MBBC boys soar to new heights with the MBBC 3Rs: research

The 3 Rs of MBBC:
helping all boys to soar to new heights
Research – acquiring knowledge. A leader is able to locate quickly
and digest the information he needs using both traditional and
technological skills. This is research and incorporates the crucial skills
of reading and writing as well as maths.
Reason – applying knowledge. Having knowledge is good, but a
leader can apply it to new or different circumstances. This requires
the development of higher order thinking skills such as analysis,
synthesis and evaluation. This ability will be essential for our boys
whose futures are likely to contain multiple career pathways.
Relationships – working together. A leader has a strong emotional
intelligence which allows them to work well with others. At MBBC we
have specific, class-based programs that develop in boys this ability to
build relationships.

Pastoral Care for Support and
Mentoring
MBBC has implemented a well-structured pastoral care
program, which includes peer support for all boys, and a
middle years program, which begins in Year 7.
The partnership between school and home is vital to
maximising outcomes for each boy. The College actively
encourages parents to be active participants in their
child’s education, both at school and to support the
learning process at home.

The MBBC Parents and Friends Association meets on
each term to discuss fund- and friend-raising activities.
Parents are encouraged to be involved.
Pastoral care forms the basis for the MBBC ‘family’,
and will benefit all students. Effective pastoral support
by teachers is critical to ensure that boys are making
progress toward their goals.
Effective Communication and Conflict
Resolution
Central to the broader curriculum, programs, such as You
Can Do It!, are implemented to develop effective and
positive communication and conflict resolution skills within
the boys – to deal with bullying clearly and assertively.
Unacceptable behaviour must be dealt with decisively
and firmly, and at MBBC we seek to assist our boys to
develop positive and supportive relationships with their
peers, their teachers and their families.

Primary School (P - 6)
The Preparatory (Prep) Year: A Boy’s First Year
nurture your
son in his
early years,
guiding him
toward a
future of
optimism
In Moreton Bay Boys’ College Preparatory Year, a
foundation is laid for a committed and capable student,
and a confident and disciplined adult.
The ‘Prep Year’ Program is delivered in an environment
which promotes co-operation, sharing, positive
relationships and teamwork. Learning is supported by
a teacher and full time teacher assistant: committed
to assisting our young people to ‘improve themselves’
rather than ‘beat their competitors’.
The Prep Year operates five days a week, ensuring the
boys are well prepared for the expectations of Year 1.
The Prep Year Curriculum is built around five key areas:
1. Social and Personal Learning
2. Health and Physical Learning
3. Language Learning and Communication
4. Early Mathematical Understandings
and hope.
5. Active Learning Processes
Years 1 - 6
In our Primary program, we seek to foster a positive
attitude to learning in all our boys. We realise that a
sound basis and eagerness for learning in Primary will
assist the boys’ development and achievement in their
later school and adult years.
The Primary School curriculum has distinct
developmental phases with a movement towards greater
specialist teacher involvement from Year 5 to cater for
the changing needs of the boys as they mature in their
later primary years.
The Year 1-6 learning areas are:
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Studies of Society and the Environment
• Information, communication & design
technology
• Cultural, visual and performing arts
• Health & physical education, sport & recreation
• Religious education, personal development &

Moreton Bay Boys’ College
Developing a well rounded young man…
Middle School (7 - 9)
During the middle school years, boys undergo rapid
and acute physical, social, and personal changes in their
growth. They face new academic demands that quite
often do not coincide with their intellectual or mental
development.
Therefore, while intellectual development is, and must
continue to be, the basic responsibility of the middle
school, the education and nurture of boys in their
adolescent years has to be an integrated strategy that
provides a balance between academic rigour and the
personal needs of boys at this time. A boy’s readiness
to achieve academically is heavily influenced by his
personal security and self-esteem.
To be most effective, the educational experiences
provided for a particular group of boys must match
the nature of that group, be in concert with how they
learn best, and assist them in dealing with the tasks that
growing up presents at that age level. A middle school
program recognises the great diversity of maturation
that characterises this age level and neither plans one
lesson for all, nor expects uniform results. Differentiated
instruction becomes a necessity in order for all students
to improve their academic performances.
The middle years of schooling at MBBC, will seek to fulfil
the broad and critically important responsibilities for
the boys by integrating into school classes and activities
knowledge acquisition, mastery of basic skills, and
personal development. Their success in so doing will have
a major impact not only on the individual boys concerned
but also on the success of the group as a whole.
A common core curriculum has been developed

Year 10 is a transition year for boys to assist them
to prepare for their Senior course of study and
the Queensland Certificate of Education. This new
qualification is highly flexible and allows boys to
progress down multiple learning pathways to achieve
their Senior Statement.
MBBC students will be given the opportunity to
experience a ‘taster’ year in Year 10. The boys will be
involved in a course of study that includes core subjects
(English, Mathematics, Science & SOSE) and elective
subjects (based upon the interests and needs of the
boys). All subjects studied in Year 10 will be reflective of
the types of curriculum and assessment practices related
to the given subject. This will provide the boys with the
opportunity to get a taste of what that subject may be
like to study at a senior level. At the same time all boys
will be given the opportunity to study vital academic
areas which will enhance their future study potential
and school to work transition. In this unique curriculum
experience Year 10 is a significant and productive part of
the senior years of schooling.
