“Tennessee already has

law that applies to Tennessee drivers,” Revenue
Commissioner
David
Gerregano said. “The goal
of this new system is to efficiently and effectively
check compliance in order
to reduce the number of
motorists who lack insurance or another form of financial responsibility.”
The James Lee Atwood, Jr. Law was passed
during the 2015 legislative
session in order to help reduce the overall number
of uninsured drivers on
Tennessee roadways. As
part of this law, the Tennessee Department of
Revenue developed an insurance verification program which will be

Under the program, all

tomobile liability policies
in Tennessee must register
with the Department and
provide required policy information. The state’s new
insurance verification system will check the policies
provided by the insurance
companies against all currently registered VINs in
Tennessee. Rather than
checking for insurance
coverage at the time of
registration renewal, the
system will verify insurance coverage on a continual basis throughout the
year.
If the system is unable
to confirm insurance coverage for a vehicle, a notice
will be sent to that owner
directing him or her to a
website where he or she
can provide proof of minimum liability insurance or
other means of financial

the initial notice, subsequent notices will follow.
Failure to comply with the
notices could result in
fines and eventual vehicle
registration suspension.

an assailant who opened
fire at a crowded Istanbul
nightclub during New

39 persons and wounding
close to 70 others in what
investigators called a terrorist attack. The attacker was armed with a

killed a policeman and a
civilian before entering
the club and opening fire.
At least 23 persons died
and 17 others went missing after a ferry caught fire
off the coast of Indonesia’s capital on Sunday,
gutting half the ship and
prompting the transport
of 22 injured victims to
hospitals in Jakarta. Witnesses said the blaze

North Korean tyrant
leader Kim Jong Un
hinted on Saturday that
Pyongyang might ring in
the new year with another
bang – the test-launch of
an intercontinental ballistic missile. In his annual
address, Kim said that
after exploding what was
the country’s first hydrogen bomb, preparations
for the launch of an international ballistic missile
had “reached the final
stage.”
CBS News on Friday
reported that Presidentelect Donald Trump had
applauded Russian President Vladimir, describing
him as “very smart” after
Putin said he would not
retaliate following U.S.
sanctions ordered by the
Obama administrations.
Trump’s tweet came a day
after outgoing president
Barack Obama put forth a
string of punitive measures against Moscow for
its alleged cyberhacking
but unproven attempts to
undermine the presidential election.
CBS News on Saturday
continued to defend
Obama, saying the chief
executive would return
from a holiday vacation in
Hawaii on Wednesday and
appear on Capitol Hill and
meet with Democrats in
an attempt to save Obamacare. Media strategists
said one of Obama’s
biggest worries in the final
days of his presidency was
that Obamacare would be

Democrats continued
on Friday to criticize new
legislation proposed by
House Speaker Paul Ryan,
which would fine lawmakers for taking photos or
videos from the House
floor, calling it a “modern
day and unconstitutional
gag rule.” Ranking minority party members said the
GOP House leadership
was authorizing “speech
police” to Keep Democrats from voicing opposition.
On New Years Eve and
New Year’s Day, President
Obama spent the final
hours of 2016 golfing in
Hawaii with buddies Darren Harrington, Mike
Ramos, and Bobby Titcomb, attending a luau at
Titcomb’s home on the
North Shore. He kicked
off the day with a gym
workout, went to the
beach, and ate lunch at a
trendy Honolulu restaurant, followed by dinner at
hotspot Mahina & Suns.

Sean Spicer said on ABC’s
“This Week” on Sunday
that President-elect Donald Trump would be repealing Obama’s executive
actions in his first day in
office, dissolving the nonlegislative passed pen-andink moves of the outgoing
chief executive that had
“hampered both economic growth and job creation.” Spicer did not
specify which actions
Trump would repeal.
CNN political commentator Van Jones said
on Sunday the Clinton
family’s grip on the Democratic Party had come to
an end and it was time for
a new generation of leadership to head the party.
Jones said the idea that
the party would be moderate and “throw blacks

tary of state’s presidential
loss on a “perfect storm”
of factors, saying the team
could have run a better
campaign and listened
more to voters. Karen
Finney said Clinton could
have done better on promoting her vision for the
economy, adding the
Democratic Party had “a
lot of work to do going
forward.”
In college football, the
NCAA national championship will go to either Alabama or Clemson,
following the Crimson
Tide’s 24-7 victory over
Washington in the Peach
Bowl on Friday and the
Tiger’s 31-0 demolishment
of Ohio State in the Fiesta
Bowl, the first shutout of
coach Urban Meyer in his
collegiate career. The topranked Tide will face No. 3
Clemson in a do-over of
last season’s championship
game, a 45-40 thriller won
by Bama.
And on Sunday, unknown vandals “modified”
the famed Hollywood sign
in Los Angles to read
“Hollyweed.” The sign
was visibly changed and
captured by cameras but
was not the first time it
had been targeted by
pranksters, its first coming
in 1976, when it was altered to Hollyweed, again
in 1987 to read “Ollywood”
in protest of Colonel
Oliver North and the
Iran-Contra affair, and
again in 1990 to “Oil War,”
signifying disagreement
with the first Gulf War.
