Emerging from the Bideawee Board’s strategic planning
process, we have honed our mission statement, which
now reads:
Bideawee’s mission is to be Greater New York’s
leader in rescuing, caring for, and placing homeless
cats and dogs with people who love them.
Turn your Holiday Party into a Bideawee Cuddle
Party
Back by popular demand, Donaldsons Subaru and
Bideawee present the return of the Holiday Cuddle
Dispatch on Monday, December 19th from 11-3. The
Cuddle Dispatch will be spreading holiday snuggles to
Long Island offices that are in need of some kitten and
puppy love. Corporations can apply in advance to have a
Subaru Forester filled with Bideawee adoptable puppies
and kittens visit your office for a much-needed cuddle
break. For a charitable donation, your company can spend
up to a half hour getting cuddles and kisses from a
Bideawee companion animal. Space is limited, so schedule
your cuddle time today.
A Manhattan Senior Center Gets a Surprise Visit
On October 18th, Bideawee and Business Insider made a
special trip to Manhattan's Hudson Guild Senior Center
with adoptable puppy, Gregory. The trip showcased
Bideawee's Pet Therapy Progam, which allows pet parents
to certify their animals so they can take them to centers
like Hudson Guild-- as well as hospitals, schools and
nursing homes-- to provide comfort and companionship to
residents and guests.
The seniors couldn't wait to cuddle Gregory and he was
more than happy to oblige. Everyone asked when we
would be coming back and said that the visit made their
day. It made ours too! We often talk about the humananimal bond but there's nothing like seeing it in action.
Thank you to the staff at The Hudson Guild and to
Business Insider, for helping us highlight this program,
creating this beautiful video and bringing a smile to all of
our faces that day.
Bideawee Kicks off the Holiday with Annual Photos
with Santa Event
We’re going to go out on a limb and say that Santa must
love his stop at Bideawee, because it’s chock full of
"good" boys and girls! This holiday season, Bideawee
hosted its 10th annual Photos with Santa event at our
Westhampton Adoption Center. More than 50 families in
the community came out to get their pets’ photos taken.
Guests enjoyed holiday treats and helped raise more
than $600 for Bideawee’s homeless pets!
Bideawee is Proud to Participate in Home 4 the
Holidays Campaign
Bideawee is once again taking part in The Home 4 the
Holidays Campaign, which is a three‐month adoption drive
that encourages people to choose pet adoption over puppy
mills and backyard breeders, saving millions of homeless
pet lives. We are joining over 4,000 rescue groups and are
pledging to adopt out over 200 animals by the end of the
holiday season. This effort, which began in 1999, has
become the largest pet adoption campaign on record,
saving more than 10 million pets since its inception.
Bideawee joined The Helen Woodward Animal Center to
kick off the campaign on October 5th by ringing the
opening bell at Nasdaq! Consider bringing home a fourlegged friend this holiday season.
Q&A WITH OUR EXPERTS
Ask Dr. DiPaola, DVM
Dr. Jeri DiPaola has been a Veterinarian at the Animal Hospital
at Bideawee in Westhampton since 2007. She currently holds
the position of Veterinary Medical Supervisor and oversees all
medical decisions at Bideawee's Westhampton hospital.
Q: Do I need to use flea and tick products on my pets
during the winter months?
Answer
Ask Mike Rueb, CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer)
Michael Rueb began his career at Bideawee in 2002, as an
adoption center associate in the Westhampton location.
With a
goal of getting hands-on experience to aid him in his pursuit of
becoming a veterinarian, Mike began working with the animals in a
behavior capacity, and thus altered his career path, becoming the
manager of behavior and training, followed by his current position
of Associate Director of Adoptions and Resident Care.
Q: My girlfriend and I are getting ready to adopt a dog
and we keep hearing about the "matchmaking process."
What is the most important thing to consider when
determining whether or not an animal is "the right
match?"
Answer
HAPPY TAILS
Macy - More of a Good Thing
by Adopter, Dana Coster
After two years with Penny, our first Bideawee puppy that
we adopted at 3.5 months old (previously Katie), we
decided it was time to gift her a little sister. We never
could have imagined the joy that our first fur baby would
bring into our lives, so why not return to the place that
gave us our perfect now 70 pound big baby. When Matt
saw little 19 pound Macy sitting calmly behind the glass
door with her oversized ears, it was love at first sight. He
called Dana, who was en route with big- sister-to-be
Penny, and told her to step on it before someone scooped
up Macy. There was no doubt that the two would get
along in their test interaction together, and they did just
that. Macy ran circles around Penny, slipping and sliding
all over the floor while Penny sat watching with a huge
smile on her face. The decision was easy and we brought
Macy back to her forever home.

