FAREWELL to
MSGR. JOSE L. HERNANDO
After more than 20 years with us
(November 1993 to July 2014), our
Pastor Msgr. Jose L. Hernando is retiring, and
will leave St. Agnes parish at the beginning of
July. He will celebrate a special farewell Mass
on Saturday, June 7th at 7:00 p.m., followed by a
reception at the St. Agnes Academy
Auditorium. All are invited to attend.
AFTER A WHILE
After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts and
presents aren’t promises

not the grief of a child

RETIREMENT O JUBILATION?
Matthew 28: 16-20
“Go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them…and
teaching them all that I have
commanded you.”
The Ascension of the Lord is
not the marking of a departure
but the celebration of a
presence: Matthew’s Gospel
begins with the promise of the
Emmanuel –God is with us; it
concludes with the promise of
the Risen Christ, I am with you
always, even to the end of time.
Pastor’s Notes
The Bible says that “there is an appointed time for
everything”: time to work and time to rest. I think
that, after turning 75 years of age, and 52 of those as a
priest, the time has come to switch activities. My idea is
“to keep myself occupied, but not preoccupied”. It is
time to enjoy a change, mingled with pastoral work, but
without the pressures and administrative concerns that
are always present in the parish.
I think that, at my age, it is time to pass on leadership to the next generation.
It is time to enjoy from a distance the pleasure and peace that comes from
seeing the fruits that have been reaped during these twenty years spent with
you at Saint Agnes. In this period, we have together created and sustained a
diverse, but always united, community. I appreciate all the support and
cooperation that you have constantly given me.
Together we have created various ministries that are a source of growth in
the faith and Christian commitment. In them, there is room and space for
everyone. This is how we have been able to transform this community into a
great family. Together, in these 20 years, we have built the majority of the
facilities where 500 children are being educated at Saint Agnes Academy.
And there are some 550 more who attend Catechism classes every week. In
these facilities there is also room for the different ministries to meet. There
are no outstanding debts from any of the contructions that have taken
place, and the economy is well balanced thanks to the responsible
stewardship of a group of Saint Agnes parishioners who demonstrate their
generosity in various ways.
With a spirit of wisdom and
insight to know him clearly, we
can discover Christ’s presence
at every turn of our lives’
journeys to His final return at
the end of time. Our own
Church “works” only because
of the presence of Jesus.
The Saint Agnes campus as a whole is beautiful, with its buildings, gardens,

Mateo 28, 16-20
“Vayan y hagan discípulos míos a
todos los pueblos, bautizándoles y
enseñándoles todo lo que yo les he
mandado”.
La Ascensión del Señor, cuya
fiesta celebramos hoy, no marca
una partida, sino que es la
celebración de una presencia. El
Evangelio de Mateo comienza con
la promesa del Emmanuel, “el Dios
con nosotros” y concluye con la
promesa del Cristo Resucitado:
“Yo estaré con Ustedes siempre,
hasta el final de los tiempos”.
Llenos de sabiduría y profundidad
interior para conocer claramente,
nosotros podemos descubrir la
presencia de Cristo en cada paso
de nuestro peregrinar hacia el
retorno final de los tiempos.
Nuestra Iglesia puede funcionar
solamente gracias a la presencia de
Jesús.
Jesús es la razón de nuestra
pertenencia a esta Iglesia: su
presencia nos une en la comunidad
de fe. No es una presencia
abstracta o distante, Cristo es el
centro de nuestra Iglesia en la
Palabra, en los sacramentos, en
cada gesto de generosidad y en
cada acto de compasión que
nosotros realizamos o experimentamos.
Con la Ascensión de Jesús, el
tiempo de la Iglesia ha comenzado.
Es el tiempo del Espíritu Santo. Es
el tiempo para ser testigos y
evangelizadores, comunicando a
otros las Buenas Noticias del Reino
de Dios.
¿RETIRARSE O JUBILARSE?
Dice la Biblia que “todo tiene su tiempo y su
momento”, tiempo de trabajar y tiempo de
descansar. Pienso que, después de cumplir 75 años de
edad y de tener 52 años de sacerdote, ha llegado el
momento de cambiar de actividades. Mi idea es

