Emlenton Borough Completes Bike Trail Route Signage
Clarion Family
Dinner Planned
Emlenton’s own, Abby
Hindman, who is now a senior and Strategic Communications major at Clarion
University, is planning a
free family style picnic, the
Clarion Family Dinner.
This project is for her internship with the Communiversity, which is part of the
Center for Leadership and
Involvement at Clarion University. The main sponsor
for the event is the Clarion
University
Panhellenic
Council with Grow Clarion
and PA Preferred.
Abby says that over the
past few years these organizations have been working
with local agriculture leaders and businesses and
communities. The Clarion
Family Dinner is what resulted. She added, “The
event will not only show
how easy we have access
to healthy produce, but
how we can support the
community and business in
the area.

area and this project keeps
their vision moving forward. He says to stay tuned
for future developments.
He says his team at the Alliance is committed to improving the region.
Deb Lutz, also with the
Oil Region Alliance, commented on the achievement of the Allegheny
Clarion River Valley Blueprint core team, with one
of their goals for Emlenton
was to define and implement signage for the trail
and they have been able to
accomplish this in their first
year. And she looks forward
in working with all three
communities in the valley.
Speaking for the Council
of Greenway & Trails, Deb
Frawley said that the council is pleased that the
signage project is complete
and that they too are committed in seeing that the
trails moves forward in connecting two towns, and
hoping to build a partnership between the two
towns and encouraged
good communications.
Borough Manager, Nancy
Marano thanked everyone
for their hard work in putting the project together
and for its completion. She
was grateful for
the partnerships
and looks forward to working
together in upcoming projects.
Although the

Avenue
says,
“Trail Ends”, the
outlook is that it
is only temporary. The next
project for the
trail from Emlenton is to create a
2nd trail head at
2nd Street. The
vision is to provide parking, a
picnic area and a
boat dock, along
with a continued bike trail
heading toward
Foxburg. The
trail may end
there now, but
this is the vision
for its advancement.
Sue Smith, Kim Harris (with drill),
Barry Louise, and Rick Chandler, finish installing the last “Bike Route” sign
in the Emlenton Borough, at the bike
trail head for the Allegheny River Trail,
at the west end of Main St.

Congratulations and good luck to AC Valley senior golfer
Noah Morgan for advancing to the PIAA Regional Golf Tournament October 19th at Toms Run Country Club. To advance Noah had to place in the top 16 at the first round of the
District 9 competition and then be in the top 8 after the second round. Noah shot the load score in the second round of
competition to assure his place at the Regional. Moniteau’s
Britton Simmons and Weston Kimmey both made it through
the first round of competition.
Congratulations and good luck are also in order for Amber
Hess of Keystone. Amber captured her 4th straight District 9
girl’s golf championship and will advance to regional play.
AC Valley’s Ellie Thompson also had a fine district tournament finishing tied for 4th.
Big changes in the offing from the PIAA for high school
athletics. Beginning in 2016-2017 football will change from
4 classifications to 6. Football got most of the publicity but
baseball, basketball, softball volleyball, and soccer will also
change their classifications. All this work and they still dodged
the problem of public schools having to deal with private and
charter schools. Some things never change.
Another great year by the Pirates but unfortunately the
wildcard game was not kind to them. Looking ahead to next
year Neal Huntington is going to earn his money trying to
come up with a starting pitching staff. Cole and Liriano are a
good start but after that Locke and Morton? Happ probably
earned himself a multi-year multi-million dollar contract
somewhere outside of the Steel City. The Pirates have a couple
of minor leaguers that are close but we all know how the
Bucs operate with young pitchers. Here is a name to watch
for……Matt Latos. He was horrible this year for a couple of
teams but looks like a potential prospect for Ray Searage to
do a miracle with.
The Pirates have scored 2 runs in their last 32 innings of
playoff baseball.
If Sean Rodriguez would only play as good as he thinks he
fights the Bucs might still be playing.
The 3 best teams, record wise, in baseball were all in the NL
Central. Can you imagine if the Astros were still in the division?
The Steelers paid Josh Scobee $625,000 per game this year
or $625,000 per missed field goal.
Pitt held Virginia Tech to under 110 yards of offense. That
was the second time this year that the Panthers have played
that kind of defense. In the past 18 seasons Pitt managed to
do this to the opposition twice. Narduzzi can coach defense
and when he gets his kind of recruits look out.
For the first time in the past 6 years the NFL went an entire
month (September) without having a player arrested. Quite
an accomplishment.
This is how good Tiger Woods was. Since 1980 5 players
have won 5 or more golf tournaments in a season. Tiger did it
10 times during his prime.
Thought of the week: Don’t speak unless you can improve
the silence.
Dick’s Picks
PITT @ Georgia Tech: Last year the Rambling Wreck were
handed the game as the Panthers being good hosts served up
one turnover after another. We will see how good Pitt’s defense is against the run in this one. PITT 19 GT 17
Arizona @ STEELERS: If only Big Ben was healthy. Bruce
Arians might want a little revenge since the Steelers tried to
send him to an early retirement. Hard to believe the Steelers
can lose 2 in a row at home but fans may be calling for Charlie
Batch. Arizona 23 STEELERS 17

