This year Panama Class attended the
Country Dancing Festival at
Havenstreet. They danced alongside
approximately 20 other Island
primary schools. It was an amazing
sight to see so many children
enjoying dancing together. Our team
danced various dances including the
Maypole, Pat- a-cake Polka and Oxo
Reel, which they had been practising
every week.
Although the children loved dancing together, I think the highlight was having family
and friends share this experience with them!
Flower Garden
The world’s most prestigious flower
show, Chelsea Flower Show, has
nothing on our new flower garden
here at Nettlestone. I am very
proud to announce that Zack, in
Year 6, has finally completed his
challenge of planning, preparing and
planting the flower garden. I know
that he also had assistance from
Logan, in Year 6. Both boys
presented me with a very clear
costing list, chose particular plants
(Bedding plants, Pansies, Osteospermum, etc.) that would last the summer and gave
me a timeline for its completion. A big ‘thank you’ goes out to t/both of them for
successfully achieving this challenge—let’s make sure we remember to water them
now boys!
This weeks fixtures:

Peru Class—Peru class have had a brilliant week learning about the creatures that live beneath the sea and how
they move. They have been reading stories about the sea, in particular 'The Fish Who Could Wish' which inspired
them to decorate their own fish before thinking about the wishes that their fish could make. In Maths they have
been learning to recognise and order the numbers 10-20 and think about one more and one less. They have also
been learning to estimate the amount of objects as well as guessing what would be heavier or lighter, before
checking with the scales. There has been lots of role play and den building with the boxes from our new furniture.
Yesterday we had a Police Station and a bus stop designed by some of the children.
Spain Class—This week the Year 1s took their phonic screening tests. The children worked hard and should be very
proud of themselves. Well done to all! Results will be published for parents alongside end of term reports.
As part of our 'Commotion in the Ocean' topic the children have been finding out about sharks and making models/
pictures out of different materials. We have also read the 'Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' by Ronda Armitage and will
continue to explore this story in English lessons next week.
Panama Class—Wow! What a wonderful week!
This week we have made thumbs pots from clay and joined two pots together to create a trinket holder. We have
been learning about China and the Eden Project. We have been learning about addition and subtraction in Maths and
researching Anthony Browne to create an Author Profile.
We spent the day at Havenstreet Railway on Wednesday at the Country Dancing Festival. The children performed
brilliantly and remembered all their moves. Their behaviour was impeccable.
Well done Year 2.
Canary Islands Class—Year 3 always seem to amaze. This week, the children have been working on some complex
division. They have been using multiple methods to divide two/three digit numbers by one digit numbers. In literacy,
we have focused on our class book, Queen of the Falls, and have planned and wrote letters to Annie's manager,
Frank Russell. In science, we looked at seed dispersal and pollination. It has been an interesting area. Finally, in
topic, we have used our ICT and geography skills to use compass directions and locate areas relating to Queen of
the Falls.
Valenzuela Class — Another busy week for Year 4. In Literacy we are continuing to read our class text; Swallows
and Amazons. We read chapter 3 and then made a quiz about it to see how much we understood. In Numeracy we
have been learning how to convert different units of measures. This week we have focused on units of length. We
found this quite tricky. In Topic, we learnt about counties and labelled a map of the UK with all it's counties. Well
done year 4, keep up the hard work.
Cuba Class— Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying the new Shakespeare topic. We have started with 'Midsummer Night's
Dream' and we have already had lots of drama with; frieze frames, reading soliloquy's and acting out scenes. The
children have even started to create their own play scripts. In Maths the children have been working on finding
missing lengths and angles of triangles and rectangles. They have also been working on learning the songs for the
end of year production of 'Shakespeare Rocks'.
Mexico Class—This week in Mexico class, we've been enjoying investigating fair tests. We started by investigating
whether boys or girls could throw the furthest -which ended up as a rather fun competition on the playground with
beanbags. We also explored the impact of music on pulse rate. The majority of us discovered that listening to calm
music lowered our pulse rate but that listening to pop music raised our pulse rate. We had to be careful to play
both types of music at the same volume and for the same amount of time -so that our test really would be fair.
