Rockadelic 50s
Summary:
The hit variety show Timmy’s Talent is looking for a new hit act or they risk being canceled by the program's
producer. Timmy and his cohost hire talent scouts to interview various acts to find the act to save their show.
However, as the talent scouts audition the various acts they notice that each group is lacking an important
character trait for performers. Join the two talent scouts as they audition and meet prospective groups of
performers in hopes of saving their towns variety show.

Scene 1 (Opens on producer, Timmy Andrews, and Grace)
Timmy: (reading a script- rips it up and sighs)
Grace: What’s the word on this week's script?
Timmy: It's another wet rag. We are never going to save the show this
way.
Grace: I don't know what more we can do we only have one more
show or they will cancel the program.
Timmy: We can’t give up yet. There has to be some way to keep Timmy’s Variety Show running…
(Producer enters)
Eddie: Mr. Andrews, Ms. Winters. I am sure you have heard that your deadline to increase the shows
ratings ends next week. My advice to you is to pack up now. I highly doubt you can save this show;
it's just not selling any more.
Timmy: Ed you don’t understand. We are the show everyone knows they can turn into to hear the
most rockadelic music- Timmy’s Variety Show is where rockin’ roll lives and we have a duty to our
viewers to never let it die.
Grace: Ed we are not giving up when so many people are depending on us.
Eddie: The facts are the facts gang. The show ain’t selling. People are bored with the same old
show. You need to bring in something fresh, something kicking- or the show will not be around much
longer. (Exits)
Grace: What is the point of even looking for new talent. They’ve made up their minds… we are going
to be canceled.
Timmy: Aw come off it Grace. Ed can get over it, we will save this show. All we need to do is find a
radioactive act that will show everyone that rockin’ roll will never die.
Grace: Well if you are willing to give it a try… let’s give a call to the talent scout departement and see
if they can set up auditions around the town to dig up any unique talent.
Song 1: Rock n Roll is Here to Stay (Chorus, Timmy and Grace)
Chorus:
Rock, rock, rock, Oh baby, (x4)
Solo:
Rock 'n roll is here to stay,
It will never die
It was meant to be that way,
Though I don't know why
2
I don't care what people say,
Rock 'n roll is here to stay
(We don't care what people say, rock 'n roll is here to stay)
Chorus:
Rock 'n roll will always be
Our ticket to the end
It will go down in history,
Just you wait, my friend
Rock 'n roll will always be,
It'll go down in history
(Rock 'n roll will always be, it'll go down in history)
So come on,
Everybody rock (x5)
Now everybody rock 'n roll,
Everybody rock 'n roll (x4)
Solo:
Rock 'n roll is here to stay,
It will never die
It was meant to be that way,
Though I don't know why
I don't care what people say,
Rock 'n roll is here to stay

Chorus:
Rock 'n roll will always be
Our ticket to the end
It will go down in history,
Just you wait, my friend
Rock 'n roll will always be,
It'll go down in history
If you don't like rock 'n roll,
Think what you've been missin'
But if you like to bop and stroll,
Come on down and listen
Let's all start to have a ball,
Everybody rock 'n roll
Ah, oh baby, (x3)
3
ah, oh baby, rock!

Fred: Marcy! Get your nose out of those papers doll face we’ve got a gig to book.
Marcy: (confused) What are you talking about?
Fred: Mr. Timmy Andrews is in trouble. The suits in his office are threatening to shut down their show
if they cannot get a rockin’ new act on the show.
Marcy: Well what are you waiting for? (frantic) Let’s start calling the press.

The faster my money goes.

Scene 3
(Timmy and Grace are on stage; Timmy turns off a radio. Fred and Marcy enter carrying briefcases/
clipboards)
Fred: Mr. Andrews, a pleasure as always
Timmy: Ah Fred, and Marcy. Thank you guys for accepting the job. I heard the announcement you
put on the radio. Auditions are tonight right?
Marcy: That is correct Mr. Andrews. We will be staying up all night trying to find the most hip act for
you.
5
Grace: Tune in to this gang, if we can’t find a rockadelic act by tonight we will not have a show come
tomorrow.
Timmy: We are looking for something that is rockin’ but different from what we are used to. It has to
be a group that gets along and shows promise.
Grace: Yes, we need folks that are going to get America to fall in love with them . They need to be
full of ideas and be able to persevere through the hard times.
Marcy: Got it ace.
Fred: You can count on us Mr. Andrews, Mrs. Winters. We will find the act you need.
-------------(Malt shop- audition table is set up with chairs for the talent scouts. Fred and Marcy walk onto the set)
Fred: (energized) Wow! What a great turn out! There has to be at least one group with an act that is
made in the shade.
Marcy: (exhausted) This is going to take all night Fred.
Fred: We just need to keep up our energy levels Marc! We can totally make it through. We just need
lots of sugar.
Marcy: Maybell! (calls to a waitress off stage) Bring us a large chocolate and vanilla malt and keep
them coming.
Fred: Thats is the spirit we are going to keep it rockin’ all night long!

