Giving From The Heart
This month I want to give you a peek into the life of
Shelly. Why? Because she is an example of a woman
who has answered the call to reach out to women in
prison with what she can give.
“I met my husband Dan when he was working as a
youth pastor making fifty bucks a week and living in
a church basement. He wrote wonderful poetry and
had a yummy Yamaha 650. We crashed it on our second date, and I knew I was in love. For the past thirty
years, Dan and I have worked together in churches and
Christian schools. I eventually earned an M.R.E. from
Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (1990) and, to my
knowledge, was the only woman in that era that commuted to classes on her
motorcycle.”
Today Shelly is a successful writer and a teacher. Like all of us, she has had
many experiences in life, some good some bad. Although Shelly was never
addicted to drugs, an alcoholic, a thief or suffered abuse as so many women
in prison have, her own trauma of being brutally attacked by a serial rapist
brought her to her knees. She understands what it means to be healed of your
scars, forgive what you never thought you could and truly love the unlovable.
So there she is walking through life feeling pretty good about her career, family, friends and God. Then she hears about Daughters of Destiny and God
pricks her heart. “What about these Daughters of mine? You have sat at my
feet, learned, been healed and have so much to give, would you share with my
forgotten ones, for my glory?”
“Yes”, she answered, and then she contacted us and began making it work.
Shelly joined our Speakers Bureau and pays her own expenses to attend Daughters of Destiny events in women’s prisons across the nation. She has a wonderful book titled “The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk,” which relates to exposing
the lies we process through our minds causing us to make bad choices as we go
through life. She speaks to the women using her real-life examples and gives
tools to assist them in the spiritual disciplines of self-assessment, repentance,
commitment, and transformation. Then, as they leave, she hugs each woman
and hands her a free copy of her book. ” My desire is to impact lives with truth
and to encourage people to be all God created them to be in Jesus Christ.”
God has used Shelly’s experiences to make her into the woman she is today.
Where she is at, what she has come through is gold to these women who need
guidance and hope for their own broken lives. You may not feel you have much
to give a broken woman in prison, but you do. We have all been through struggles and learned to overcome with the Lord by our side. Whether your experiences are written in a book or just on your heart it is the gospel these women
use to receive hope for their own lives.
Please contact us @ www.daughtersofdestiny.org to see how you may join
women from all walks of life and all across the nation as a Daughters of Destiny volunteer.

Karen
She lost custody of her two children,
experienced the loss of two husbands, one by a
heroin overdose, and was a sold out crack addict
by her early twenties. Arrested in 2006, she
found out about God and completed an amazing Christian recovery program with a woman
mentor. But when Karen got released from
prison she tried to make it all work on her own
and she slowly slipped back to depending on
drugs. When God tugged at her heart to call her
mentor, she was welcomed back with open arms.
Two years later Karen is still living a healthy
Christ-filled life, working in the very place she
was healed. “Now it’s my turn to be there for broken women. So when I meet
my Lord in heaven He will say, “Well done, Daughter. Welcome home.’ ”
Sarah
No matter how hard Sarah tried, she
couldn’t stop using. “I was so lost and broken. When
I finally got busted and charged with 19 felonies, all
79 lbs of me, I was a skeleton in handcuffs with no
hope. That was January 29th, 2007- I was relieved.
And even though I felt like useless trash that society
wanted to throw away, God saw something different. He met me there, and saved me.” Sarah learned
for the first time in her life who God was and
what He intended her to be; His Daughter and
loved beyond all measure. Today, Sarah speaks
to women and shares her story as a Daughter of
Destiny, saved and transformed by the King of Kings!
Women of faith join hands
to reach broken sister inside!
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon
me, because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good tidings to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives, and the opening of the prison
to those who are bound; to proclaim the
year of the Lord’s favor, and the day
of vengeance of our God; to comfort
all who mourn; to grant to those who
mourn in Zion -- to give them beauty
instead of ashes, the oil of gladness
instead of mourning, the mantle of
praise instead of a faint spirit; that
they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that
He may be glorified.
- Isaiah 61
