Anytime I see the abbreviation, DS, I tend to take note of it. So when a friend shared a story with me recently about someone for whom those letters share importance, I must admit, I payed attention "I have Down Syndrome.... (DS as medical journals sometimes abbreviate) We are special, and we are a gift to the world." These are the words of Tim Harris, who lives in Alburquerque, NM. He is the heart, soul, and spirit who makes Tim's Place a destination restaurant. As one person describes him. "Tim Harris has no time for limitations. The Albuquerque restaurant owner and multiple Special Olympic medalist has far too many hugs to give." Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2r4Y3rvnwo I have to agree with Tim. Persons with Down Syndrome are special....and a gift to the world. This came into full focus for me in the summer of 1986. Fresh out of seminary, I was appointed as the new associate pastor at HBUMC. For a number of years Hayes Barton has sponsored The "Starnes Special Ministries Class". I had the privilege of being a frequent participant in this class for almost two and one-half years. There, my friend Gerald taught me the intricacies of "Uncle Wiggly" as we played it together on Sunday mornings. Recently there was a Sunday morning reunion with my old friend, Gerald. He came into my filed of vision, calling my name before I could call his. Gerald gave me his signature hug, and flashed his infectious smile. I'm not sure I have ever been welcomed to any of our churches more warmly. If you look on the church website the class is described as follows: This class offers a ministry for older youth and adults with developmental disabilities by providing a meaningful Christian experience through lessons and group discussion. I imagine that there are families in every corner of our district who wish that experiences like these would become available for their, "special gifts to the world." I wonder if there are any other congregations in the Capital District who welcome friends like Tim and Gerald? I wonder how many are interested in getting started? Will you let me know???? Still In ONE Peace, jon (the Methodist )
