ANOTHER WORLD: Felicia had
This week, as is often the case, I had a tough time deciding
what subject to write about in this column.
And, most of the time when this happens, I end up writing
about something that's amazingly stupid and nonsensical.
However, this week, J think I'll get a little more serious and
philosophical instead (But not quite as much as your average J#aJt
***"* 3t Journal article).
You see, last night (Note: I'm writing this on Saturday morning,
so you can probably guess which night I'm referring to here), I saw
Vinny Purpura (of Vinny's Pizzeria fame) and his son Mike over at
the Lowville Boys' Soccer Tournament. And we got talking about,
among other things, how it's easier to see a play unfold from the
sidelines than it is on the field.
I think my exact words (or a reasonable facsimile of them)
were "It's a lot easierto see all the mistakes the kids make from
over here than it was on the fieW." (Not that I was on the field a
whole lot during my not-so-Hlustrious soccer career. But, I played
i«no*ioj*torememberwhat it was like, anyway.)
j Hws* kind of tunny how many times last night that I saw
scoring chances wasted because of poor decisions^ miskicks
From both ourtocalguys and the out-of-county-ers.
And, every time one of our local booters would make a nice
move, burning a defender or two, then make an errant pass that
would totally mess up that scoring opportunity, I involuntarily
cringed (I'd hate to think what the coaches were going through then.
I guess that's why there are so many antacids on the market).
But then, after thinking about it for awhile, I recalled that
professional (both American and international) soccer players mess
up their scoring chances most of the time, too (That's why the
scores are so low). And, although I didnt touch the ball too much
during my playing days, 1 even recalled a couple of instances in
which I totally messed up scoring opportunities,
So, after saying ail of that, I guess my point is that, when you
as a fan, parent, coach, player, or casual observer see a play break
down because of a mistake, don't be too hard on the players.
After all, it's not as easy as it looks.
***
Oh, you probably want to know what I thought about the
tournament.
Well, since the consolation and final games havenl been
played yet (And I dont want to wait until they're done to finish this
column), I cant give you my final thoughts on the matter.
But, I must say that I'm pretty excited about having two local
teams in the finals again (Since South Lewis beat Copenhagen, 50, and Lowville beat Whitesboro, 2-1). That hasnl happened in
awhile, if I remember correctly.
In a way, both of the winning teams surprised me.
Rrei off, Ifiguredthat the first game would be a fairly close
one. So, when I showed up with about 10 minutes left in the game
and saw that South Lewis was ahead 3-0 (And 4-0 a few seconds
later), I just about flipped.
Then, m the nightcap, I figured that Lowville would have a
reaBy tough time against the vaunted Whitesboro team, the squad
that won thistournamentlast year. But, from what I saw, the
Raiders did a good job of controlling the baU-and the fleld-against
the Warriors. And, since I waant very far from Josh Duthie when he
scored rite first half goal, I had a good view of It..
What a shot! From the left side of the field about 15 yards out
Josh lofted the baH over a fallen Whitesboro defender (I think the
baH :1actually skimmed his back) and into the upper left-hand
- 1||tpffofrgoal.The goalie had no chance. It was sweet.