Scene 4
(Fred and Marcy are sitting up-stage at a table with papers in front of them.)
Fred: Okay our first act calls themselves the Berry Brothers..
Marcy: It says they’ve only got one hit song though… didn’t Mr. Andrew’s say he was looking for a
group that can bring lots of new material?
Fred: True dat doll face; but lets still give them the chance to show us what they have got cooking.
(yells towards off stage) The Berry Brothers!
(enter a country looking group of in two-toned matching suits)
Chuck: What’s buzzin cuzzin? This here is my crew of gents
Brother 1: We’s come up from Ville, Missouri
Fred: Nice to meet you. All the way from Missouri?
Brother 2: That’s right; we grew up in the backwoods.
Chuck: It was not an easy place to grow up in. It took a lot of work for us to jump the tracks and go
straight in life. But we’ve been singing around our parts since we were in high school.
Brother 3: We had to split from lots of old friends and family, but we knew we could make it big some
day.
Chuck: Then we came up with our hit song; everyone back home digs it and we know you cats will
to.
Marcy: Do you think you would be able to write more songs?
7
Brother 2: I can’t say for sure
Brother 1: .Chuck’s the big writer
Fred: The thing is boys, we need an act that will have more than one hit.
Chuck: I am sure I can write some more little diddies.
Fred: If you can that’d be great, but we cannot promise you anything for sure.
Brother 2: I dig it; well can we still show you our act?
Marcy: We would love to see what you have to offer.
Chuck: Alright then; get ready- we are about to pop the clutch on this place
Song 4: Johnny B Goode (Chorus and solos)
Solo:
Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood,
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play a guitar just like a ringing a bell.
Chorus:
Go Go
Go, Johnny, go, go (x4)
Johnny B. Goode
Solo:
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Or sit beneath the tree by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineers would see him sitting in the shade,
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made.
The people passing by, they would stop and say,
"Oh, my, but that little country boy could play!"
Chorus:
Go, Go, Go, Johnny, go, go (x4)
Johnny B. Goode
(Dance/guitar solo)
Solo:
8
His mother told him, "Someday you will be a man,
And you will be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down.
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying 'Johnny B. Goode tonight'."
Chorus:
Go, Go, Go, Johnny, go, go (x4)
Johnny B. Goode

Scene 5
(The Berry Brothers exit. Fred and Marcy are sitting up-stage at a table with papers in front of them)
Fred: That was a great song, but if it is the only one they have….
Marcy: I know, I know…
Fred: We have loads more acts to see. I just hope they are all as rockin’ The Berry Brothers (slurps
his milkshake)
Marcy: (looks at Fred in disgust) How did you finish your malt so quickly?
Fred: What can I say I love me a good chocolate malt? Excuse me! (Waves arm around trying to get
someone’s attention) Waitress!
Maybell: Hello, how can I help you?
Fred: Another chocolate malt please (Smiles and he hands his empty cup over)
Maybell: Of course (nervously takes cup- opens mouth to speak up but closes it. Sighs. Starts to
slowly walk away).
Marcy: Is something wrong Maybell?
Maybell: Well… I was just wondering if you had the time…
Fred: Stop the babble and tell us what's the word.
Maybell: My friend Heather and I would like to audition for Timmy’s Variety Show.
Marcy: Oh? I didn’t know you could sing Maybell?
Maybell: Oh yes, the girls at the shop and I like to sing to pass the time after closing. We didn’t want
to bother you, but as long as you are here already I figured that you wouldn't mind hearing us sing?
(Fred and Marcy look at each other and shrug)
Fred: Can’t hurt anyone. Are you two ready?
9
Maybell: Oh yes! Let me go get Heather.
(Maybell runs off stage and drags a reluctant Heather onto the stage)
Maybell: Oh, come on Heather… (whining)
Marcy: Is everything okay?
Maybell: Heather is very shy
Marcy: Will she be able to sing?
Maybell: Oh yes, you will won’t you Heather?
Heather: mmm...mmmm...mmmaybe
Fred: How do you ladies plan to sing on a television show if you are too nervous to sing in front of
us?
Maybell: Don’t light a fire, we can sing
Fred: If you say so….
Maybell: Just sit back and watch- you’ll see, right Heather?
Heather: Yeah…
Marcy: So what will you be singing for us tonight?
Heather: It is a song my Uncle Leon wrote… It's a little fast, we could use some help from everyone.
Fred: Let’s hear it then.

