will serve.” 22 So
Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves
that you have chosen to serve the Lord.” They said, “We are
witnesses!” 23 “So now put aside the foreign gods that are
among you. Focus your hearts on the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24
The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and
will obey him.”
We Believe:
The condition of man after the fall of Adam is such that he cannot
turn and prepare himself, by his own natural strength and works,
to faith, and calling upon God; wherefore we have no power to do
good works, pleasant and acceptable to God, without the grace of
God by Christ preventing us, that we may have a good will, and
working with us, when we have that good will. (UM Article VIII)

“Faith Matters: Justification”
SCRIPTURE READING: Romans 5:1-11
Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his
faithfulness, we have peace with our God through Jesus Christ. 2
We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand through
him, and we boast in the hope of God’s glory. 3 But not only that!
We even take pride in our problems, because we know that
trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance produces character, and
character produces hope. 5 This hope doesn’t put us to shame,
because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts
through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 6 While we
were still weak, at the right moment, Christ died for ungodly
people. 7 It isn’t often that someone will die for a righteous
person, though maybe someone might dare to die for a good
person. 8 But God shows his love for us, because while we were
still sinners Christ died for us. 9 So, now that we have been made
righteous by his blood, we can be even more certain that we will
be saved from God’s wrath through him. 10 If we were reconciled
to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies,
now that we have been reconciled, how much more certain is it
that we will be saved by his life? 11 And not only that: we even
take pride in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, the one through
whom we now have a restored relationship with God.

We Believe:
We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works
or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith, only, is a
most wholesome doctrine, and very full of comfort. (UM Article IX)

“Faith Matters: Sin After Justification”
SCRIPTURE READING: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21
So then, from this point on we won’t recognize people by human
standards. Even though we used to know Christ by human
standards, that isn’t how we know him now. 17 So then, if
anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The
old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived! 18
All of these new things are from God, who reconciled us to
himself through Christ and who gave us the ministry of
reconciliation. 19 In other words, God was reconciling the world
to himself through Christ, by not counting people’s sins against
them. He has trusted us with this message of reconciliation. 20
So we are ambassadors who represent Christ. God is negotiating
with you through us. We beg you as Christ’s representatives, “Be
reconciled to God!” 21 God caused the one who didn’t know sin to
be sin for our sake so that through him we could become the
righteousness of God.
We Believe:
Not every sin willingly committed after justification is the sin
against the Holy Ghost, and unpardonable. Wherefore, the grant
of repentance is not to be denied to such as fall into sin after
justification. After we have received the Holy Ghost, we may
depart from grace given, and fall into sin, and, by the grace of
God, rise again and amend our lives. And therefore they are to be

“Faith Matters: Inward and Outward Holiness”
SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Peter 1:13-25
Therefore, once you have your minds ready for action and you
are thinking clearly, place your hope completely on the grace that
will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 Don’t be
conformed to your former desires, those that shaped you when
you were ignorant. But, as obedient children, 15 you must be
holy in every aspect of your lives, just as the one who called you
is holy. 16 It is written, You will be holy, because I am holy.17
Since you call upon a Father who judges all people according to
their actions without favoritism, you should conduct yourselves
with reverence during the time of your dwelling in a strange land.
18 Live in this way, knowing that you were not liberated by
perishable things like silver or gold from the empty lifestyle you
inherited from your ancestors. 19 Instead, you were liberated by
the precious blood of Christ, like that of a flawless, spotless lamb.
20 Christ was chosen before the creation of the world, but was
only revealed at the end of time. This was done for you, 21 who
through Christ are faithful to the God who raised him from the
dead and gave him glory. So now, your faith and hope should rest
in God. 22 As you set yourselves apart by your obedience to the
truth so that you might have genuine affection for your fellow
believers, love each other deeply and earnestly. 23 Do this
because you have been given new birth—not from the type of
seed that decays but from seed that doesn’t. This seed is God’s
life-giving and enduring word. 24 Thus, All human life on the
earth is like grass, and all human glory is like a flower in a field.
The grass dries up and its flower falls off, 25 but the Lord’s word

endures forever. This is the word that was proclaimed to you as
good news.
We Believe:
John Wesley’s common phrase “inward and outward holiness”
emphasized the essential link between heart holiness and holy
living. Referring to 1 Peter 1:15, Wesley writes, “perfection is
another name for universal holiness – inward and outward
righteousness – holiness of life arising from holiness of heart” ….
God works in the Christian to produce “both inward and outward
holiness.” The Holy Spirit strengthens our will so as to produce
“every good desire, whether relating to our tempers, words, or
actions, to inward and outward holiness” ….
First Pet 1:15 instructs us, “as he who called you is holy, be holy
yourselves in all your conduct.” No dimension of life, from our
attitudes and sexuality to our use of money and care of the earth,
fall outside the scope of holy living. We are to have the mind of
Christ (Phil 2:5), walking just as Jesus walked (1 John 2:6).

