2017 Lighthouse tours
A better way to
see lighthouses!
What can you expect from a USLHS Tour?
You will be in the company of lighthouse lovers,
history buffs, world travelers, and life-long learners
who enjoy the camaraderie of old friends and new.
Our members are known for being fun-loving and
inclusive! Single travelers are always welcome.
We are often able to explore, climb, and/or
photograph lighthouses, not open to the public,
usually found in remote locations. Your journey
to a lighthouse could involve charter boats, off
road vehicles, helicopters, float planes, or perhaps
horse drawn carriages! Travelers have even found
themselves on golf carts, jet boats, and lobster
trawlers just to get that perfect lighthouse
viewpoint!
Tour itineraries are designed to provide
opportunities to visit other regional landmarks and
attractions, and include free time to shop or relax.
You are taken care of! We include all transportation,
most meals, lodging, admissions, and a skilled tour
leader. Our tour packets feature custom journals,
tour patches and much more.
We enjoy sampling local cuisine—How about
lobster in Maine? Salmon in Seattle? Or bouillabaisse
in Marseilles? It all adds to understanding the unique
culture of an area. We understand that travelers
might have unique dietary restrictions and will do
our best to accommodate.
U.S. Lighthouse Society Tours support our
lighthouse preservation efforts, grants and
educational programing. Being that the Society is
a nonprofit organization; a portion of your fare is
tax-deductible.
A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
P
eople all over the world are naturally drawn to
lighthouses.Typically located in the most beautiful
locations on the planet, they reward those
of us who love to travel with stunning natural
landscapes and transcendent vistas. Historically,
lighthouses were built to save lives, giving them
a human connection unlike any other historic
landmark. They represent attributes all of us
strive for: compassion, courage, dedication, selflessness and humility...and
when you visit a lighthouse, you are destined to be moved in ways that
connect you with something larger than yourself.
U.S. Lighthouse Society tours are designed intentionally for those who
love traveling to amazing places and who desire to connect with others
who share a common passion for lighthouses and what they stand for.
Lighthouse Tours will touch you deeply as you experience living history
and extraordinary scenery, all the while connecting significantly with your
fellow travelers making friends for life.
I invite you to visit our website to learn more about our exciting itineraries

lighthouses & first flight
Ocracoke Lighthouse and Ferry
may 20-27, 2017
The Outer Banks is a 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina which
have been shaped by forces of nature, swept from the Atlantic Ocean. The large number of shipwrecks off
this coast has given this area the nickname, “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, and is the location of the infamous
account of the first colonists to settle the Americas, only to mysteriously disappear. The region is also home
to the first flight launched by the Wright brothers in 1903, forever changing the trajectory of the human race.
Their memorial will be one of the many stops on this exciting tour along with the Cape Hatteras National
Seashore, the first national seashore of its kind and home to the tallest lighthouse in America!
Today, after hundreds of years, the Outer Banks has a way of changing people and opening their eyes to new
experiences and passions in historic North Carolina. Take a step into the past and experience the history that
helped make this place a true original, complete with rolling sand dunes and a menagerie of wildlife . . . and oh
yes, amazing lighthouses!

Mostly made up of unspoiled forested lands, rural and sparsely populated,
the area also has buzzing, historic capitals, cultural traditions that have survived centuries of foreign oppression, and customs and cuisines shaped by
a peculiar mix of German and Russian influences. Estonia has nearly1,500
islands and islets, and its boulder-strewn coastline is hauntingly wild; Latvia’s natural assets include the white-sand, pine-fringed beaches of the “Baltic Riviera.”

The source of the Hudson River is the poeticsounding “Lake Tear of the Clouds,” in the
Adirondacks. Running for 315 miles, it empties into
Lower New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. But
it’s what has transpired between the source and
where it empties that makes the Hudson River so
fascinating. The region is one of America’s treasures.
Long before English explorer Henry Hudson sailed
up the river in 1609 for the Dutch East India
Company, the waterway was a major travel route
for Native Americans.
The Hudson River is best known today as the
political dividing line between New York and New
Jersey, but its history sheds light on America’s
rich past of exploration and revolution, and is
one of the most predominant waterways on the
East Coast. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825
and commercial river traffic increased, the U.S.
Lighthouse Establishment felt the need for a more
sophisticated system of lights. In 1826, the Stony
Point Lighthouse was the first to shine its light on
the Hudson, starting a system of lights that safely
guided mariners the length of the river.
From “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great
Gray Bridge” and fabulous New York City at the
southernmost point to Burlington, Vermont, with
its perfect blend of old New England charm on
the shores of Lake Champlain, your tour along the
Hudson River is sure to be a memorable one as
you visit lighthouses that have guided sailors for
centuries.

