The first recorded European American journey to this area was made by William Clark, one of the leaders of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, in January, 1805, when a group of Native Americans invited him to view a beached whale at the nearby beach. The expedition was headquartered at the time near the mouth of the Columbia River. The cannon slowly drifted with the waves and currents to the shores of Arch Cape. In 1898, one of the early settlers in the area, John Gerritse, a sailor whose relatives built ships in Holland, hauled the cannon out of the ocean with his team of horses and the help of a friend, James Austin. It was set in cement as a landmark on the Rudolph Kisslinhg place, where it remained until it was moved across the highway to provide a better focus for visitors. In 1953, two cannons, made to resemble the original, were placed at each entrance of the community. On December 9, 1955, Cannon Beach was incorporated as a city. licensing information Marriage Licenses You may request an application by mail or phone to: Clatsop County Clerk’s Office 820 Exchange St. Suite 220 Astoria, OR 97103 503.325.8511 Driver’s License Motor Vehicle Department 705 W.