By: Jerry Costello for The Christophers
With deer hunting action just around the corner, and small
game hunting even closer, it’s probably a good time to take a
little look at hunting safety. We are, however, going to focus
on someting a bit different from that to which we are accustomed. Of course, firearms handling safety, along with making sure of your target and backstop are of vital importance.
There are, though, some other considerations, which are
sometimes overlooked, and they will be the focus of this
week’s column.
One of the dangers seldom thought of at this time of year is
poison ivy. Although usually thought of as a summer problem, the stalks and dead leaves still contain urushiol, the substance which causes the violent skin reaction in susceptible
individuals. Now, there’s an additional problem. The old adage “leaflets three, let it be,” is no longer very helpful. You
can’t readily see the plant. Just to be on the safe side, I always
shower with Fels Naphtha soap after hunting, unless I’m absolutely sure that the plant doesn’t exist in an area I’m hunting. So far, this has worked for me, and I’m really susceptible
to the poison and its harmful effects.
If, like me, you frequently hunt alone, any number of unpleasant things could happen, and they are compounded by
the fact that nobody is with you. You could very easily fall and
become incapacitated. Also, there is always the risk of a heart
attack or some other medical crisis. For that matter, you
could throw your back out and be unable to move. For these
reasons, it is vital that you make sure someone knows where
you’re hunting. I always tell my wife where I’m going, and, if
I decide to go to another spot, I either stop at home or call and
tell her. That way, if I don’t show up at home, she’ll know
where I am, and convey the information to emergency services.
Let’s elaborate a bit on some of the nasty falls hunters can
take. One of the worst occurs when you step lengthwise on a
wet log that is covered with leaves. Down you go, right on
your tailbone. Often, if you’re careful, you can spot the logs
ahead of time, but you’re almost certain to miss spotting one
from time to time. It’s also possible to hit your head on a rock
or log, causing serious injury, including prolonged unconsciousness. Broken bones can also occur and, if you’re a long
way from help, can be a serious matter. Once again, this
illustrates the necessity of making sure that someone knows
where you are hunting.
Still another potential problem is eye injury. When you’re
absorbed in what you are doing, it’s easy to get poked in the
eye with a branch. Here’s yet another case where a bit of
caution can go a long way toward preventing a problem, but
we all let our guard down once in awhile.
Getting lost is another hazard. Realistically, around here,
you can almost always find your way to civilization. In other
areas, especially those with which you are unfamiliar, getting
lost can lead to spending at least one night in the woods. If
you’re not prepared for it, this can be pretty bad. Take the
time to notice significant landmarks around you, and pay attention to where you are going. Also, it’s a good idea to learn
how to use a compass or GPS unit.
It’s also extremely important to know your physical limitations and to stay within them. If you are out of shape, and
seldom exercise, the rigors of just walking, climbing hills,
dragging out a big game animal, etc. can be too much for
you. If it’s been a while since you have been active, this should
send up a warning flag.
When you come right down to it, hunting is a really safe
sport. When you look at how many participate in it in Pennsylvania, compared to the number of injuries and illnesses
that result, this is clearly illustrated. Most of the time a bit of
common sense is all it takes to stay safe.