Inchkeith Island Lighthouse
Lighthouses, Kilts, & Castles
july 10-26, 2017
England encompasses half of the island of Great Britain, roughly 1/3 of its coastline. No English
city is more than 70 miles from the coast, so the culture has developed a strong connection to
the sea. It is this maritime tradition that has impacted England’s history, literature, culture, eating
habits and economy.
The east coast of England, bordering the North Sea, is unique in that resorts are relatively rare,
and therefore it is a coast that offers long stretches of pristine beaches. It is not only popular
for its lighthouses, but is known to bird watchers worldwide. This part of England, like the
Netherlands on the other side of the North Sea, is very flat, making it a unique place to visit in
the region.
Beginning in the capital of Edinburgh, our tour encompasses many lighthouses the U.S. Lighthouse
Society is visiting for the first time! Boat trips to the Firth of Forth as well as a visit to the Royal
Yacht Britannica are on the schedule prior to heading south along the Scottish coast to Barnes
Ness and St. Abbs Head. Entering England, our tour is packed with iconic lighthouses, castles and
priories, historic islands and small coastal towns.
Some of the more famous lights include Longstone, Coquet, St. Mary’s, Souter, Flamborough
Head, and Spurn Point. The Coquet, Blyth,Tyne,Wear, and Humber Rivers all flow into the North
Sea and are home to a large number of very interesting and unusual breakwater and pier lights.
Every effort has been made to make the 16 day trip easier with multiple nights in most hotels
and a free day in Newcastle. If all that isn’t enough, when we leave the coast and head for another
capital city, London, we will pause for some additional attractions including Oxford University,
Windsor Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon.
So, dust off your kilt, bone up on your English history, and remember what Shakespeare said: To
sign up or not to sign up - that is the question. If you do, you will not be disappointed.

People have their escapes. Many say Hawaii or the Caribbean is for them. But for New Englanders, nothing is closer
to the heart or the home, than their Cape Cod. A little slice of peace and tranquility in the otherwise busy and
bustling Northeast, Cape Cod has long sat as a peaceful harbor where visitors can come to eat oysters, go sailing,
and visit classic lighthouses of course, among other things.
Cape Cod is a hooked shaped stretch of land extending from the southeastern corner of mainland Massachusetts
into the Atlantic Ocean. Our tour to the Cape, plus the neighboring islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket,
offers an in depth look at the rich native, whaling, and maritime history of this special region.
Sitting just south of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard has drawn vacationers for decades with its laid-back elegance and
idyllic summer weather. The island, the largest off Massachusetts’ coast, is only accessible by boat or air and offers
all the picturesque charms of a New England whaling town with eye-catching architecture.
At the height of its prosperity in the early 19th century, the little island of Nantucket was the foremost whaling port
in the world; its harbor bustled with whaling ships and merchant vessels. Burly ship hands loaded barrels of whale
oil onto wagons, which they wheeled along cobblestone streets to refineries and candle factories. Ship owners and
sea captains built elegant mansions, which today remain remarkably unchanged, thanks to a very strict building code
initiated in the 1950s. The entire town of Nantucket is now an official National Historic District encompassing
more than 800 pre-1850 structures within one square mile. Interestingly enough, in 1659, Native Americans sold
the island to a group of nine Massachusetts Englishmen for 30 pounds and two beaver hats.
Join us as we explore the famed lighthouses of Buzzard’s Bay, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod and Plymouth
on this extraordinary journey through some of the country’s most scenic and historic settings.

People don’t travel to this region of the U.S. to work on their tans. You
won’t see many bikinis at Cape Blanco or folks sitting idly with a book
next to the Devil’s Punchbowl. Locals don’t even call it “the beach”
normally. But as soon as you hear the surf crashing into the cliffs, you
stop paying attention to anything else. This amazing place on the west
coast consists of 363 miles of coastline where the Pacific Ocean washes
up on the state’s western beaches, and is completely unique.
Throughout history, Oregon has been a beacon for explorers and settlers,
starting with the famed Lewis and Clark. So it is only fitting that this duo
and their eternal quest for discovery act as inspiration for our iconic
lighthouse tour. These unique lighthouses and their special Fresnel lenses
are nestled among the most breathtaking backdrops of coves and cliffs in
the world, and provide an awe-inspiring experience for any traveler.

