Iron Age vestiges found
in northwestern Iran
Cultural remains of the Iron Age era as well as a number of
burials in a cemetery from the early Islamic era were discovered in Tappeh Silveh 2 in West Azarbaijan Province.
According to the Research Institute of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, the head of the
excavation team Kiumars Haji-Mohammadi said the graves in
the cemetery were identified in three layers representing the
sequence of burials in the mound in different Islamic centuries.

He pointed to the identification of the remains of cultural
objects from the historical and Iron Age in the cuttings created
by unauthorized excavators, saying that a trench was made for
detailed study of the layer on the southern slope of the hill.
The archeologist noted that the density of the cemetery in
the Islamic era at the surface of the mound has slowed down
the trend of the excavation and therefore studies are being
conducted on the remains of other cultural eras.
Based on inference about Tappeh Silveh 2 (Sarbaz), these
settlements belong to the pre-historic era (Copper and Stone,
Bronze and Iron Age eras), he pointed out.
Rare parchment of US declaration
discovered in England
US historians found a rare parchment of the US Declaration of
Independence hidden away in a small records office in Sussex,
England.
Harvard researchers discovered the ‘Sussex Declaration’,
believed to be only the second such parchment known in existence, in the Chichester archives of the small town of West
Sussex, England. The other parchment is housed in the National Archives in Washington DC, RT reported.
Researchers Emily Sneff and Danielle Allen announced
their discovery at a Yale conference. They published their initial research online.

will the Iranian festival have anything to say in international
arena during the next year?

The newly discovered parchment of America’s formative text is believed to date back to the 1780s, which they say
sheds light on the tumultuous years the US experienced after
the Revolutionary War.
The parchment is believed to have belonged to the Duke of
Richmond, known as the ‘Radical Duke’ due to his support for
American colonists against the monarchy and British parliament during the war.
Working as part of Harvard’s ‘Declaration Resources Project’, which is seeking to create a database containing every
known iteration of the declaration, Sneff and Allen first stumbled upon a listing for the parchment in 2015, but thought little of it at the time.
“I’d found vague descriptions of other copies of the Declaration that turned out to be 19th century reproductions
of the signed parchment in the National Archives, so that
was what I was expecting,” said Sneff. “What struck me as
significant was that it said manuscript on parchment,” she
said.
Sneff then contacted the West Sussex records office, which
mailed her images of the historic document.
“When I looked at it closely, I started to see details, like
names that weren’t in the right order — John Hancock isn’t
listed first, there’s a mark at the top that looks like an erasure,
the text has very little punctuation in it — and it’s in a handwriting I hadn’t seen before,” she said.
“As those details started adding up, I brought it to my research partner’s attention and we realized this was different
from any other copy we had seen.”
Upon studying the document, the two concluded that it was
likely produced in the 1780s, some years after the original
1776 declaration.
he 35th Fajr International Film Festival (FIff) kicked off
on April 21 and will run through April 28 in the competition and non-competitive sections. The festival is hosting
350 foreign and Iranian guests.
The participation of 31 Asian, 23 European, six African and
five American and Australian countries provided a special outlook to the event and at the same time increased the quality
and quantity of films submitted to the festival’s secretariat.
It is noteworthy that it is the third year that the international
section of the festival is being held separately from its national
counterpart as it seeks to gain an independent identity.
Iran Daily interviewed a young Iranian actress Negar Javaherian to learn more about the festival’s international section
as it tries to earn international fame.

such a global reputation?

IRAN DAILY: This year it is the third year that that the
festival’s domestic and international section are being held
separately. How do you evaluate the trend?
NEGAR JAVAHERIAN: Holding the international section
of the festival as a separate part has been successful. If a cinematic festival will be held in a country and its cineastes take
part in the event, it indicates that the festival is so valid.

This is trend will take time. I believe that those who are
doing their best to hold the event including the festival’s Secretary Reza Mirkarimi and his team argue that the festival is
capable of competing with world prestigious festivals. It is
crystal clear that Fajr festival will find its own place among international festivals. We are living in a country whose cinema
is world-renowned and has been made popular through great
filmmakers such as Abbas Kiarostami.

In fact, Kiarostami presented a new style of narration to the
world and that is why his style attracts more attention in the
world.
What are the reasons for Iran’s cinematic achievements in
recent years?
Iran’s cinematic successes are not limited to recent years.
The style which was established by Kiarostami goes back to
several years before. Of course, Iran’s recent successes including Asghar Farhadi’s great accomplishment in Academy
Awards prompted international interest in Iranian cinema.

Sheikh Bahaei to be
commemorated

Several organizations across Iran will commemorate the birth anniversary of Sheikh Bahaei, a Muslim philosopher, architect, mathematician, astronomer and a poet on April 23
which is observed as National Architect Day.
Baha’ddin Mohammad ibn Hossein Ameli,
known as Sheikh Bahaei, was born in Baalbek,
Lebanon in the 16th-century and then migrated in his childhood to Iran during the Safavid
era. Considered one of the main co-founders of
Isfahan School of Islamic philosophy, Sheikh
Bahaei became one of the teachers of famous
Iranian philosopher Molla Sadra.
There are over 100 treatises and books in
different topics attributed to the scholar. He
probably wrote 17 books on astronomy and
related subjects. They include ‘Treatise on
the Problems of the Moon and Mercury’ and
‘Anatomy of the Celestial Spheres’.
Also a versatile writer, his outstanding poetic works in Persian include ‘Jame’ Abbasi’
and two rhymed couplets named ‘Milk and
Sugar’ and ‘Bread and Sweets’.
Sheikh Baha’ al-Din’s fame was due to his
excellent command of mathematics, architecture and geometry. Historical Naqsh-e Jahan
Square and Charbagh Avenue in Isfahan and
the Manar Jonban, also known as the two
shaking minarets, in the west of Isfahan, are
said to have been designed by Sheikh Bahaei.
Sheikh Bahaei’s design and construction of
a public bath in Isfahan, still known as Sheikh
Bahaei’s Bath, was amazing. All the water
was heated by a single candle.