“Faith Matters: Holy Spirit”
SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 37:1-14
The Lord’s power overcame me, and while I was in the Lord’s
spirit, he led me out and set me down in the middle of a certain
valley. It was full of bones. 2 He led me through them all around,
and I saw that there were a great many of them on the valley
floor, and they were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Human one, can
these bones live again?” I said, “Lord God, only you know.” 4 He
said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, Dry
bones, hear the Lord’s word! 5 The Lord God proclaims to these
bones: I am about to put breath in you, and you will live again. 6

skin. When I put breath in you, and you come to life, you will
know that I am the Lord.” 7 I prophesied just as I was
commanded. There was a great noise as I was prophesying, then
a great quaking, and the bones came together, bone by bone. 8
When I looked, suddenly there were sinews on them. The flesh
appeared, and then they were covered over with skin. But there
was still no breath in them. 9 He said to me, “Prophesy to the
breath; prophesy, human one! Say to the breath, The Lord God
proclaims: Come from the four winds, breath! Breathe into these
dead bodies and let them live.” 10 I prophesied just as he
commanded me. When the breath entered them, they came to
life and stood on their feet, an extraordinarily large company. 11
He said to me, “Human one, these bones are the entire house of
Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has
perished. We are completely finished.’ 12 So now, prophesy and
say to them, The Lord God proclaims: I’m opening your graves! I
will raise you up from your graves, my people, and I will bring
you to Israel’s fertile land. 13 You will know that I am the Lord,
when I open your graves and raise you up from your graves, my
people. 14 I will put my breath in you, and you will live. I will
plant you on your fertile land, and you will know that I am the
Lord. I’ve spoken, and I will do it. This is what the Lord says.”

“Faith Matters: Good Works”
SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Timothy 6:11-19
But as for you, man of God, run away from all these things.
Instead, pursue righteousness, holy living, faithfulness, love,
endurance, and gentleness. 12 Compete in the good fight of faith.
Grab hold of eternal life—you were called to it, and you made a
good confession of it in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I
command you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things,
and Christ Jesus, who made the good confession when testifying
before Pontius Pilate. 14 Obey this order without fault or failure
until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 The timing of
this appearance is revealed by God alone, who is the blessed and
only master, the King of kings and Lord of lords. 16 He alone has
immortality and lives in light that no one can come near. No
human being has ever seen or is able to see him. Honor and
eternal power belong to him. Amen. 17 Tell people who are rich
at this time not to become egotistical and not to place their hope
on their finances, which are uncertain. Instead, they need to hope
in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment. 18 Tell
them to do good, to be rich in the good things they do, to be
generous, and to share with others. 19 When they do these
things, they will save a treasure for themselves that is a good
foundation for the future. That way they can take hold of what is
truly life.

Although good works, which are the fruits of faith, and follow

“Faith Matters: Sacraments”
SCRIPTURE READING: Ephesians 4:1-16
Therefore, as a prisoner for the Lord, I encourage you to live as
people worthy of the call you received from God. 2 Conduct
yourselves with all humility, gentleness, and patience. Accept
each other with love, 3 and make an effort to preserve the unity
of the Spirit with the peace that ties you together. 4 You are one
body and one spirit, just as God also called you in one hope. 5
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 and one God and
Father of all, who is over all, through all, and in all. 7 God has
given his grace to each one of us measured out by the gift that is
given by Christ. 8 That’s why scripture says, When he climbed up
to the heights, he captured prisoners, and he gave gifts to
people. 9 What does the phrase “he climbed up” mean if it
doesn’t mean that he had first gone down into the lower regions,
the earth? 10 The one who went down is the same one who
climbed up above all the heavens so that he might fill everything.
11 He gave some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and
some pastors and teachers. 12 His purpose was to equip God’s
people for the work of serving and building up the body of Christ
13 until we all reach the unity of faith and knowledge of God’s
Son. God’s goal is for us to become mature adults—to be fully
grown, measured by the standard of the fullness of Christ. 14 As
a result, we aren’t supposed to be infants any longer who can be
tossed and blown around by every wind that comes from teaching

with deceitful scheming and the tricks people play to deliberately
mislead others. 15 Instead, by speaking the truth with love, let’s
grow in every way into Christ, 16 who is the head. The whole
body grows from him, as it is joined and held together by all the
supporting ligaments. The body makes itself grow in that it builds
itself up with love as each one does its part.
We Believe:
Sacraments ordained of Christ are not only badges or tokens of
Christian men's profession, but rather they are certain signs of
grace, and God's good will toward us, by which he doth work
invisibly in us, and doth not only quicken, but also strengthen and
confirm, our faith in him.
There are two Sacraments ordained of Christ our Lord in the
Gospel; that is to say, Baptism and the Supper of the Lord.
Those five commonly called sacraments, that is to say,
confirmation, penance, orders, matrimony, and extreme unction,
are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel; being such
as have partly grown out of the corrupt following of the apostles,
and partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures, but yet
have not the like nature of Baptism and the Lord's Supper,
because they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of
God.
The Sacraments were not ordained of Christ to be gazed upon, or
to be carried about; but that we should duly use them. And in
such only as worthily receive the same, they have a wholesome
effect or operation; but they that receive them unworthily,
purchase to themselves condemnation, as St. Paul saith. (UM Article

the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,

It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
You formed us in your image
and breathed into us the breath of life.
When we turned away, and our love failed,
your love remained steadfast.
You delivered us from captivity,
made covenant to be our sovereign God,
and spoke to us through the prophets.
And so,
with your people on earth
and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ.
Your Spirit anointed him
to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
and to announce that the time had come
when you would save your people.
He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection
you gave birth to your Church,
delivered us from slavery to sin and death,
and made with us a new covenant
by water and the Spirit.
When the Lord Jesus ascended,
he promised to be with us always,
in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit.

On the night in which he gave himself up for us,
he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread,
gave it to his disciples, and said:
"Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me."
When the supper was over, he took the cup,
gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:
"Drink from this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me."
And so,
in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ's offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,
and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may be for the world the body of Christ,
redeemed by his blood.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ,
one with each other,
and one in ministry to all the world,
until Christ comes in final victory
and we feast at his heavenly banquet.
Through your Son Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father,
now and forever. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER*
And now, with the confidence of children of God, let us pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
BREAKING THE BREAD
Because there is one loaf,
we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.
The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
GIVING THE BREAD AND CUP
The body of Christ, given for you. Amen.
The blood of Christ, given for you. Amen.
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which you have given yourself to us.
Grant that we may go into the world
in the strength of your Spirit,
to give ourselves for others,
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