San Francisco:
Beacons by the bay
Point Bonita Lighthouse
september 7-12, 2017
San Francisco Bay, one of the great natural harbors of the world, lay unexplored
for over two centuries from the time of the first documented navigation along the
California coast. Ironically, the bay was discovered by a land expedition and only by
accident!
Set along the Pacific Ocean, with rolling hills and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge,
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States and the jewel
of Northern California. The city is full of history with some notable attractions
beyond the famous bridge, including historic Alcatraz Island and Fisherman’s Wharf,
which will be seen on this excellent tour.
Early on, fishermen and sailors learned of the Bay Area’s pea-soup fog, shifting
shoals and abundance of perilous rocks. The influx of ships during the Gold
Rush encouraged Congress to pass legislation that lead to the building of several
lighthouses along the west coast, including the light on Alcatraz Island which was
the first in Northern California.
Come with us as we journey along California’s coast, from the quintessential San
Francisco Bay south to “El Sur Grande” or Big Sur, and explore the historic beacons
that are monuments to our nation’s maritime heritage.

SouthERN lake michigan:
signals & SHorelines
September 17-24, 2017
South Lake Michigan is considered America’s freshwater
Riviera, a nearly unending strand of sand that looks like
Florida without the high-rise condos. It’s clean, blue and
pleasantly cool, with water temperatures in the 60s, and
in most places it looks just like the ocean. Add in historic
lighthouses and even more ice-cream stands, and you’ve
got the makings of a great tour.
The lighthouses and water intake cribs of Indiana and
Chicago Harbor have long eluded lighthouse lovers due
to their offshore inaccessibility. Our tour provides a
unique combination of a cruise and coach trip to view
these lights along with a number of other tower, pier,
and breakwater navigational aids between Milwaukee
and Muskegon. Add extra nights for sightseeing and deep
dish pizza in Chicago, and you have the elements of an
unforgettable lighthouse tour.
Join us for an exploration of Lake Michigan’s beautiful
shorelines and well-preserved lighthouses offering a
glimpse into the rich maritime history of this great lake.

From the iconic lighthouses perched along sparkling bays to Portland’s cobblestone streets, Maine
offers unique experiences for everyone.
Fall foliage in New England is spectacular. People come from all over the world to see the leaves change,
and Maine has arguably the best foliage with bright orange, yellow and red leaves on maples, oak, elm
and birch, in dramatic contrast against the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
With 65 historic lighthouses still standing along 5,000 miles of coastline, inlets and islands, Maine
is commonly referred to as “The Lighthouse State”. These lighthouses have acted as beacons for
hundreds of years, guiding sailors safely along the rocky Maine coastline.
It is this wonderful state’s stunning and dynamic landscape, combined with its maritime past that inspires
us to travel here. Lighthouses, awe-inspiring fall colors and lobster...what could be better?
Our itinerary focuses on the southern portion of the state including Portsmouth, New Hampshire,
north to the Penobscot Bay. Thirty-one iconic lighthouses will be seen including a special climb of
Maine’s oldest, Portland Head. In addition, numerous cruises allow up close encounters with many of
the offshore lights and are sure to produce excellent photographs.
Good times, great food and fellow lighthouse aficionados await you this coming October!

What’s included
Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa is hard to beat. It
befits its position at the southern end of the world’s most epic continent with more
types of terrain than photographers can shake their zoom lens at . . . and yes, there are
lighthouses there!
These lights are essential to coastal navigation between Cape Town and Durban, where
safe harbors are few and far between. The warm Agulhas Current sweeps southwards
out of the Indian Ocean and collides directly with the very cold Antarctic Current,
creating steep and dangerous seas.We start our journey with four nights in Cape Town,
a delightful city with a Mediterranean-type climate.
We will travel along the Western Cape, before heading east to South Africa’s beautiful
wine country and then along the garden route to Port Elizabeth. Beyond Port Elizabeth
we spend a night in the Addo Elephant National Park. All major African animal groups
live wild and free in this area and trackers will join us for two game safaris.
From Addo we go to Great Fish River and Hood Point Lighthouses near East London.
Next we fly north to Durban where we visit six more lighthouses and end our lighthouse
safari at Tugela Lighthouse, before visiting Shakaland to observe Zulu culture.
This tour offers an optional post-tour to Kampama River Lodge where we will
experience the natural beauty of the African wilderness. Travelers will partake in daily
excursions to look for animals as well as enjoy swimming and relaxation at the lodge.