“mantenerme ocupado, pero no preocupado”. Ha

mezclado con trabajo pastoral, pero sin las presiones
y las preocupaciones administrativas, que siempre hay en las parroquias.
A mi edad pienso que es tiempo para pasar mi liderazgo a la siguiente
generación. Es tiempo de disfrutar en la distancia del gozo y la
tranquilidad que da el ver los frutos cosechados en estos 20 años que pasé
con Ustedes en St. Agnes. En este tiempo, juntos hemos logrado crear y
mantener una comunidad diversa, pero siempre unida. Les agradezco
todo el apoyo y cooperación que siempre me dieron.
En este tiempo, juntos hemos creado una serie de ministerios, que son
fuente de crecimiento en la fe y compromiso cristiano. En ellos hay cabida
y lugar para todos. Sólo así hemos podido convertir esta comunidad en
una gran familia. Juntos en estos 20 años construimos la mayoría de los
edificios, en los que diariamente son educados 500 niños en St. Agnes
Academy. Y tenemos unos 550 niños más que atienden cada semana a las
clases de Catecismo. En estos edificios también hay lugar para reunirse
los distintos ministerios. No hay ninguna deuda sobre todo lo que se ha
hecho y la economía está bien balanceada, gracias a la
responsabilidad de un grupo de feligreses de St. Agnes, que muestran su
generosidad en distintas formas.
Todo el campo de St. Agnes es bello con sus edificios, sus jardines, sus
aparcamientos, pero lo mejor es el amor y la alegría que se sienten en
contacto con el pueblo. Sigan unidos y felices amando a nuestro PadreDios y a los hermanos/as. Sigan creciendo en unidad y atención a todos: a
los niños, a los jóvenes, a las familias, a los enfermos, a las empleadas
domésticas, a los que están tristes, a los que buscan a Dios…Que la
presencia de Cristo en la Eucaristía sea prioridad en la espiritualidad de
cada feligrés.
Me gusta la palabra jubilarse más que la de retirarse. Jubilación viene de
júbilo. Me siento contento y alegre de haber dado 52 años de servicio
pastoral a Dios y a su pueblo. Y la alegría se prolonga al sentir que tengo
salud para este cambio, que al mismo tiempo que es descanso también es
acción. Mi lema para esta nueva etapa es: “Rest, but not rust”, que
quiere decir: “Descansar sí, pero sin oxidarme”. Quiero seguir
desarrollando los talentos que Dios me ha dado. No quiero que se oxide
mi cuerpo, por eso trataré de hacer ejercicio físico y mantendré mi
mente alerta y en acción, sin descuidar mi relación con Dios, a través de
la oración. Que Dios les bendiga y les proteja. Hasta la vista.

estar más de 20 años con
nosotros (Noviembre 1993 Julio 2014), se retira y deja la parroquia de St.
Agnes a primeros del mes de julio. Celebrará
una misa especial de despedida el sábado, día 7
de junio a las 7:00 P.M., seguida de una
recepción en el Auditorium de St. Agnes

YO ESTOY CON USTEDES
La fiesta de la Ascensión celebra el triunfo
del Señor, una nueva etapa en la vida de los
discípulos. Ahora son ellos los que tienen que
asumir la misión de Jesús.
Hablarán lenguas nuevas. Nacerá un Nuevo
estilo de vida, que fomentará la fraternidad, la
igualdad y dignidad del hombre.
Jesús envía a sus amigos al mundo entero para
que sigan adelante con su misma misión: que
todas las personas tengan vida, y vida en
abundancia.
“GRACIAS SEÑOR POR SER COMO ERES”
Dios es tan “asombroso” que hemos perdido la
facultad de asombrarnos. Dios es tan
“paciente” que hemos perdido el empeño de
apurarnos. Es tan “bueno” que nos hemos
puesto a descansar en su misericordia. Es tan
“confiable”, que le dejamos nuestros
problemas… y nos olvidamos de resolverlos. Es
tan “perdonador” que rompemos a cada rato
la promesa de no ofenderlo. Es tan “generoso”
que nunca nos conformamos con lo que nos da.
Es tan “a uxiliador” que a veces olvidamos cual
es la línea recta. Dios es tan “incomprensible”
que hasta su empeño por salvarnos nos parece
cosa natural. Es tan “delicado” que, cuando
nos usa, nos parece que le hemos hecho un gran
favor. Es tan “elocuente” que sus palabras
vuelan sobre nuestras vidas y para retenernos
usa el idioma de la gracia. Dios es tan Dios...
que por un lado, nos da la libertad y por otro
nos está esperando su misericordia . Gracias,
Señor, por ser como eres y amarnos como nos
amas! ¡Gracias Señor!
