Summer Reading Club 2008: Read All Over the Map Sub Theme: I’ve Been Reading on the Railroad Week Two Title: Hear the Whistle Blow!! Age: 3—5 years old Duration: 1 hour Submitted by: Cindy Burns, Fraser Valley Regional Library (Clearbrook Branch) Materials/Supplies: • Coloured paper • Scissors and tape • Felt marker • Photocopies of nametag trains, train pieces and train cars to cut out • Gluesticks and white glue • Train colouring sheets • Crayons • Cotton balls • Straws or chopsticks • Red, white and green construction paper Procedure: Introduction & Welcome: Explain to the children that the railroad in Canada runs from one coast to the other. At one time, this railroad was the only way people could travel across the country. What other ways do we have to travel now? NametagsPrint image on coloured paper, cut out copies of train and print the children’s names on the engine with a felt marker. Stick with tape to create nametags. Train image is in the resource section. Fingerplay: The TrainChoo, Choo, Choo (slide hands together) The train runs down the track (run fingers down arm) And then it runs right back (run fingers up arm) Fingerplay: Choo-Choo TrainThis is a choochoo train Bend arms at elbows Puffing down the track Rotate forearms in rhythm Now it’s going forward Rotate arms forward Now it’s going back Rotate arms backward Now the bell is ringing Pull pretend bell cord Now the whistle blows mouth and blow What a lot of noise it makes Cover ears with hands Everywhere it goes Stretch out arms Craft: Railroad Color Signal Flags Make flags using construction paper. Use 8 ½ x 11 construction paper. Tape one 8 ½” side onto chopsticks or staple the paper onto straws. Red = Stop White/yellow = Go Green = Go slowly - caution! Craft: Train Bookmark — Template is in the resource section • • • • • • Song: Print out the train template. If printing in black and white, print on coloured paper. Cut out template pieces. Adults may need to help with the cutting Glue face on front of train Glue smokestack onto the top. Glue a cotton ball to the smokestack for pretend smoke. Children can colour the cotton ball with gray or black felt. Glue wheels on the botton of the train Young children may have an easier time attaching the cars, cotton balls, etc. if they glue everything to a background piece of construction paper.