Scene 6
Fred: Wow, what a great act.
Marcy: If only they had written the song themselves; Mr. Andrew’s said that he wanted the act to be
able to write songs.
Fred: Let’s keep them in mind still.
Marcy: Indeed
Fred: So, next on the list is Eddie and the Mechanics. Mechanics? Well that is interesting, Mechanic
Singers… next!
(Eddie and the Mechanics enter)
Eddie: Hey Hipsters! The names Eddie and this is my crew.
Mechanic 1: Cool the motor Ed, we’re not your crew.
Mechanic 2: Yea well we’re not yours either
Eddie: Will you two stop acting silly; we need to do our act
Mechanic 2: Ah get over it Ed. You are the one that started this argument.
Fred: Uh, excuse me?
Mechanic 1: What’s the got you buzzing?
Fred: Are you guys here to perform or not?
Eddie: You bet. We’ve got an original song for you based on our latest hot rod.
Marcy: Well that is good, you wrote it?
Mechanic 2: You betcha Cookie
12
Mechanic 1: You didn’t write anything!
Mechanic 2: Cool it man I didn’t mean I wrote it.
Eddie: Hey! Stop acting like a bunch of ankle-biters we got a gig
Fred: Do you guys always fight like this?
Eddie & Mechanics: Not always….
Marcy: (Whispers to Fred) That's not good; we need a group that will cooperates with each other.
Fred: (Whisper) I agree, but still, we might as well hear their act.

There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy
And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears
Chorus:
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got) (x2)

Scene 7
Fred: It is a shame that the group cannot get along
Marcy: I know, they were very good. However, Mr. Andrew’s was very specific about the groups
needing to cooperate to ensure a great show.
Fred: It seems that every group is missing just one important character trait doesn’t it Marc?
Marcy: It does. I need more sugar.
Fred: Me too, Maybell another round of malts please! (Waves shake cup in the air)
Marcy: Our next group are called the Nuggets; they are a high school band from California.
Fred: Okay, bring them in.
Nugget 1: Hello there, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
Nugget 2: We are honored to be given this opportunity to perform for you.
Marcy: Oh wow, what young gentlemen you are.
Fred: Is it just the two of you? Your card stated that there were three of you.
Nugget 1: Well our lead singer got a little held up…
Nugget 2: He should be here any minute….
(Long pause. Everyone awkwardly stands looking around. Fred checks his watch)
14
Fred: Uhh… would you two just like to perform that…
Nugget 3: (comes in wearing an “I Love NY” shirt, and a tourist cup) Oh my gosh have you seen this
city? I was just on Broadway and there were so many lights and people. The King and I was playing,
and there was an advertisement that Rodgers and Hammerstein are going to be casting for a new
play next year- The Sound of Music. I got tickets to see the Yankees tomorrow too- this is the best trip
ever.
Nugget 1: Where have you been?
Nugget 2: This is our chance at making it big and you were playing the tourist?
Nugget 3: What? This could be our only chance at being on television; you have got to be more
responsible.
Fred: (clears throat) Are we ready now kids?
Nugget 3: Sure thing, let me just put my things down.
Nugget 2: We wrote this one based on a movie we saw once
Song 6: Ain't That a Shame

Scene 8
The Nuggets: Thank you, thank you very much (exit)
Fred: Well… that was interesting
Marcy: I don’t think they were all ready for the responsibility the job would require.
Fred: You are so right doll. Who is up next?
(enter two teens with nagging parents behind them)
Sammy: Okay, okay I get it mom
Ricky: Can you please stop?... We know what to do!
Mom: I just want you to make sure you are being polite to the talent agents dears
Dad: You guys need to make sure you have everything you need for your performance
Sammy: Jeez why are you such a germ
Ricky: Get with it keepers
(Parents exit)
Fred: (whispers) Yikes these two are divas
Marcy: (whispers) I can’t believe they speak to their parents like that; they need to learn some
respect.
Sammy: (addressing Fred & Marcy) Hello there cats, my name is Sammy and this is my brother…
Ricky: I’m Ricky, and we came up with a song based on our annoying life
Sammy: Yea, we got to thinking one day about what nags parents can be and the song came to us.
Ricky: All of our friends really like it so we know you will too.
16
Fred: (Whispers) yea… they definitely need to have more respect if they want to go into show
business.
Sammy: (Clears throat) Uh, do you mind. (To Ricky) It is so rude when people try to talk when
someone is performing.
Ricky: I dig that. Listen up.
Song 7: Yakety Yak
(Teens and chorus)