PICK OF THE LITTER
Steve Gruber,
Matchmaker
Steve has been working at
Bideawee for five years. He
lives in Queens with his
dog Shadow, a gorgeous
German Shepherd and
Rhodesian Ridgeback mix,
whom he adopted from
Bideawee about 4 years
ago. In his free time,
Steve enjoys street hockey
and mostly spending time
with his wonderful dog!
Rita, a beautiful two-toned
sweetie, is an Australian
Cattle Dog mix and is 3
years old. Weighing only
36 pounds and already full
grown, she would be a
great companion for
anyone who rents an
apartment in the Big
Apple. She does have lots
of energy, so it would be
best if she went to a home
with someone as energetic
as she is and able to give
her the exercise that she
needs daily. Rita does not
like to share her food or
toys, so an experienced
companion who will allow
her the space she needs
when she is eating or
playing with her toys
would be best. Rita should
be supervised around kids
of all ages and should be
introduced slowly to other
dogs. In Bideawee, she did
not care much for the cats
around her but if you have
a kitty at home a slow
introduction would be best.
Rita is not housebroken
but is in training and
hopefully will be when she
is in her new home.
Overall she is a lovely girl
and she is extremely
loving and loves attention
as well as giving it back to
you. If you think you're the
one for her please come in
and meet Rita today.
Coral was rescued by a
Bideawee staff member
when she noticed the (then
pregnant) cat following her
through downtown
Brooklyn. On Halloween of
2010, Coral gave birth to
her kittens here at
Bideawee! Since then, her
babies were weaned and
have all been adopted.
Meanwhile, Coral has been
spayed and is waiting for
that special someone! This
7 year old is intelligent,
feisty and very confident;
in other words, she's a bit
of a diva! In addition,
Coral certainly has a social
and loving side to her,
which she more readily
displayed when she had
her kittens (but we still see
it from time to time)! She
will do best in a gentle and
experienced home. Coral
would prefer to be your
only pet, although she has
lived with other cats here
at Bideawee. Come
meet Coral today.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Volunteer, Joan Misa
I live on my own and work from home in my apartment
in Astoria where I could spend days and not see a single
soul. On top of that, I always had a family dog from the
time I was very young living in the Philippines, to moving
to the USA, and up until I moved to NYC 3.5 years ago.
Now, I live in a city where it is hard to own a pet, and I
live in an apartment where pets are not allowed. So,
volunteering allows me to be around dogs without owning
one, for now. Plus, I really love lending a helping hand
and supporting causes that I care about. With all of that
said, I decided to search for shelters in Manhattan that
needed volunteers to take care of dogs.

The Evolution of a
Speciest: How a
partisan "dog person"
came around to the
other side
A little over a year ago,
Bideawee's Director of
Communications confessed
that despite working in
animal welfare for over a
decade, she had never
been fond of cats. Today,
she shares her life with a
sassy black kitty who rules
the roost. How did this
happen? Read her story on
the Bideawee blog.

Tom Young has been a
Bideawee friend for many
years. A member of the
Board of Directors since
2015, Tom is an animal
lover who has supported a
feral cat colony in
Westhampton, providing
them with food, shelter
and TNR for over 20 years,
thus keeping the colony
healthy and stable. He is
pet parent to kittens from
the feral colony, including
the late Pasha, Machu,
Picchu, and Ulaan as well
as Aly and Layla, who
continue to share his
home. Recently, Tom
decided to include
Bideawee in his estate
plans by providing for a
bequest in his will. His
thoughtful gift makes him
a member of the Flora
Kibbe Society, named for
Bideawee’s founder who
was a pioneer in the
animal rescue movement.
This society was created to
recognize and honor the
hundreds of other
visionary supporters who
have ensured our future by
including Bideawee in their
estate plans. We
appreciate Tom’s
generosity, and we thank
him for improving the lives
of homeless animals for
years to come.