It was, more or less, a typical “Peanuts” comic strip. It featured Charlie Brown, of course, and it had a good punch line,
drawn with the quiet wit of Charles M. Schulz. In the opening
panel, Charlie is digging in the sand with a newfound friend
and asks, “Is your whole family here at the beach, Franklin?”
The friend answers no, his father is in Vietnam, and then, in
the manner of little boys getting acquainted, wants to know if
Charlie Brown likes to play baseball. Charlie replies that, if
anything, he likes it too much. And in the final panel Franklin
comes right out and asks, “Are you a good player?”, and
Charlie answers him, “I have some friends who would regard
that as a great topic for a panel discussion.”
A typical “Peanuts” strip, as I said, with one notable exception: Franklin is black. The date was July 31, 1968, and just
like that, “Peanuts” was integrated. Except that it didn’t happen “just like that.”
Writer Don Cavna tells the story well in The Washington
Post. It had begun, strangely enough, with the assassination
of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. several months earlier, in April of
1968. In Los Angeles, teacher Harriet Glickman, reaching out
for a sign of hope, no matter how small, wrote to several
comic-strip artists asking them to introduce black characters
in their drawings.
The replies she got were mostly non-committal, but Schulz
wrote back and wondered if he could do so without unintended condescension. Glickman promised to take up the
question with black friends, and subsequently replied to
Schulz with the encouraging results.
She was elated when Franklin was ushered into the script,
only weeks later, as a “regular kid.” And that’s how he joined
Linus, Lucy, and the rest of the crowd in the “Peanuts” gang—
a “regular” kid who happened to be black. Not, in those days,
that it was always that easy.
For one thing, Schulz faced hesitation from his own agency,
United Feature Syndicate, which asked him “Are you sure you
want to do this?” The artist simply said, “Either you run it the
way I drew it, or I quit.” The syndicate, fearful of losing the
wildly popular “Peanuts,” quickly backed down. It was more
or less the same with a group of editors, mostly from the
South, who feared the effects of Schulz’s plans for “Peanuts”
on the integration of schools in their communities. Take it or
leave it, Schulz replied in effect. Most of them, aware of his
favored status with readers, decided they’d take it. Before
long, Franklin became a fixture—and a favorite, at that.
The woman who’d started it all, Harriet Glickman, now 88,
explained in a telephone interview with reporter Cavna the
reason behind her move.
“I realized that black kids and white kids never saw themselves in the classroom,” she said, and so she wrote to several
syndicated strip cartoonists with her idea. Schulz, who replied promptly, turned out to be the one who most appreciated the point she had made. And before long, he went to
work.
Schulz died in 2000, but his work lives on. From time to
time, Glickman still sees Franklin and the other “Peanuts” kids
in cartoons reissued by the Los Angeles Times.
“I just love them,” she told Cavna. “Franklin was, and is, my
fourth child.”

Armstrong Recycling Center
Removes Cardboard Bins
from the Recycling Trailers
Cardboard is no longer being accepted in the recycling
trailers. This change was
made due to the fact that users are placing cardboard on
the ground. The cardboard on
the ground often has to be
thrown out in the trash because it is damaged by the
weather. Additionally, some
of the material gets blown
around causing pollution issues. Leaving materials on the
ground is considered littering
and can result in fines up to
$300.00. Cardboard is still
being accepted at the
Armstrong Recycling Center
located at 139 Armsdale
Road, Kittanning, PA 16201.
We will continue to accept the
following items in the trailers:
#1 & #2 plastic bottles and
jugs; Aluminum cans; Green,
clear & brown glass bottles
and jars; Newspapers; Magazines; Steel cans.
Recycling trailers can be
found in eleven locations
throughout the county. They
are located in the City of

Red Brick Gallery Exhibition
Foxburg, PA – Painter and
illustrator Chris DeNapoli
Michael is the featured artist
for Red Brick Gallery’s sixth
installment of its 2015 guest
artist exhibition series. The
exhibit will hang at the Red
Brick Gallery from Friday,
October 9 through Sunday,
November 15. A “meet the
artist” reception is set for Sunday, October 18, 4:00 p.m. to
6:00 p.m. at the Red Brick
Gallery.
Chris DeNapoli Michael’s
rich and expansive career as
an artist and designer has
spanned over 40 years and
includes forays into a broad
spectrum of media. Michael
explains that during her career she has explored woodworking, pottery, silver jewelry making, printmaking,
leather crafting, fabrics, quilting, graphic design, architecture, and photography.
However, she always returns
to her ûrst love – painting.
“ A view, a glance, a mist, a
moment – art. For me, it’s
the result of that deûning
moment of connection, trying to make concrete what
exists only in our subconscious,” Michael says. “It is the
process of that attempt that
has intrigued me my entire
life. An idea bursts into my
mind, often when I least expect it. Balance, color,
rhythm, style and media all
play into the intricate dance
of interpretation. The choices
are endless, the ultimate box
of chocolates.”
Chris earned a B.S. of Art
Education and was an art
teacher with DuBois Area
School District for 34 years.
During her tenure in rural
Pennsylvania, she had many
unique designing opportunities that included sports ûelds,
stage sets, yearbooks, t-shirts,
murals, layouts and ads,
gravestones, gardens and
house additions. She has also
conducted professional edu-

classes.
Family and extensive
travel
throughout the
U.S. and overseas
have provided a
wealth of ideas and
subject matter.
“Throughout my
career, I have immersed myself in
art history through
courses, lectures,
workshops, and
museums. I have
ventured
into
many materials,
such as wood, canvas, clay,
graphite, paint, fabric, ink,
ûlm, and digital. I have explored many artists, concepts, techniques, and styles,
attempting to share these experiences with children and
adults in my classroom and
studio.”
Currently Chris exhibits at
the Winkler Gallery of Fine
Art and Education in DuBois
and the Elk County Council on
the Arts gallery. Additionally,
she teaches private art lessons
and classes, volunteers as a
guide for Fallingwater and
participates in local fairs and