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash

Scene 9
Fred: Wow, I am glad those two are gone
Marcy: They can sing but they definitely need an attitude adjustment.
Fred: (Looking over the clipboard) sighs My goodness Marc we’ve been at this for hours and we
have not found one act that is radioactive.
Marcy: We still have a whole two pages of people signed up to audition…. I don't know how we are
going to make it through this.
Fred: There are not enough malts in this shop to make sure I make it through these auditions
Marcy: But Mr. Andrew’s and Miss Winters are counting on us; we need to find the perfect act to save
Timmy’s Variety Show.
Fred: (groans and tosses papers up in the air) it is hopeless
Enter Timmy and Grace
Timmy: Hey Fred, Marcy how is the search going
Fred: Mr. Andrew’s, sir, there have been some great performances but the people they are all odd
balls
Grace: What do you mean?
Marcy: They just don’t have the character traits it takes to be a good worker. We are trying, but it
seems like there is no one in this rag town to meet the standards for Timmy’s Variety Show.
Fred: I need to pile on the z’s and we are not even finished with auditions for the day.
Timmy: Don’t split just yet Fred; we’ll stay and help you guys out.
Grace: Yes, maybe some fresh eyes are all you need to get more energized.
Marcy: Don’t worry Grace we will find someone if it takes all night.
Timmy: I just hope they don’t cancel the show; we have all worked so hard to try to keep it running.
Grace: We just can’t give up is all. Who is next on the list
Marcy: No offence cats but we could use a moment to cool our motors.
18
Fred: I can dig that, I need a break from working.
Marcy: I am with you Fred
Fred: I just need to cut loose (tosses a coin in off stage) put on G17 will ya mack?
Song 8: Footloose
(Fred and chorus)
Solo:
I've been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours for what?
Oh, tell me what I got
I've got this feeling
That time's just holding me down
I'll hit the ceiling or else
I'll tear up this town
Chorus:
Now I gotta cut loose
Footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes
Please, Louise, pull me off of my knees
Jack, get back, come on before we crack
Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose
Solo:
You're playing so cool, obeying every rule
Dig a way down in your heart
You're burning yearning for some
Somebody to tell you that life ain't passing you by
I'm trying to tell you
It will if you don't even try
You'll get by if you'd only
Chorus:
Cut loose, footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes
Ooh-wee Marie shake it, shake it for me
Woah, Milo come on, come on let's go
Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose
Solo:
You got to turn me around and put your
Feet on the ground, now take the hold of all
Chorus:
Ah ah ah ah ah
Solo:
I'm turning you loose
19
Chorus:
Footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes
Please, Louise, pull me off of my knees
Jack, get back, come on before we crack
Lose your blues, everybody cut footloose (footloose) (x2)
Everybody cut, everybody cut (x4)
Footloose!

Ginger: Wow that was totally rockadelic
Louie: Those are some swell sounds mister
Ginger: Gee Louie I don’t know if we should even audition now.
Louie: You are right Ginger he was probably chosen for the show
Marcy: Are you here to audition?
Timmy: We are still looking for an act, you are welcome to audition.
Grace: What are your names?
Ginger: Oh well I am Ginger and this is my friend Louie.
Fred: And you two have an act for us to see.
Louie: Yea… Its just a song we wrote one day after watching Timmy’s Variety Show.
Ginger: We aren't expecting to get on the show but we still wanted to try our best and to share our
hard work with people who would appreciate it.
Marcy: We would love to hear what you’ve got.
Louie: Neato, alright dig this…
Song 9: Old Time Rockin’ Roll
(Louie, Ginger and chorus)
Solo:
Just take those old records off the shelf
I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
Chorus:
Don't try to take me to a disco
20
You'll never even get me out on the floor
In ten minutes I'll be late for the door
I like that old time rock'n' roll
Still like that old time rock'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
(Dance/guitar solo)
Solo:
Won't go to hear them play a tango
I'd rather hear some blues or funky old soul
There's only sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock 'n' roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I'm old-fashioned, say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
Chorus:
Still like that old time rock 'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
(x3)
Hey, still like that old time rock 'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
Still like that old time rock 'n' roll
Scene 11
Timmy: It is perfect!
Grace: This act will definitely save the show
Marcy: Thank goodness we’ve finally found it
Fred: And just in the knick of time it looks like…
(Ed enters)
Eddie: Well Mr. Andrews your time is up; if you can't show the network a new act than it is good bye
to Timmy’s Variety Show.
Timmy: Ed say hello to our new act Louie and Ginger. They will ensure that rockin’ roll will never die.
