Greetings!
Summer is an amazing time at Norfolk Public Library
(NPL). This year’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) is all
about Reading by Design, inspired by artists, authors,
builders, illustrators, architects and everyone who helps
to make this world an exciting and dynamic, livable and
accessible place.
What a great theme this is for us at NPL this year, as
we’re currently renovating Horace C. Downing Branch,
under construction with the new Broad Creek Anchor
Branch and planning the new Southside Branch! We’re
literally living this year’s SRP program and hope you will
take advantage of these great programs as well as see these projects as they come
to life.
Online registration for SRP begins June 24 at norfolkpubliclibrary.org. The program
runs until August 5 and all ages are welcome to participate, from babies to adults.
Participation is easy – simply read books, attend free events, and earn prizes and
incentives along the way!
Research consistently shows the benefits of summer reading finding that students
actively engaged in a summer reading program scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the new school year versus those who did not
participate. In order to help prevent “summer slide,” or when students score lower
on standardized tests at the end of summer break than they did at the start of
summer, NPL offers a wide range of activities for all ages that are sure to keep kids
engaged in both reading and learning.
Parents, it’s equally important for you to read over the summer, too! You help set
the example, so we include an adult SRP with your own prizes and chances to get
involved in new activities. NPL has an extensive digital collection of eBooks,
eAudiobooks, TumbleBooks (eBooks for kids) and digital magazines that are free
and accessible 24/7 with your NPL library card!
