Hulk vs. Nehemiah All of us have been equipped with an “Anger Meter” that shows how angry we are. Some people’s anger meters need some extra space; while some others’ are fairly extended. My anger meter gets perilously close to the “red zone” at Walmart check-out lines. Somehow I’ve been gifted with the talent of choosing the Slowest. Line. Possible. But unfortunately that’s not the worst place for my meter. One evening, while Krista was having a late night pregnancy craving , and while I was needing to find some medicine for my cold, I took a trip to our closest convenience store in Mesquite at the time: CVS. After what was already a frustrating interaction with the pharmacist, I took my purchases to the check-out counter...which was void of cashiers. One girl behind the photo counter looked up from stapling something, examined the unmanned registers, and put her eyes back on her stapling. I strolled around the store looking for somebody to pay. After finding no one, I could only assume this was “no need to pay for your stuff” day. I knew better so I decided to wait again. The girl annoyingly looked up at me again as if to say “Are you really still here?” and picked up the intercom: “Customer Service to the Front.” While waiting for so-called “customer service,” an old man comes up behind me, looks at the counter next to me, and puts his purchases on it. The checker arrives and begins helping the man. Anger meter at three-quarters: “Oh, I guess you’re first then.” Pa Kettle looks up surprised: “Oh...were you first?” “No...I’m just comparing the size of these magazine racks...number 3 looks tallest to me…” I’m finally helped by a lady who found her true calling at this store, after emptying her purse to find her glasses. After an inquisitive text from tired, hungry wife, trouble with every scanned item, and not one but two ID checks later (I thanked her after the second one because “I could be someone else this time”) I finally get to leave. Media gives us one answer to how we should respond to anger. The Incredible Hulk! I wished I was Dr. Bruce Banner and could transform into an enormous green monster and reduce that CVS to dust. Though the Bible gives us a different character who becomes angry. His name is Nehemiah. He is the one granted the honor of rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem. If you’ll take a couple nights before bed to read this story, you’ll see how many times Nehemiah gets angry. He is met countless times with bullies like Sanballat and Tobiah, who spread lies about him in Jerusalem. Each time Nehemiah faced those challenges, what was the first thing he would do? Would he begin recruiting people to be on his side? Would he bully back? He confronted his anger with prayer. Nehemiah never acted first. He always prayed to God for wisdom. Next week, I’ll be preaching on more ways to confront emotional challenges with Biblical wisdom in this Back-toSchool season. Hope to see you here. A Nichols’ Worth… By Philip Nichols TONIGHT MOVIE FOR BOTH ADULTS AND TEENS—This Wednesday PART 2 “The Time To Live is Now—The Legacy of Lygon Stevens” “This is one of the most inspirational films I have seen in a long time!” This is a breathtaking docudrama that shows the experiences of the Stevens family, who lost their daughter and sister, Lygon, to an avalanche in southern Colorado in 2008. Lygon’s journal was found after she died and this is the story of her intimate relationship with God as told and portrayed by her own family. One excerpt from her journal, “The Lord asked me to dance with him today. And I said Yes! I dressed up in the best I could… He told me I was beautiful.” Lygon’s dad said he never knew what real intimacy with God was until he read his daughter’s journal. If you saw part 1, you for sure will be back if you didn’t you will still be blessed with the second half. A Financial course begins Wednesday nights, on August 27. More details to come as to the fee. Learn how to take control of money God’s way and not let the love of money control you. Scott Jarvis will also begin a class on August 27, on a New Testament Survey. This will take a look at how the books of the new testament relate to each other and the big picture God wants us to see in this testament.
